It makes sense. 10 years ago the sensors on digital film cameras were little bigger than what's in the iPhone. Sensor size doesn't matter as much with video except for huge changes in dynamic range.
Thank you so much for doing this interview. "no hard feelings" was by far my favorite fictional movie of the filmic pro contest finalists! I always wondered how they got this beautiful bokeh in the conversations out of their phone and now got the answer with all the gear and the lenses they used. Now I am somewhat gutted, that they didn't just use the phone on its own or at least stand-alone smartphone only lenses like the moment ones... Still great to hear all the insight on the process! thanks again
This is fantastic! I have been kicking around the notion of shooting another fashion film on my iPhone 12 Pro. I have the moment lenses and Filmic Pro. But now I am considering the beastgrip and DOF adapter! Thank you so much for sharing this.
great video! i'd love to know more about how they recorded the audio. i've had so many audio issues when recording audio separately with an iphone, as the variable framerate causes a loss of sync rather quickly.
Hey Ryan, we had heard there were some possible issues with the audio drifting out of sync when filming with the phone (not confirmed by our own tests though, but we decided to play it safe and keep the phone running minimally as possible), so we switched the internal audio off altogether inside Filmic Pro so all of our footage was silent. Thankfully we didn't run into any issues of drifting when it came to syncing our external audio from the Zoom recorder in post, it was just a highly tedious process of syncing manually with clap marks.
This is very incredible and inspirational. Phones can do magic when used tactfully however the story is another ingredient to the mix that always makes it stand out. Personally I plan to shoot a short film myself before the fall of this year, thank you!
I know the adapter makes focus looks soft but the soft looks kind of reminds me of how films used to be. Film is soft. Not sharp. So it can end up being an accidental stylistic choice. 🙂 I love this.
I was really impress with thier film. Really look like real cinematic movie. Have a ? if you can pick b/w anamophic or this DOF adaptor which one you will want only can pick one and why? Thanks!
Another Great Video.... You guys rock man, I am a fan of the beastgrip I have the DOF 2 adapter Hey I have a question at 8:26 and 9:46 of the video what kind of shoulder rig does that guy use with the bestgrip for those scenes I like that cool set up its looks ideal for stabilizing footage
Thais movie is very impressive look very movie like comparisons to other iPhone films can think of other iPhone films close and I assume DOF adaptor made a big diff
this maybe a dumb question because im barely on the verge of starting to film an actual short movie, but....you did use only one iphone right?.....if so..does that mean you did take after take after take on the same scene to position your self in the angle where the dialogue seem natural from one subject to another etc??
Yeah most indie filmmaking is done single camera. Sometimes if there are action shots you might run multiple cameras, or in heavy dialogue scenes it’s done occasionally. On bigger budget Hollywood movies running multiple cameras can be routine though.

Hey, I’m looking to start blogging using my iPhone with a shotgun rode mic. I’m looking to mount the mic on top of a landscape oriented iPhone, do you know of any device that will allow me to do this? Thankyou!
The Beastgrip will do this and give you a side handle to hold onto. Or you could try a simple tripod mount with a cold shoe and then attach it to a mini tripod like from Manfrotto. Check out our gear recommendations page to see if you might find something… www.iphoneographers.tv/apps-gear

@@iphoneographers yes but a little misleading. Lights and set, etc. All fine when saying “Shot on an iphone”. But when you say “shot on an iphone” but really using very expensive glass, it’s kind of deceptive. It gives people the notion that just with their phones they can get the same look.
It’s really not deceptive at all. It’s just an add on accessory that anyone can use. Those lenses and the DOF adapter simply add a shallow focus look. You can rent them for minimal expense (like $50) and you’re still using an iPhone and shooting through its lens. And using lights, etc. is what you do when making a film whether you’re shooting on a RED, Alexa or yes - an iPhone.

Use a separate device to record audio, always. On both the audio and video devices, make sure they are recording audio at 48 kHz rather than 44.1 kHz.

I think the problem of result is not the shot but the post production of a mobile phone footage
How can i produce something like this with my Xr? 😭😭
Where can we watch the movie?! I will pay for it haha
Will post a link once we know! :)
Great!!!!!
MOST filmmaking is “mobile”... To me, shooting with thousands of $$ on and around your phone kinda’ defeats the purpose.
Reminds me of the kids snowball fight. "Shot on an iphone" + extensions, mods, lenses, camera crew, lighting, professional DP.
Where is the short film?
Unfortunately haven’t heard an update on it’s public release. When we do will post a note.
Nice
Where can I see this film?
It’s playing festivals now and they said it’ll be online publicly later this year. We’ll post a link once we know more.
iPhoneographers thanks a lot
Try shooting another place in indonesia like central celebes. Salam Dari Indonesia

Film grain was added in post as a stylistic choice, but I couldn't disagree more about it being out of focus.
It’s in focus. You might be confusing shallow DOF with out of focus. Or RUclips compression could be making it look soft.
Bruh
Who says the video quality is good?... Its looking blurry n no sharp footage
I do. It’s awesome stuff. You don’t want your footage to be “sharp” when you’re making a movie.
Or just use regular camera :)
It is a big-budget production, shot with iPhone. Will not work for most of us.
with a crew of 5? lol
It definitely was not big budget... the five of us essentially went on a cheap Bali holiday but happened to sneak in a film while we were there.
Micro budget. Just a tribute to the filmmakers adding a lot of production value that makes it look big budget. That’s the coolest part!
