Palo Alto Official Trailer #1 (2014) - James Franco, Emma Roberts Movie HD
Shy, sensitive April (Emma Roberts) is the class virgin, torn between an illicit flirtation with her soccer coach Mr. B (James Franco) and an unrequited crush on sweet stoner Teddy (Jack Kilmer). Emily (Zoe Levin), meanwhile, offers sexual favors to every boy to cross her path - including both Teddy and his best friend Fred (Nat Wolff), a live wire without filters or boundaries. As one high school party bleeds into the next - and April and Teddy struggle to admit their mutual affection - Fred's escalating recklessness starts to spiral into chaos. An unflinching portrait of adolescent lust, boredom, and self-destruction, PALO ALTO is a teen movie for the ages - an astonishing debut feature from writer-director Gia Coppola, based on the book "Palo Alto: Stories" by James Franco and featuring new music from Devonté Hynes (Blood Orange).

I loved this film. It's gotten lots of criticism for not being "deep" enough, but sometimes I feel you can simply enjoy the style and mood of a movie without it having to be a gruelling social commentary. I could relate to this on so many levels, because April's character is actually that of a very typical schoolgirl - she has friends and goes to parties, she wants to do well in school, and yet she's also got that adolescent sense of rebellion that most of us have instilled in us. The kids in this film just want something to happen, they're frustrated by the immobility of their lives, and yet it's actually a very sweet, touching, realistic film :) You don't always need extreme drama and unrealistically tragic circumstances to make a good film.
I didn't get the character of Fred though, what was his problems, why was he acting like he was?
So True !
***** I'm not sure I fully understood that either. Maybe he was scared of growing up - he could see Teddy starting to become more serious and perhaps he couldn't cope with the idea that he'd soon have to let his childhood go. He had sex with Emily without understanding that you can't just use people and control them like he wanted to control Teddy and Emily both, and I guess he was just a very self-destructive person. (Plus his dad was basically a gay stoner, wasn't he? That would mess with anyone's mind.) Not sure though, he was an interesting character. Technically speaking a really unpleasant guy, but a really broken person all the same.
***** Yep, I guess that's partially why it didn't have any massively deep plot. Unfortunately, most of the time, we're not nearly the deep thinkers we think we are :p
His father probably molested him, there was some clear sexual abuse between him and his father
I absolutely LOVE the cinematography of this movie, everything is so beautiful even if sometimes sad
agree
+Juliana awwwwww
agree
hey that’s my name too!! hehee
Where can I watch this tho?😔 Couldn't find it anywhere
Look at that, James Franco playing himself.
Maybe he was trying to promote the movie. Or research a role?
Lol
yeah james franco just wandered into the shot and seemed so relaxed, but its an indie movie so its cool right
Méghane C.Talbot It was not a publicity stunt actually. He went on the show Kelly and Michael to talk about the incident. Look it up on RUclips. I still love him either way! I think he's brilliant.
nea22nea it was definitely a pr stunt lmao
I dont know what it is but there's something about this movie that is so hypnotic. I never get tired of watching it.
Same
THE MUSIC GIVES ME SO MANY FEELS
Devonté Hynes - April's daydream
or
Devonté Hynes - Palo Alto
all of dev hyne's music is amazing actually
Beth Roger Thanks goodness for this trailer or I would have never discovered Dev Hynes - Palo Alto. Incredible song, I've already learned the chords and lyrics, just beautiful and yes - real
WORD SAME
Do any of you know the name of the song or melody played at the beginning??
emma roberts has kissed all the hotest guys first, freddie highmore then evan peters and now james franco. dammm
montse miranda she isn't even that pretty wtf😭
***** Is the way of the RUclips, young Padawan
montse miranda AND she's engaged with Evan Peters
montse miranda she even kissed Dave Franco
Yeah... some girls had to kiss, and then more, Harvey "Swinestein" trying to get a role... maybe Oprah would consider Harvey for her vice president
everytime i watch this movie i notice something new and i fall in love with it everytime over and over... also this movie does need a crazily deep plot to make you feel or think about it
I can agree with every word you just said
Me too
In a way, it does have a deep plot. All of the characters are trying to 'find themselves' in different ways, and attempting to unrealistically sync and relate themselves to each other when they're going through difference things.
