Guy on internet: Makes visual effect CD: NO YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG, THAT'S SO MUCH HARDER THAN IT NEEDS TO BE Also CD: Rotoscopes himself in the same scene behind shards of falling glass
@@bmorenelson9262 And that was the 'easiest to edit' part of this video. This guy probably struggles with cuts in Premiere while does special effects with After Effects in less than 5 minutes.
I just noticed that in the scene at 2:44, there's a guy behind the Captain who's actually doing the glass ball juggling. There's doing a brief Labarynth homage, and then there's also homaging the way the original movie did the same thing! (David Bowie couldn't juggle like that, it's a guy behind him stickin' his arm through).
I didn't know this bit of trivia, but it makes sense how the waving of the arm always felt suspect to me, like it felt disjointed from the body as it wasn't at all reflecting the inertial changes or whatever.
Very nice catch and shows how slight of hand works. We perceive wide views, but our focus is actually a tiny point that makes everything outside it less obvious. I don't think our brains could handle it if our eyes did focus clearly on everything we see.
Captain Disillusion is on another level. Recently edited and posted my first video and wow I severely underestimated how long even the simplest of edits take. I can't imagine how long his videos take to edit, especially with the perfect time he has. Master of the craft!
Some guy: spends a whole lot of time and work to make some pretty nice VFX shots. It's insane how much work CD puts into these, seriously, there's nothing quite like it.

He also added flashing lights to his face from the left and the right when the bulbs exploded. Edit: This is the top of the cake. These two effects can be seen only for 2-3 video frames. Pause the video when he comes up from behind the table and use "," and "." to step frame-by-frame. Watch the lightbulbs exploding and the light changing on his hair and face at the same time. You also see it in little details like complimenting the sound quality while "debunking" the video. Not a lot of people remember that sort of thing when they're all caught up in their grand new script but dude's a decent person first and foremost and I appreciate that, it shows.
Your thoroughness and attention to detail is truly beyond normal human capacity. It's like watching you take apart a crime scene and recreating the events in real time. Great Video.
I appreciate how, in order to show the "unedited" takes, Captain had to edit the edited takes so the edit looks like the unedited take, giving us a double-edited re-edit de-edit using different editing techniques to reverse the original editing techniques used in the original edit. You could even re-analyze his analysis to determine how he re-edits the edits to de-edit them! For example, in order to show the dropped watch in "real time," Captain possibly had to take the edited footage, manually matted the pocket watch from the slowed video and re-time it with the full-speed background to digitally replicate the original footage from before it was digitally altered, possibly even doing it frame-by-frame. Of course, the table was still in sync relative to the watch, so it was still home-free. Not to mention all the times Captain has to edit out the backgrounds of things, including the similar-coloured shirt to the pocket watch, which still couldn't be lumi-keyed. The value in these videos is more than just the masterful analysis, there is also the masterful re-edit de-editing that he has to do each time to expose the hidden secrets! Such a shame CD doesn't get all the hits. I absolutely loved the Flight of the Navigator video. It was timed perfectly to share with my family as well, but I guess I should assume they didn't watch it, from his view count haha.
It's a pretty long video with less humour, so I get why people didn't watch it so much. In fact, I only watched it once myself 😅 Maybe I should do it again in a while
That subtle rotoscoping flex at 11:32, entering the frame himself before the locket finishes animating. The explosion of the bulbs even lit him up while he was there!
@@JD.Knight ?? that doesn’t matter. What matters is the original black background, it was an easy luminance key, the glass shards in his face is more impressive
I would just like to reassure Alan the Unpaid Intern that his Flight of The Navigator video was completely epic. This is why he doesn't earn the big bucks.
after seeing your appearence on vfx artists react, I've been binging your whole channel. I can't believe I've never seen it before, this is exactly the stuff I love watching, you're amazing! writing a funny and script, showing how videos are made while also doing your own vfx on top of that, and *also* having genuine educational moments? what you're doing is so cool! watching you has made me really miss messing around in after-effects also not to be thirsty but the captain is kinda hot ngl
The poduction value in your videos is always really good but I feel with this video you added extra spice. I like the bit with the glass hitting your face. .... that sounds weird when I put it into words
It's not even the spice that blows my mind, it's that they went through and fabricated all of the pre-VFX shots by working backwards from the final video. I didn't even notice at first, until I clicked halfway through that they wouldn't have had access to any of those raw shots. They were all fabricated just to make it look like a regular behind-the-scenes VFX breakdown...
I actually saw the "Flight of the Navigator" video before this one. All 41 minutes and 21 seconds of it. You really did put your heart into it (loved how you went to the locations and saw the actual spaceship painted over). You're doing great Captain keep it up!
+1, the ”Flight of the Navigator" video is very good, it was incredibly interesting to watch a BTS of the film that I - not only did not watch, but even never _heard_ of - and still I was engaged for entire 45mins of it. And I was left a very warm feeling for people dedicated to their job for so much (CD being such a person, too).
God this channel is so unbelievably underrated. The quality all across the board is so good. I wish content like this would see the success it deserves.
the fact that you can recreate the original "raw" image with 3D modeling and simulation is so insanely impressive to me. You are a huge inspiration to me, thank you for making these amazing videos.

