I love the video, and I'm a huge Beakman fan - I loved it growing up and my kids watch it today. There is a small mistake in the science in the video though. At 7:25, Beakman explains how magnets' field interaction increases in strength as they approach, but he also says that potential energy increases at this time as well. It doesn't; it's actually decreasing (though the force between them is definitely going up.) The magnets have maximum potential energy at infinite separation and lose energy as they approach in the same way that a ball gains potential energy as it is moved away from Earth. That's why it requires energy to separate them once they're stuck together (at a potential energy minimum.)
Thanks! But I'm afraid you are slightly mistaken. Yes, potential energy between two magnets (with opposite poles facing) is higher, the wider the distance between them. But not indefinitely, only up until the outer edges of the magnetic fields' attraction. The idea in that part of the video is that Beakman brings the magnets from a distance where they don't interact at all to a distance where they start to, thereby increasing the potential energy.
As the magnets get closer with opposite poles facing, the potential energy becomes more negative, not more positive. If the same poles were facing, they would become more positive. Magnetic fields don't have set distance limits. They go as far as photons go.
Think of potential energy like height. Positive potential energy (same poles facing) is like a hill (positive height). To move them closer, you need to go up the hill. This requires work or kinetic energy. Negative potential energy (opposite poles facing) is like a valley. Moving closer lets you do work, or increases your kinetic energy. Moving closer decreases your potential energy by making it more negative. This assumes you define zero potential energy as occurring an infinite distance away.
+Scott Barrie Hmm, well the "magnetic potential energy" section of this article (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potential_energy) says "If the opposite poles are held apart, the potential energy will be highest when they are at the edge of their attraction" It doesn't say it's highest when they are infinitely far apart. Is that incorrect?
For real, practical magnets on Earth, infinite separation and "far enough apart that you can't feel them attracting in any way" are essentially the same thing. However, if you put two magnets in space at that separation, the lack of all friction will show that they are still attracted to one another reasonably strongly. The force goes to zero as you approach infinite separation, so the potential energy is at a maximum at infinity. Any closer than infinity means a decrease in energy. Practically speaking, "pretty far apart" is effectively zero, but you can never increase the potential energy of two magnets by bringing their opposite poles closer together. (Their like poles are at a maximum when touching.) Blargh, I missed an earlier comment, so part of this didn't make sense in context. In short, yes, magnetic fields extend infinitely far into space, in exactly the same way that gravitational or electric fields do.
Congratulations, this feels like an actual Beakman episode, the acting, the angles and shots, the SFX, the animations, even the script and humor. Thanks for such a nostalgia trip