I just watched this movie...I think it's actually a work of pure genius. The reality of the film is what makes it beautiful. The way it focuses on the meaningless of our day-to-day lives. I think that's what gives it a deeper and more powerful meaning, because it's just so brutally honest.
Emma's line to Val Kilmer "You could've just corrected it. You didn't have to rewrite the whole thing." That has a very deep meaning if you've seen the movie and are mature enough.
+Arjun Kumar what is your opinion?
IMO the lines implies that youngsters need to be corrected for sure but taking full control of their lives is not the answer.
+Arjun Kumar I never noticed that!
+Arjun Kumar thanks, ive always wondered what the point was for that part in the movie
Is this about my life when I was in high school? Good job to whoever wrote this movie.
okay this movie makes me emotional in many ways i can and cannot describe and leaves me in a world of sadness and i wish i could live a life like april and UgHH i just really appreciate the beauty and softness of this movie. makes me feel something ive never felt before.
me too :) im glad you out it into words
It's like a John Hughes film
+Kamile Balciunaite im glad we can both agree to things like this
+Cody Brooks sadly, i don't think ive ever seen one of those
It an amazing movie, a cinematography masterpice. I dont get the "i wish i could live a life like april" like I really dont get the hype. From my prespective shes not even a main caracter, I mean she is but the movie aint really about her... Her life was quit avrage. Whats so good about it?
the cinematography in this movie is soooo amazing. it really makes this movie.
Franco wrote a set of stories called Palo Alto, and is starring in this movie, BECAUSE he went to Palo Alto high school. I graduated from the same school, 2 years ahead of him.
What, that is cool :D
Boo yea! Vikings rule! i graduated from Paly, but waay after Franco... Im interested to see his take on life as a Palo Alto teen..
PALY is a great school so she/we should be lucky to be able to go there. I went to JLS middle school.
currently attending there :)
Ranger do you know of the guy Franco plays? Read my post above. Franco said that teacher is real and is in jail. I am not sure if in jail today but Franco did say he went to prison..
Ok so i watched this because emma is in it... i am the type of person who will watch any stupid american movie but this movie spoke to me, i have never felt that before, i related to this movie so much and i just started crying, i never cry i like to keep things bottled up but this movie just kind of set me free in a weird way. It was so beautifully filmed.
yes me too
Talk about method acting
you win the internet
I kinda wish it was longer
yesss
That's what she said.
same
Me too aahh
It''s begging for a tv series.
James Franco and Emma Roberts? Shut up and take my money.
ikr. lol
Im sorry that what dictates whether or not to see a movie
u ain't got no money
Similar vibes in these movies: Ashby, prozac nation, I origins, virgin suicides, men women children (extremely good with the guy from fault in our stars), perks of being a wallflower, Homeroom
I was looking for a good movie, I think I've found plenty. Thank you!
thank uuuu
You want to see a movie with a similar and even more disturbing vibe, check out KIDS (1995). That's a fucked up movie, on so many levels.
KIDS (1995) is a good ass disturbing movie if you liked this and The Virgin Suicides and all the others you should definitely watch KIDS
YAS TYTY BLESS
I love Emma Roberts so much! She is an amazing actress
this movie is depressing .. but this is realistic on so many angles and it looks like it's my life in an entire movie.
why depressing ? did they not end up together ?
nope . watch the movie , it's worth it but it's depressive as hell
Pedro Melo y’all are boosting tf out of this movie it’s really not that depressing, just has no plot
roxanne - aw poor you
Ace Solo *never pays attention to any movie on ever**
If you are looking for a dark film about teenage angst, depression, and self-destruction then I suggest watching this film. There is just something about it that feels real... the characters and the choices they make and the consequences they are forced to face that result from those choices. I especially felt sorry for Fred. He was a textbook case for someone with a self-destructive personality and somehow I got the feeling he would not live to see thirty.
One of the best movies I've seen in a while. Nat Wolf is amazing in this.
K
Stop recommending this crap please
James franco followed me on instagram :'DD #lovemybaeteddy
for proof : Instagram: amandamagana
I saw this film three days ago and haven't stopped thinking about it since. Amazing music, cinematography, and characters!
