    Sin's a super unknown French band. Apart from "V-rally 2", they've been featured on "NFS underground 2" as well, with their 'Hard EBM" song. They released two albuns, "Noisy pipes, lovely noises" on the early 2000s and "Errare digital est" on 2004. They're also insanely good from a broader perspective, not just from a unknown band one.

    Peugeot 405 Turbo 16? I'm in!
    Love the graphics from that era...
    Why today racing games don't run at 60FPS anymore???
    *Test Drive: Le Mans* is probably the finest racing game ever made on dreamcast, running at 480P and 16:9 ratio, look pretty damn good even today. MSR and Ferrari F355 Challenge are great too.

    Great review! I have little to no interest in racing games, but your passion for game design, your calm voice, and detailed analysis of each game's highs and lows make your videos very entertaining. Keep it up!

    The best rally games Ive played were neo drift out, sega rally and rallysport challenge for the original xbox.

      BEST Rally Games:
      - Rallisport Challenge 2 (xbox)

    I somewhat missed this review, I think it's quite fair, thanks :)
    Regarding the AI, no it was not hardcoded, it does use real time decision to decide what to do... but some of these elements are the navigation help that as you mentioned are quite flawed and don't detect bumps, and at some point the cars were trying to avoid each other but I believe that was causing even more problems so the code may have been tweaked down.
    The tracks were not auto-generated, but there was basically only one track designer, it was his first project, and we could say that Infogrames QA was basically only checking for bugs, there was no real quality testing for the playability, and when the dev team has been playing the same tracks again and again for months, they get expert at it and don't realize how terrible some places are.

    I overlooked the V-Rally 2 for the Dreamcast several times while looking for new titles for my collection. Now think it actually looks cool, especially with this track editor. I bet split screen is funny with those silly looking flipping cars. This video was helpful! Thanks! I am waiting form more Sega Dreamcast games!

      implantgames They pronounce it (and how it should be pronounced) - "per-zhoe". Sorry if I come across as a bit of a dick, I mean well!
      Also I'm guessing the next review will be V Rally 3? I've been playing it recently and it's a surprisingly good rally game, looks amazing too (especially when selecting your car and being able to see all the car and it's parts )

    • @implantgames
      @implantgames  7 лет назад +1

      Well I tried to get it right, at least I didn't say pew-got :D V-Rally 3 will be a future video, though I did play it already for a bit. The self-centering steering is strange though, not as bad as Vanishing Point but still strange.

    Infogrames know how to make good dreamcast racers. Maybe review Test Drive Le Mans (Le Mans 24 Hours) which has 2 different developers and 2 different versions.

    • @implantgames
      @implantgames  7 лет назад +7

      The Dreamcast version of Test Drive: Le Mans just might be the finest racing game ever made :) Along with Forza Motorsport 2, it's one of the few racers I prefer to play with no driving aids and manual shifting, simply because everything responds to predictably. Such a gem! Wacky Racers is also a stellar kart racer. I loved Infogrames during the Dreamcast years!

      Ken Murawski also Daytona USA 2001 runs at 480p 60fps! It's a beautiful game, maybe the controls are a little chaotic at the first time but later it plays great!

    I never got into the V-Rally games, and I think you hit the nail on the head. I could never put my finger on it, but the cars really do feel light, and the courses are pretty lackluster.

    • @implantgames
      @implantgames  7 лет назад

      The lightness was actually brought to my attention by a viewer on the V-Rally 1 review a few weeks back. He was absolutely correct, the weight is light. Especially for the track designs presented.

      The one thing you kind of missed is that the track editor really is amazing, I created some wonderfully fun tracks on it, but as you said it also shows up how lazy the actual game's track design is. People used to criticize Sega Rally for only having 4 tracks, but 4 great, well designed tracks is better than a hundred bland, boring ones.

    Loved V-Rally 2 on PS1 but then when i got the DC version it just didnt feel as good & it didnt hold my attention very long at all. Cant remember why, could have been the controller not being very suitable for it, i remember it being absolutely useless with the DC official wheel (or i was just useless with it). I still have it so maybe will have to dust it off & try it again sometime.

    The Control is not so great, when you try to turn the car will not always turn and if you slide off the track it's hard to get back on. I can't figure out the track editor it's not easy to intuitive to use. The second Track in Arcade Level2 is too damn hard and you can't tell where the sides of the road are in some areas causing you to run of the road because you don't know which way to turn to follow the track. The Graphics are great. It is easier than Sega Rally 2 Championship , which is much harder to win a 10 Year Rally or Arcade Tournament even on Easy at least for me it is for me, I can never complete Arcade or 10 Championship even on Easy but in V-Rally I could at least complete Level 1 Arcade and was able to finish V-Rally Trophy mode mode in third place but have not tried championship yet. One annoying thing about it is you can't exit and save in the middle of a arcade race at the end of each course to resume later, you have to race all tracks in one sitting.

    I remember to spend hours playing this game!
    I've got nothing more to do in the game so I always made my own track a hill that I could reach the max speed in each car, and I love the cockpit view.
    And love the soundtrack too.
    There's a music in this game that actually is in a movie of Jason Statham.

    From what I remember in a magazine interview with the developers back in the day, the tracks were created from a selection of 'blocks' of different track types which they then stitched together to suit. The track design put me off the game back in the day and I sold the game shortly after buying it (the original Sega Rally on Saturn spoiled me!)

    • @garywintle8023
      @garywintle8023 6 лет назад +3

      On the up side the track editor enables you to make your own tracks. The track editor is pretty damn great, much more customization than most.

  • @RetroGamingPanama

    I played this game last year to completion and I agree with all the flaws you mentioned. Those damn bumps that flips the cars are horrendous!
    I didn't use the track editor on the game as I just like to play the normal courses but now that you mentioned it on the video it does looks like the developers used the track editor to make the built in tracks and just didn't test them out thoroughly thus making the bumps and some corner-cuts more car flippable. Also the cars felt like they are made of paper.
    There are some other good points to the game that were not mentioned, like in Championship mode you get proper rally mechanics, time to repair and car setups that do have an impact. On the tough asphalt snow course in Arcade i was able to beat it using super low suspension, quick gears, asphalt tires, over-steer and almost no breaks.
    Also it has 4 player multiplayer options and its fun to race and try to flip your opponent!
    Overall it is a good Rally game and dare I say better than Sega Rally Championship 2on the Dreamcast.

      VGSoundtrackGuy Dreamcast only lived 3 years and PS2 stayed alive 13 years. Developers improved a lot the graphics on PS2 compared to DC. Sadly, but now we never see the full power of the Dreamcast.

    It is a very good game. ALthough the car flips over way too easy and the controls are just OK..If these two things would have been tweaked it would have been a 9 out 10. Because of these two things it gets a 7 in my book.

    Good review with great technical details on the game; the 16:9 mode certainly is a great bonus.
    I always thought it looked muddy, back in the day when I had a Dreamcast. Framerate is pretty smooth though. But not a very exciting game IMO.
