Taking a brief break from setting up the stüd (the studio lol) and using my sketchbook for the first time in MONTHS! I chat about this new gouache class I'm taking, an art exhibition I was invited to show in, and my own little aurora chasing adventure.
Let me know what you think about this more casual kind of video!! :)

Regarding your thoughts on art school being more focused on feelings and less on teaching you actual skills: I think it depends on what school you go to. Which is why for art school it’s reeeeeally important to do your research into the courses offered and the professors, and if you can, see what their students are also creating. The work the professors/students make is strongly indicative of the kind of instruction you will receive. I received a very traditional realism focused art education, with a strong emphasis on portraiture, because my main two instructors were traditional realists who were professional figure/portrait artists. Which is what I was after. My point is just that art school experiences vary from school to school, the hard part is finding the right school for you.
Which school u went to?
I really liked seeing you paint and hearing your thought process through it. I hope you keeping doing those, I find it really helpful both as an artist and well as an instructor. I look forward and honored to walking the journey with you. I can't see what you do next! 😃
Loved listening to your insights throughout this, it feels like I'm experiencing it all with you!
Hell yeah cheers to your gouache adventure! Can’t wait to see sketches for those big panels. Thanks for sharing my spicy 🌶️ thread! So glad it resonated. Also, happy to help ya move furniture anytime. 😊
Where you say " I want to live my life more" I totally get that.
that is one gorgeous box! what a lovely surprise 🥰
50 yrs ago when I was at art school, gouache was simply understood to be used in design and colour works, and mainly commercially. Few people really get what gouache is for these days. But remember, gouache is mat and is not for glazing, oil painting, traditional, uses a lot of glazing. So learning gouache is great, but start working on oil paper too with oils for values etc.
I was missing your presence here and waiting for you to put out a new video Kelsey. I enjoy the companionship you know? Herring you talk about your craft and what you find challenging or brings you pleasure in your work. I love your work and am excited for your mentorship in gouache.
I cant even finish watching the video but I just entered an illustration vocational school in Japan! I already graduated from an art college in the states like 6 years ago…life isn’t linear…But in just like 1 month I’ve finally learned how to use the pen tool in illustrator just by outlining Luffy and we are spending hours doing a grisaille painting of an apple on photoshop and it’s the best digital painting I’ve made in my life. I agree that art school is too much “your voice” and not enough “how to fucking use the goddamn pen tool”
Assistant director 'Spooky' 🥰
I had to leave some art books back in canada when i moved here, managed to replace some of them but have gotten others instead to fill the bookshelves 😀
14:16 that is a gorgeous view!!
Those Strathmore sketchbooks are my FAVORITE. I stocked up a few years ago and always look forward to starting a fresh one
You look so happy in this video! It's contagious!
Congrats on your mentorship! 🎉 I’m looking forward to where it’s taking you and what exciting things you’ll share with us. 🙌 Also love how your studio is coming along! 😍
As someone who has lived in Oregon my whole life and saw the aurora from my house…. I’ve never been to Crater Lake and I’m extremely jealous.
the road circling the lake is closed until summer but it was so gorgeous!! you've gotta go
"Lower barrier to entry part of my creative practice" is exactly why I got into gouache too. I was mostly acrylic painting and some oil painting, but I would always get bogged down by how long the setup and cleanup took. I can paint with gouache at my desk and I love being able to set up faster, it makes getting into the studio much easier.
If you're still into plein air painting and sketching, I've found gouache good for that too since it's so portable in dry form. Excited to hear you speak at the artist summit today!
Your gouache painting is really good. I watched different videos with different paintings like Acrylic, oil, watercolor and so forth. I’m just learning to paint as a beginner and videos like yours really helps understanding with different paintings. Great video. See you in the next one. Cheers 😎😎😎🔥🔥🔥
I'm in art school currently (almost done, thank God) and I was doing a minor in painting, because I wanted to learn the skills, and I dropped that dream quickly because I took two painting classes that were LITERALLY, "Hello, welcome. Write me an entire essay of an entire series of medium to grand scale paintings that you will do the entire semester." And the moment I asked, "But aren't you going to teach us to paint?" My professor looked me dead in the eye and said, "You're supposed to enter here already knowing how to paint."
It was an oil painting class, and I hadn't touched a singular oil paint at this point, and I got so overwhelmed I left entirely. He then had the audacity to say that if we didn't know how to paint with oils, to just look it up on RUclips.....
The painting in greyscale reminds me sooooo much of a painting I did in highschool of some glaciers! wow!
I still really enjoy your content to this day and I even though you may not feel like you are creating as many "hits" as you said, I am always happy when you upload and always enjoy your videos. You've been a great help and inspiration to me. 💖
Love seeing you thrive and settle into the new space!!!
lets gooo i am loving the vibes in this video
I'm sorry you haven't had as many "hits." For what it's worth, I still love your videos.😊
Wow! I thought it was only my school that did all the touch feely stuff and skipped fundamentals 🤔 that’s crazy. I was resentful for a long time. I don’t get to use the title “self-taught” even though I did largely teach myself. People rightfully expect that you have a much broader experience as a graduate.
I think you could totally use the "self taught" label if you wanted to! If you feel like you've been mostly teaching yourself, then the label applies at least in my opinion. I think people get too pedantic when it comes to the strict definition of the word
Loved this video! 😊
This is incredible
I'm trying to start my youtube
And also a channel for just all my art stuff
I have alot to do And you inspired me
Thank you Kelsey!

At 12:46....would you mind sharing where you got that amazing brush holder? 🤩
it's from Peg and Awl on Etsy! They don't currently have any in stock but I LOVE IT and would definitely recommend! www.etsy.com/shop/PegandAwl
Great video
I just want say… I LOVE that bookshelf… where is it from?😂😂❤❤
West Elm! Would definitely look on FB marketplace or wherever you get used furniture before buying full price though
❤❤❤
The bg music for a minute and a half is so loud and its hard to hear you at that time.
hear me out: I need you to buy a 4k camera
I've got one, I just film in 1080p. Is 4k worth the hassle re: file sizes and editing with proxy media? Happy to try it out
@@KelseyRodriguez maybe a little slower to edit but GOSH the results are delightful!