The aesthetics of this film are to DIE for....but the story is slightly lacking i find..wonderfully edited trailer tho
+youmeandi100 I second that!
i disagree
@@katslife5500 lool I made the original comment 5 years ago but cool thanks for sharing 😅
I liked it, made me question my youth. All the positives and negatives I've made. Made me question my friends and my actions. Feel different.
I think Palo Alto is simply amazing. It does a phenomenal job of illustrating teenage angst and confusion within all the characters. After reading comments I can see why a lot of people are skeptical. The film is to the point and I think the simplicity that everyone is arguing about speaks for itself. There was no need for a mainstream media ending or adding more dialogue for the sake of the storyline...Also, from an actor's point of view the cast did a superb job of connecting with their other. I definitely saw traces of Robert Cohen's method of acting throughout a lot of the cast which made me love it even more. In the end, Gia Coppola captures something very real and poignant by giving us a brief peek into the lives of a group of well-off Californian high schoolers. Then ending it with an abrupt and discomforting feeling that life sometimes leaves us with. If it were done in any other way it would have subtracted from the film's simplistic nature which I think carried the entire movie. It also would have taken away from one of the most prominent if not the most prominent message of the entire flick. The line stated by James Franco who wrote the original short stories and who plays the "older" coach that is in love with a student. "You're young...You don't know why you do things." In that moment you can clearly see the contrast between a slightly older person who has a better grasp on their intentions and who they are, and a teenager like most, faking apathy because of the exposing fact that they truly have no clue what they want or care about. Palo Alto! :)
I feel like this movie is most relatable if you are from California. especially if you are a middle class teen and live in a suburban neighborhood. the way fred and teddy talked, the way they dressed (vans), and the fact that every other person was a stoner. This movie definitely made me reminisce about my youth as teen and did a fine job at portraying modern day California high school culture. plot or no plot this was film was entertaining to watch. I've never been to Palo Alto, but being from Southern California I say it was pretty accurate.
Yes I have friends exactly like Teddy but I grew up in southern Alabama.
+gggXaaa exactly. i live in southern california and this movie is a perfect representation of the teenagers in my area
exactly, same here. i'm from san diego and this was pretty accurate
I’m from San Jose(next to Palo alto) and this pretty accurate
same im from palo alto and the clips of the town are really accurate
I’ve heard so many people say this film isn’t deep, but when you actually sit down to analyze it, it is extremely meaningful and relatable
take a shot every time someone smokes in this movie
this James Franco Bio pic looks to be spot on
Underrated post.
i wish there was more of James Franco, especially at the end.
I love this movie soooo much. All the feelings in it were so perfect. Truly highschool.
This movie is absolutely amazing. All the actors were incredible. This is probably Nat's best performance yet.
I wish april (emma) and teddy (jack) had more of a connection because in the entire movie they're relationship was absent.
I couldn't agree more.
jsoto2747 I think that was the whole point though :/
This is one of the Best movies about being a teenager because it pretty Much shows the basic life of a normal teenager. Not anything too crazy, just the bad decisions and heartbreaks a Young person goes through. Amazing movie👌
Love this movie, perfectly captures the confusion and angst in high school. Love the score from Dev Hynes he did an amazing job capturing the nostalgia of high school
This movie is depressing.
María Florencia That's reality of teenage life. Unfortunately..
I could relate to this film so much, the story, characters, the mood. I have friends who remind me so much of the characters, I've been in similar situations...its by far the most accurate movie about adolescence I've ever seen.
I live in Palo Alto. I haven't seen the movie but it seems from the trailer that a lot of the aspects of living here were left out. It looks like an ordinary town, but everyone is filthy rich. I hear conversations at school about people's new yachts and how many houses or credit cards they have. If your not a multimillionaire, you probably don't live here.
Not necessarily, I live in Palo Alto but I'm not filthy rich, I live in an apartment with my family. We're not rich, just middle class.
Diana Hamidi Yeah but there all a lot of people here who are.
elizabeth moore If I marry you, would I also be added to this Palo Alto Rich universe?
elizabeth moore really? I see the occasional rich person but not most.
so what's this a subliminal way of saying your a filthy rich multimillionaire, with alot of credit cards and a new yacht? lol
This film is really inspiring, true and aestethically pleasing oh my lord sooo good
so much love for James franco
Ahh im so excited! This cast looks amazing
beautiful movie. beautiful story lines and it's finally a realistic high school movie.