Pretty close to perfect which is why I'm kinda confused he didn't play the segments in normal speed before explaining each of them. I've never seen the original video and it was hard to follow at times.
I've spent most of the afternoon watching these explainers. Massive attention to detail. There are lots of little gem gags in there for the observant. These films must take ages to make. Respect!
Every time I see your videos I take the "behind the scenes" scenes for granted, but then I'm like wait a sec, he doesn't have the actual footage, he “reversed” the editing. Really impressive stuff.
Captain D does a lot of research and actually attempts to contact original creators to see if they're willing to help educate on certain topics. MacroRoom seems to be really chill and likes Captain D's content, so it's definitely possible he just handed the unedited footage to Captain D to use as reference material (maybe even helping his explanation too).
@@BetaDude40 I keep rewatching those parts of the video to try and figure out if that's the case and it's hard to tell. There'd have to be a lot of cloning but captain's very good at that so it's hard to say for sure. The scene with the normal speed stopwatch falling seems like it has some rotoscoping artefacts but then again it would be surprisingly hard to reverse the speed ramping on the original stopwatch to make the fall look natural without the original footage. I reckon you're probably right
@@BetaDude40IDK, he also did the same reverse editing for the superhuman tape measuring video. I think he actually painstakingly restored the footage to a close approximation of the raw footage.
It should be mentioned: When Alan works in frame-by-frame mode to check his hunches on these analysis videos, his wit really shines: The embedded gags fly by, keeping this viewer smiling at the side jokes. Also, this playfully acerbic humor is quite unique to CD, and reminds me of an Eastern European sense of humor - a tinge of sad and angry, but always in good fun. Thanks for the work on this!
@@OptimusGPrime thats actually a common misconception. While CD isn't of this earth, he is from space Latvia, it's a pretty similar country culture wise, but in space
Now we need a “making of” this video. Some skill required to UN-ROTOSCOPE something like this. Oh Captain, you deserve so much more than the algorithm is giving you!
Gotta admit his VFX skills are the closest to perfect one can get. Having the eyes from old-school VFX and knowing what to look for makes it that much better. I hope he's commissioning his VFX skills to other creators, he'd make bank.
aww, poor Alan. That edition of VFXcool does deserve props (as well as the Back to the Future vids). Hopefully it's getting shown in film school courses where that content can be seriously appreciated - quality over quantity of views.
The Veritasium "Why are Balloons?" got me good. The level of joke depth and editing work for these videos always baffles me - great video as always! Looking forward to the next one in 4-6 months
my dumbass wanted to know about balloons and searched baloons at veritasium, as i didn't find the video, i went back to see the thumbnail and saw the 23 years ago, i'm ashamed i didn't look at the details in a video that understands and deconstructs through watching the details
There are so many incredible details and jokes in every single frame that I'm going to end up rewatching this dozens and dozens of times. Absolutely astonishing work!
Alan, I have to be honest, I wasn’t interested in the Flight of the Navigator vido when I first saw it in my recommended, but when I finally got around to watching it, I absolutely loved it. It reminded me to the VFXcool series you did about Back to the Future. So don’t let the numbers dupe you into believing that some videos are better or worse. It also may have to do with the fact that the videos you compared it to have been up for at least a year, and therefore have more time to garner views. I don’t know, I just know that you’re amazing and that these videos are criminally underrated even today. Keep going just as strong. We love ya.
My god, the work you put into these videos. Not a lot of people can appreciate the hours that went into the undoing of the done work, but by god, I do.
Holy crap, 2.2 million subs. I remember watching the last video and I’m sure it was at something as criminally low as 350k. I’ve been watching this mad genius for years, it’s about time he got this very well deserved recognition! Keep going Cap!
The Captain has been at 2 million since around July 2020, and I think he's been over 1 million since October 2018 or so. But he still needs more, I say! To infinity and beyond!
@@StraveTube Think I’m getting my channels mixed up! Either that or my memory is terrible. Either way, this guy has earned his place in RUclips legendary history.
I absolutely love the Big D energy move of putting yourself into someone else's video and being more convincing than the objects they put in their own clip. Such a (pana)flex.
The way Captain Disillusion inserts himself in the video while explaining it is the real magic. And of course, the main reason these videos takes so long to complete, but the result is fenomenal! You're incredible Captain D!
If it's any consolation, watching your Flight of the Navigator video on a whim is what got me seriously interested in your channel. I've been binging your videos for the past couple hours because of it!
Captain D is one of the best things RUclips has to offer. The flight of the navigator video doing poorly is criminal! As someone who hardly ever comments, I’ve gotta say... MOAR ENGAGEMENT!
I agree, it was that video that blew me away, as a fan of both Flight of the navigator and special effects in general. The production values, attention to detail, humour and talent impressed me so much that I had to check out his other videos, and after bingeing through them with joy I honestly can't believe that the channel isn't bigger.
@@creamysmooth79 As someone who has never heard of the movie before that video and who does have a slight fondness of special effects because of a love for horror movies but never thinks much about it, I have to still agree that that video blew me away as well. I was so overwhelmed that I had to pause the video to do something else and come back later that day to watch the rest. I am never left feeling disillusioned by the disillusions, but only more amazed at the craftsmanship and creativity of people to make the impossible seem possible, not to mention the craftsmanship and creativity of the Captain himself.
I come away from your videos feeling like you put more work into them than I did my entire life and you'll title it like "lol this is just a quick throwaway vid nbd"
Huh, worlds colliding. I just finished binge watching your entire Witness series and I'm now onto Ori and Hollow Knight, and here you are. Love your stuff and you got a new sub from me.
The fact that you do things like 10:46 where you edited the video to play out as it naturally would have before being edited for the original upload, only for a whole ~1.5 second shot... You are seriously one of the most impressive and dedicated producers on this website. Every video you make is such a joy and your immense effort does not go unnoticed.
Was just thinking about that lol, it comes off so seamlessly how he edits in the original process, that I didn't even think about it until the Jenga but, nearly like he has the original footage himself and it happens so many times but it's his reconstruction, crazy
What stuns me everytime, is you always put in the extra effort, and more than the original video you're debunking had. Writing, story, pacing, effects. The whole package.
The real "playing with time" is how you manage to explain the making of these videos so quickly and effortlessly! Meanwhile you basically have to reverse-engineer and reconstruct how they were made using only the end product, with no access to the original source material, which I imagine would require more work than actually making the videos in the first place.
I enjoy the meta gag that is creating a breakdown video themed around playing with time, making it longer than most of your regular break down videos, and then allocating it to the Quick D series. Nice one!
I think I've gotten past being disillusioned when these effects are explained to me and now I can appreciate how much effort it must've taken to plan and edit these shots to make them look convincing enough to people who're probably not planning on examining the video close enough to find its flaws.
Massive respect captain D!