1st - I'm having a blast from the past, and this is not even in the languange I was used to watch beakman (brazilian here). Thank you so much you guys. 2nd - The only thing missing from that nearly perfect video is an intro with two penguins watching tv on the north pole.
Mr. Desilush, You probably won’t ever read this it thank you so much for every little detail you put into making this video, it was edited with all the quips, sounds, music, segments, quirks, tone, feeling and visualization of the original show. Simply outstanding
1) Bill Ny is an actor, he was never a scientist. 2) Given his recent SJW turn and propagating of bullshit, I doubt CD would want to have anything to do with Bill Nye now...
@@CrystalMarieShannon you’re so incredibly welcome. Also, how did you manage to get this bizarre gig? It’s unlike anything he’s ever done and it’s so strange he hasn’t done more of this included you. By far my favorite video of his. Your chemistry is worthy of more.
Right in my childhood..... Beakman got old....want to hug that man and thank him for making me love science Programs like that doesnt exist anymore....
@Edward Starski I was going to quip about you having this backwards, but obviously the truth is that you have a much deeper misconception. Statements like what you just made are exactly why the likes of Beakman's World still ought to exist. Unravelling the tapestry of misunderstanding, preconceived notions, and deliberate ignorance takes more than just well explained facts.
A friend and I tried to make a perpetual motion machine for an elementary school science fair. It's the sort of idea that sounds possible to your lizard brain, but doesn't hold up when you know anything about physics.
@5:00 Actually, over a long enough span of time, the spinning wheel will grind down to a halt, having radiated its energy as gravitational waves. It would take a very, very, very long time, mind you. Edit: Actually, a spinning wheel does not radiate gravitational waves unless it is non-homogeneous. Quoting WIkipedia: "In general terms, gravitational waves are radiated by objects whose motion involves acceleration and its change, provided that the motion is not perfectly spherically symmetric (like an expanding or contracting sphere) or rotationally symmetric (like a spinning disk or sphere). A simple example of this principle is a spinning dumbbell. If the dumbbell spins around its axis of symmetry, it will not radiate gravitational waves; if it tumbles end over end, as in the case of two planets orbiting each other, it will radiate gravitational waves." A spoked bicycle wheel would radiate, but a disc wheel wouldn't.
Not only that. Entropy would cause the material in the wheel to gradually evaporate. Also stray materials moving through space and inconsistencies between the various tiny gravitational forces moving through the universe will cause to stop over a very long time span.
Also, space isn't QUITE empty. There are trace amounts of matter, mainly hydrogen, so there would be a nearly-zero-but-not-quite-zero amount of friction. Like you said, though, it would still take a VERY long time to slow down.
I agree, Captain should be among the most subscribed channels on YT. I've been on a 2 day binge of this channel (since I discovered it yesterday). I've never been so addicted to a channel before.
Wait.. In the first episode with Holly, we see CD as a baby, and he's fully chrome. And this episode shows us that the peach colored part is just a mask. Then.. What in the heck is the black division, canonically? (that signifies the bleedover of reality and fiction) Is it paint, is it a scar?
I have watched this video countless times and every single time it puts a smile on my face. When Captain Disillusion says that "This man instilled a love for science on million of kids" is true. If by any chance Paul Zaloom reads my comment I would like to thank him because he made me get interested in science, be curious and do "experiments" at a young age. Thank you so very much sir! Best wishes from a true fan of your show from El Salvador! =D
Beakman's World was the show that first piqued my interest in science and understanding the world around me. I even wrote in to the show, because that was something that you could do. I would not be the person I am today if it were not for Beakman; He truly had that large of an impact on 10 year-old me.
tons of big-ish youtube comments with hundreds of likes on each comment on this video. Like, have I just been ignoring the comment section for the past few months?
Well, it's been four years and I think it's all crystal clear to us now: this exact video was peak RUclips. We're in the long tail and these golden days are never returning.
I was twelve years old when Beakman's World came out, and I was instantly a fan. Paul Zaloom is awesome. I was sad to learn that Mark Ritts (Lester) passed away in 2009.
That girl is a professional actor no? No idea who she is or what's Beakman's World, but she's doing that hyper-excited sidekick thing way too well, you rarely see that sorta thing in RUclips productions, even professionally made ones.
Sayntavian You weren't missing out. Beakman was and is superior to Bill Nye. He is the reason why I love science so much and, why as an adult, I pursued a career in science.
Beakman's World came on Saturday mornings. It was usually the final show, before the end of Saturday Cartoons. I do remember Beakman, predating Bill Nye (also, an amazing show) but not by much. Maybe a year or two. Both shows filled the love of science in kids, in the quirkiest way possible. I truly have and always will be a fan of Beakman's World. I wish something could be done, to bring it back.
I had no expectations of ever seeing Paul Zaloom play Beakman again- so this was an incredible (and touching) surprise! His voice sounds very different to me now, but he's still got it. Thank you for making this episode happen!!❤
I can't describe the feelings this man bring to me. Thank you, Captain. My captain! Than you even more, Beakman. A whole generation of brazilian scientists only exists because of you!
Beakman taught me to both to love science and be skeptic of common knowledge without experimentation and reproduction. Thanks to him I believe I am a much more informed and critically thinking adult, even though I am not a hard science scientist (Bachelors in Literature and Linguistics). He also taught me to trust in science at the same time I am skeptic of it, to always understand that science marches on but that I should always keep an watchful eye for those who want to tarnish the good name of science for their own agenda. Beakman, Brazil is, right now, in a very dark period filled with misinformation and a hatred of science... but those who fight this perception are most likely those who grew up watching your marvelous show. Our condolences for Mark Ritts. It looked like you two were a great duo.
I discovered this channel a last week and while I was watching through your videos I thought to myself, "This guy reminds me of that science guy with the weird hair and green lab coat that I used to watch as a kid." I couldn't remember Beekman's name, I was like eight years old. Then this video came up and I couldn't believe it! That's him! Love your videos Captain! I don't know how it took me so long to find you!

And props to Cap D for the level of accuracy in recreating the look and feel of an actual Beakman's World episode from the random sound effects, to Ray's appearance. The only way this could have been better would have been to have Lester in the episode too. RIP Lester (Mark Ritts)
I tried looking her up. None of her other stuff was nearly as engaging. My research was inconclusive though. I don't know how to rate an actress (no objective metrics available to me and I'm too lazy to figure that out properly). However, it did confirm that I didn't make this opinion based on the fact that she is gorgeous (and my/everyone's type). However, with this method I've been able to spot semi-big actors in commercials before their rise to mediocre fame (i.e., that cute little Cucci girl in I think an ATT commercial is my best one yet). I'm weird I know.
Hahaha, one of my friends had a lot of their electricity stolen by a shitty neighbour... Definitely cost quite a lot xD But hey, those dodgy crackheads must've felt like they'd found a free energy outlet, for sure, hahaha.

(Their like poles are at a maximum when touching.)
Blargh, I missed an earlier comment, so part of this didn't make sense in context.

Yep a penguin intro/outro would have been the cherry on top of the nostalgic cake.
I was just debunking the belief that all penguins are named Steve because those guys were called Don and Herb! 🤣🤣🤣
Damn they should have ended the video with the penguins.

Also stray materials moving through space and inconsistencies between the various tiny gravitational forces moving through the universe will cause to stop over a very long time span.
why did you put an @

Beakman was the one we got in Australia... never heard of Bill Nye until the early 2010s internet memeage started.

I tried looking her up. None of her other stuff was nearly as engaging. My research was inconclusive though.