The music was fantastic.
idc i still love this movie
Been waiting for a good high school movie.. that actually brings back memories.
The absolute most realest film and book series
I love this movie so freaking much
This movie is so underrated wow
Yeah... people prefers watching shit like "The fault in our stars"
+Chicco Delle seriously tell me about it.
why?
this is honestly one of the best trailers i have ever seen Even if the movie didn't exactly meet my expectations, everything was artfully arranged. Soundtrack, acting, everything
this movie i will watch over and over again
yup definitely about to watch it AND franco is in it, yes!
devonte hynes😍😍😍
watched this movie yesterday and it's already my FAV
Absolutely loved this
this movie is a characterization masterpiece.
I wish I could have focused more on the movie and not how perfect Jack Kilmer is.
YEEEEEEES
***** jokes on you hollie IM 16
He's so cute
This was my euphoria
Love the song. Hopefully, they release it soon!

Is this what growing up in america is like. Because it isn't that insane in Germany.
USA maybe? It's not like that in Canada either.
is the film in germany release? :o I want to see it :D
No, I'm from America and its not like that at least where i live.
haha maybe just in Palo Alto then xD
Yeah
Downloading Right now James....Thanks for the movie !
GUYS THE SONG IS CALLED "PALO ALTO" BY DEVONTE HYNES
Why I don't have a teacher like Franco?
cos real teachers are ugly
This movie was amazing! I loved it.
actually give this film more attention its GREAT
i never thought about it when i first saw this movie but in the scene where april says that man “you could’ve just corrected, not rewrite the whole thing” it’s like what some adults do to younger people like they don’t let us explore or do things by ourselves, we just need advice and experience life…
don't know why, but this movie gave me really strange, nostalgic feels; the cinematography, the music. i've never even experienced anything like what happens in the movie.
We're white, we're spoiled, we're bored.. deal with it. All the while inner city teenagers struggle with the lack of money and opportunities, and constantly walking in fear of being shot by cops. The cinematography is the only thing that didn't bore me in this fatalistic movie. Kids did a much better job at showing the angst and the bleakness of teens in New York who have no future.
Yeah if teens didn't have a future then the world would be over pretty soon wouldn't it? Stop Generalizing.
+Jeffrey Kee (Musiclover999) I'm a teenager from a poor country and I do a lot of this stuff (drinking, smoking).
The previous generation always complain about the last generation. I think a generation that has so much connectivity still bitches and complain I blame you're parents.
Song is Palo Alto by Devonte Hynes for anyone looking around !!!
Beautiful trailer
Great film. I absolutely loved Emma and James' acting. Brilliant. I already read the book, also brilliant. Dev Hynes made really good songs, btw.
Can't wait to see it, it looks fantastic.
Jon Capezzuto you can watch it online, mate! :)
Jon Capezzuto hey, also, you should listen to the movie's theme 'Palo Alto' by Devonté Hynes. Absolutely brilliant. You can find the track in my yt channel ;)

aesthetics/ grunge movies are the love of my life
Do you guys know any others like this?
+Paula Maria Sanz Jara flipped, virgin suicides, stepmother, 10 things i hate about you. Some of these are beautifully sad others are pure acceptance to the sadness but flipped is a happy movie mixed with curiosity
+blissful .flower thanks ^^
grunge? Since when did movies become grunge?
gotta love perks of being a wallflower
reality bites is an oldy
omg this looks amazing
awesome cast
I've seen it three times. It's perfect. Never felt like this about a movie*-*
HiiiAitana same omg
Am I the only one that likes the trailer more than the movie...
This looks beautiful.
one of the best movies
Why does this look so interesting?
Emma Roberts is AMAZING 💖💖💖💖💖
The best movie I've ever seen.
ooomg , emma and james together. love them
Obviously I'm sold with Franco, and curious about Emma Roberts' role, but I'm happy to see Val Kilmer back onscreen in a solid movie and what his son Jack is capable of.
So when James Franco was hitting on that underage girl and texting her he was just in character practicing method acting hahaha
cannot wait to see this film!!!
I loved the vibe of this movie
Am I the only one who is really torn about this movie?