Every time I see your videos I take the "behind the scenes" scenes for granted, but then I'm like wait a sec, he doesn't have the actual footage, he “reversed” the editing. Really impressive stuff.
right?? we need a behind the scenes of his behind the scenes! how did he replace the sprinkles bottle with an empty sprinkles bottle
The part where he shows simulated sprinkles?? Well he simulated them himself. For a half second shot he barely even mentions
@@BetaDude40IDK, he also did the same reverse editing for the superhuman tape measuring video. I think he actually painstakingly restored the footage to a close approximation of the raw footage.

I agree, it was that video that blew me away, as a fan of both Flight of the navigator and special effects in general. @@creamysmooth79 As someone who has never heard of the movie before that video and who does have a slight fondness of special effects because of a love for horror movies but never thinks much about it, I have to still agree that that video blew me away as well. Dude you're NEXT LEVEL seriously. Just the hero of our time
The breakdown of Flight of the Navigator was awesome, I loved the long format
Nice one!
That's absolutely hilarious, totally missed it.
I didn't even REALISE that. Nice!
"Take it up with Veritasium!" LOL

"Why are Ballons?"
"No."
Knocked it out of the ball park with this one. The amount of effort to make this breakdown is mindblowing.
Man this is the best channel in RUclips, Period.
I think I've gotten past being disillusioned when these effects are explained to me and now I can appreciate how much effort it must've taken to plan and edit these shots to make them look convincing enough to people who're probably not planning on examining the video close enough to find its flaws.
