Good video. @ 6:20 ish you mention they are using ND filters and are somewhat perplexed about the ND filter not covering both lens. How cinematic mode actually works is with just the Wide lens and the lidar. The lidar creates a depth map and this is how you are able the adjust it after the fact with that depth map data.
When Cinematic mode first arrived it was said that it used two cameras along with LiDAR. A bit like how Macro mode uses the ultra wide to focus even when shooting with the Tele or Wide. The lenses get “combined” via software. If Cinematic mode only used the Wide then it would seem you could add an external lens to it like the anamorphic, but it doesn’t work when doing that. So I’m still not sure exactly how it works as it appears to use LiDAR with a mix of cameras/lenses. I just hope in the 14 we’ll be able to shoot 4K 24FPS. Thanks for watching!
Hey, Blake! It’s always nice to see these films Apple does. I’ve scoured RUclips watching videos shot on iPhones, good and not so good. It’s inspiring and it’s sort of like the shot of adrenaline I need to keep going, even though I really don’t need it. Always good nevertheless. Keep the videos coming, man. I always enjoy watching.
It is not a water drop (it would be too fluid). it's probably gel, like medical gel for ultrasounds, which is water-soluble and whose fluidity can be adjusted by adding water
Fantastic video Thank You 🙏🏻. I’ve just updated my iPhone CS Max 512GB to this new 13 Pro Max 1TB and take delivery this coming Monday 6th Dec (Western Australia). I have also purchased a Smallrig cage to house my MOMENT Lenses. I am so looking forward to filming with it and this video has inspired me to no end. Cheers iSpike
wow this is awesome . since i got my iphone 11 last month, i have been using it to shoot all my vlogs and just add some drone shots. I am really inspired
I have had that weird tripod for years…Never use it… I think it was called a UFO. Maybe Ill bust it out since it’s famous. Great breakdown! I do wonder why they don’t make an no filter protective cover instead of that clip on.
I’m wondering do they skip the gimbal because it’s easier to get the shot handheld? Or do they want the handheld look? Or is the 13 stabilization more than adequate enough to compensate for the jitters
You should review the Shot on iPhone 13 Pro | A Park Chan-wook film - Life is But a Dream | Apple. It's the most film thing I have seen from all of their films. Especially low-light sections are amazing!
Hey, I'm sorry to bother you with a question, but I really enjoyed the 30-to-24 conversion part of the video. Could you explain what's the difference between conforming to 24p for slow-mo and conversion? How can I achieve both methods? I would love to shoot in cinematic mode but run it in 24p without looking slower.
I’m actually planning to do a video on this topic. There are several ways to do it with varying results. Kind of depends on what editing software you’re using. But Basically you need to interpret or conform to 24P. Which is similar to removing pulldown back in the day, although that was interlaced and this is not. If the footage is pretty static then simply dropping the 30p in a 24P timeline in FCP or Premiere can get OK results. However, if there’s movement or panning etc. then you’ll get stuttery frames. So in those cases it’s probably best to use an app like Compressor or After Effects. Again though, there are a multitude of ways to do this. Hope that helps a little, and look for a video on this in the near future. Thanks for watching!
Great break down Blake, very informative and inspiring. Im about to start making videos again for the first time since my Canon 5D mk ll DSLR days, do you think the iPhone 13 pro max is an upgrade from the Canon 5d mk ll? I'm feeling a bit more exited about the iPhone 13 pro than my canon DSLR.
It’s an upgrade as it relates to technological advances like shooting 10-bit ProRes or HDR, etc, but not overall image quality. The 5Dmk2 was a beast of a camera and still looks good today with that full frame sensor. However, I’m more excited about smartphone tech today than DSLR or mirrorless as well. The form factor and ease of use are huge with phones and now today the image quality is getting great too. Still not the same as a prosumer traditional camera, but not far behind either. I’ve heard Apple’s goal is to make their phones compete head-to-head with the prosumer mirrorless video market. They already do with photography and now video is getting there, too.
@@iphoneographers Many thanks for your reply Blake, I just wasn't feeling the 5Dmkll when I picked it up again, but as you say you can still get some great footage from it so may be useful yet? the new advancments in technology in the mobile phone area feels exiting, lots to look forward to. I might not be able to resist getting the iPhone 13 pro at some point soon. Thanks for your videos and sharing all the experience you have, its much appreciated.
Ha, maybe! But I’m actually still waiting for a Moment case or really ANY case to attach lenses or filters to. The accessory makers are waaaaaaaay behind this year.
I think the bottom line is that the iPhone has gotten to the point where it is VERY useable for applications where super-crisp/super sharp imagery is not needed- that could be much narrative and documentary work, as well as video 'portraits'.... Pixel peeping single frames is not how the average viewer sees video. Certainly it is not ready for 8K still frame grabs! As a DSLR shooter I spend a lot of my post production time in softening images - the super high-res digital sensors are too crisp for many applications- that is a major reason why their is such a resurgence in love for the analogue film look!
Glad to hear that as I think a lot of people are under the wrong impression that sharp equals better (not talking about focus of course). I often soften iPhone footage too. Softer, “creamy” images are something I try to achieve especially when doing anything narrative. Thanks for watching!
Ah, ok yeah that makes sense. Didn’t tie those two things together was too busy looking at the technical aspects and forgot about the actual story. Lol.
That was the most beautiful story ever... I cried
Good video.

i just love Simon, fight me.
I’m loving this DIY

Did they stabilize in post? That’s why no gimbals used?
Can you make one of these breakdowns for the Student Vertical films apple made?
Haven’t seen those, but did do this one… ruclips.net/video/TNG1ge43oU0/видео.html
The commercial is great… I must laugh each time the snowman is hit by the bicycle 😂😂😂😂😂

Sounds like a great setup. I need to checkout those Smallrig cages too, they look nice. Thanks for watching!
I wonder why there are seldom stabilizers / or gimbals on this 🤔 how do they keep it so stable
wow this is awesome . since i got my iphone 11 last month, i have been using it to shoot all my vlogs and just add some drone shots. I am really inspired
Very cool. Thanks for watching!
Hmm nd filters but it’s 37mm not 67mm they must not be using cinematic mode , interesting 🧐

They wanted a handheld look. And stabilization is good too.
I’m wondering with the 2 camera angles are the shooting with 1 tele 1 wide angle? Or ultra wide ? Or both tele

Yeah, that’s a good one and some really nice examples. Might consider doing a breakdown of that one too, thanks!

Cinematic mode is software not two cameras and sensor thats live focus and protake
Do you have an nd filter that you recommend?
Depends on the setup but really like the VND from Moment or FreeWell.
@@iphoneographers I wonder why they used 37mm filters hmm 🤔
Yeah it was an odd choice especially using Cinematic mode. Not sure why.
@ 8:51 the snow man is not melting, he is (sweating) because at that point the boy is destroying the other snowmen.
Truth to be told... Any new high end phone could do this short.
For sure, but the 13 is the only current phone with Cinematic mode, which they used a lot here.

I would assume they used the clip on NDs so the iPhone itself would not be covered in a case. Gotta still be able to see the merch (and logo)!

Love the breakdown!

I wonder why they didn’t use a tripod
I think it was not light outside of the street cause they lost power. That has to be the reason why is not even a porch light
Ah, ok yeah that makes sense. Didn’t tie those two things together was too busy looking at the technical aspects and forgot about the actual story. Lol.
You probably won’t believe this but saving Simon was recorded at my house
That’s pretty cool whether it’s true or not. 😉
2nd. Darn.
I actually watched the whole video before commenting.