I liked the acting and the cinematography is beautiful. I really like these kind of movies usually, ones that have a strong visual style, the use of music, just the way the title pops up on the screen is amazing. But it feels like the people who made it just tought "Yeah, we shot this in such a cool way, we don't need a story or anything!"
Don't get me wrong, I get that is supposed to be that kind of a movie, a movie with no particular plot for the sake of not having one, but a movie still needs a plot. Excluding Fred, none of the characters have any personality, they're all just "confused teenagers" who do stupid shit because they're "confused teenagers". All the "I love you"s come out of nowhere and have nothing happening in the movie to back them up, while Teddy and April, particularly the former don't even have a real story arc, they just kinda bounce around through hipsterly-shot scenes because they can. The dialogue, which is sometimes great is set up in the weirdest, most unrealistic way possible. Nobody just goes randomly sitting somewhere and talking about suicide and then goes to sit somewhere else and talks about something else pretentiously deep like that. You can have dialogue like that, just at least set it up in a better way, if you're already pretending like this is some "realistic portrayal of high school life".
I loved a few aspects of the movie, but I downright hated others, so I guess it balances out to an "ok". It wasn't exactly a waste of 2 hours, but I just can't get how people can love something so empty, pretentious and in love with it's hipness.
"how people can love something so empty, pretentious and in love with it's hipness. " maybe for a lot of ppl that was why they loved it. it's its* hipness btw.
it's a different thing to say the story was empty by mistake, and another to say that that was what made the story work. the characters have a lot going on but no one to speak to. they fancy each other but get it off with others. they have friends who are bad for them and lives that look good but are shit. it's reality for a lot of ppl, a reality that's empty beneath its vibrant surface and i think it strikes a chord with ppl and makes them think, "i know how that character feels: a lot and nothing at the same time". no there is no real story, but that's what makes it feel honest - because teenagers don't have stories; they're just stuck with random things that go nowhere
maybe that was the point of the producers and writers, and maybe it wasn't
think it would have been a drag, a long corny drag to watch them get intimate and like each other first, only to have everything that happened in the movie, happen between them later.
the point of the movie was to use its cinematography and "hipster-y shot scenes" was to capture the emotions of the average teenager, not so much for the plot
daylite34 Yeah, but a movie consists of many things, cinematography, music, acting, directing and most importantly, STORY. This should could've been just a long music video or trailer or experimental video or anything, but if you attempt at making a movie, having no story on purpose still means not having a story.
Also, I am 16 and I get the whole "confused teenager" thing quite well and I still don't think that's an excuse for lousy writing.
DarklordofDOOM57 I understand! I am 17 and I was really confused the first time I saw an emotion-driven indie movie with not much plot. But there are different types of genres which focus on different things. Most mainstream movies which we have been exposed to (and I love) are mostly plot-driven rather than emotion-driven, so that's what we're used to. These indie movies are supposed to be more realistic because, let's be honest, these events and stories may not be the most exciting, but they are most realistic to what average teenagers go through and experience. There's no right or wrong type of movie, it's just a different genre. I don't think it's lousy writing, since some of the conversations and jokes the teenagers were written saying in the movie seemed like believable banter that I hear around my high school
Only thing I'm torn about is when older actors play under 18 actors. Its a lame cop out.
James Franco pulled a similar stunt before the Spring Breakers premiere.
what kind of stunt? what?
I love the music from this movie.😍😍😍
Need to see this movie ASAP
Palo alto means high stick in spanish
I guess it could mean that( I don't speak Spanish) but historically it was supposed to mean "tall tree" because when these people came they saw a redwood I think and they were all like oh look it this "tall tree" or that's what my class was taught.
someone give Jack Kilmer more attention he was great in this film
one of my favs
This is one of my fav movie ever and I’m in love with Nat Wolff
franco likes them ripe
+Malibu Thompson You mean unripe?
***** So eat fruits and vegetables when they're still green?
+Malibu Thompson "Ripe" sounds like the wrong word to use. You know? Ripe is when a fruit matures... 40 year old women are ripe.
***** The exact definition of ripe on google is "fully matured". also "having arrived at such a stage of growth or development as to be ready for reaping". so its the exact opposite of young.
Ophelia Bloom Right. Read my last comment. "Ripe" sounds like the right word initially but its backwards.
there's a chainsaw in the movie!, that's enough im in.
Loved this film
I can't wait to see this!
