Mike spared us all from watching me measure, measure twice, and then measure thrice, all those inch and foot marks! That was probably the most finicky part of making this Scout Staff (with the fishing line a close second!). With enough of the right tools, though, this could be a great build night for your Troop. Who hasn't watched their Scouts grab sticks off the forest floor during a hike? We all love 'em, so making your own could be a fun exercise. Canadian Scouts have this as a badge requirement, and you can customize them every which-way. My other long staff (I believe a branch of sugar maple) has every Group I've been part of up the shaft, and I could easily see Scouts putting the name of their Patrols on. Another great customization is cutting a narrow, shallow notch in for every 5-mile hike you take your staff on!
@@Scoutadelic Outdoor Adventure Skills. Scoutcraft, Stage 6, point 10: "From wood I have not harvested from a live source, I have carved and used my own hiking 'Scout' staff on a trail hike." We prefer at least five hiking days before clearing the requirement, but that note about "I have not harvested from a live source" puts, IMO, both deadfall and commercially-made dowel on equal footing. While a tree was cut down for that dowel, it almost certainly would have been sustainably sourced, with new trees planted to replace it. I imagine at least Gasóga na hÉireann and Scouts Australia will have something rather similar!
Ooh, that sounds like it'd be pretty. I've got a six-foot maple staff that's been varnished within an inch of its life, and a four-foot birch walking stick that also a work-in-progress... someday, I'll decide what else is happening with it and finish it!
