Newton's cradle is great example of transfer inertia from one ball to another. When basketball hit ground, hammer also hits at top of it. If hammer hit to a spring, it jump back to less height because of losing energy via friction of air. Basketball and hammer gain kinetic energy when they are falling.
If basketball transfers it's kinetic energy to the hammer at moment of hit the ground thus, hammer might jump back same height where it was dropped. I don't think it gains lot of kinetic energy from basketball.
