Kevin O’Leary weighs in: Could Canada become the 51st US state?

  • "Shark Tank" star Kevin O’Leary joins us to weigh in on recent headlines, including Donald Trump’s tariff threats, the idea of a united global currency, U.S.-Canada relations, and whether Canada would ever consider becoming the 51st U.S. state.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Wednesday outlined a proposed energy alliance between Canada and the United States designed to unite the two countries as efforts to head off increasingly hostile threats from President-elect Donald Trump continue.
The proposal, which Ontario is calling “Fortress Am-Can,” is being pitched as a “renewed strategic alliance between Canada and America” aimed at achieving energy security and power economic growth for both countries.
The threat of economically damaging tariffs on Canadian goods is looming larger as U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration draws closer - and there is little Canada can do to fight back against the tools at Trump’s disposal.

That can work live and pay taxes only to the U.S.goverment. They all have Dual citizenship. That's why they can't be trusted in making decisions for what is best for Canada. Dual citizenship is very bad for Canada. You should only be aloud to have one citizenship. Them you are loyal to one country.only. like China Singapore Japan India and many more.

      "beloved Canada"?
As an Albertan I don't find Canada "beloved", nor I find joining the USA a bad idea. It all depends on what terms are offered to my province.
Canada is a confederation - we all live in specific provinces or territories so a lump-sum reference to "Canada" is meaningless. There are many parts of the confederation where people are tired and sick of Ottawa's socialist exploitation and finds the American values and ideals, as well as the American models of constitutionalism, democracy, political order and social norms, far more conducive to advancing their rights & interests.
Objectively speaking there is in fact much to be gained from joining the US. If we were to hold a referendum in my homeland Alberta, for example, many of my fellow countrymen would be happy to become a yankee state as the polls have long indicated.
You have every right to be proud of Canada just like another Canadian citizen has every right to yearn to become American.
The wholesale annexation of the entire Canada is not realistic but the "defection" of a certain provinces from Canada to the US is not an implausible proposition, especially considering that Canada's constitution permits provinces to seek secession through democratic referendum.

Canada has its history finding its roots from early days after leaving US to establish a new political state called Canada. The nation’s soul is built on the forefathers’ shoulders and this cannot be thrown overboard. Its culture and all its formation are what make Canada our native land, strong and free. Threatening Denmark, a NATO ally with severe sanctions and war if Denmark doesn't give up Greenland (they have a military base there already, what more do they need) or take over Panama if it doesn't give up it's canal... it wouldn't surprise me if the 25th Amendment isn't executed on Trump at some point.
Trump is talking like an imperialist. As the disease of fascist behavior progresses, we've seen it before, it plays out like Russia and Ukraine where might is right, justifying murdering one's neighbor to steal the land. We have to call it out for what it is well before it gets here.

Speak for yourself not for Alberta
As an Albertan I don't find joining the USA a bad idea.

In the event Alberta became the State of Alberta, we would have no problem retaining our exiting free health-care system, which our oil wealth is more than sufficient to sustain.
Do you know how Canada maintains its universal health care system across all provinces? By the strategy of "Robbing Peter to Pay Paul" - the federal government dishes out astronomical amounts of subsidies to poorer provinces to keep their healthcare system afloat. It all comes at the expense of the rich provinces - province such as Alberta.
Do you know how many billions Alberta is forced to pay into the Federal Equalization Payment Fund every year??? Alberta is literally the largest giver (and Quebec the largest receiver.) Our tax dollars are taken away from our coffer, including our health-care system, and turned by Ottawa into "gifts" to bribe the Francophones into staying in Canada. It's literally Day Light Robbery in action.
Why do we have to put up with such robbery??? What do we have to gain from such exploitation??? We are asked to give, give, and give... We receive nothing - absolutely nothing - from the Federal government, who milks us dry like a hapless cow to enrich the rest of you.
The US' federal system is far more laissez faire than Canada's - there is NO American equivalent of Federal Equalization Payment. Washington does NOT rob the rich states to subsidize the poor states to the same extent Ottawa does. It also interferes far less into the states' own affairs. We would be more left alone if we were an US state, which is exactly what we want.
We have the world's third largest oil reserve and 90% of our oil flows into the US. We are already richer than most of the American states. Here’s a little true story about Canada’s healthcare system. It speaks volumes about the gap between Canadian and American values. A number of years back, my son was in California for a week’s training at Apple. All the other course participants were Americans from different corners of that place. He was the only Canadian. One evening when they were all out on the town, the conversation turned to favourite TV shows. Breaking Bad seemed to be quite popular with the Americans. My quick witted son, joined in. “They made a Canadian version of this show. The teacher got sick, went to his doctor who sent him to the cancer specialist and got admitted for treatment. Eventually he got well and returned to his teaching job. The Canadian show didn’t do very well in Canada as it was boring”.
“Oh yeah, right” one of the Americans said, “you’ve got public healthcare”.
    True story.
But sad. To think a country with how many aircraft carrier battle groups can’t have a healthcare system that would prevent citizens from resorting to crime to fund treatment.

You cannot go the other way around. Look at Europe and Japan. Lots of population, but no landmass. Canada would be no better off than Puerto Rico that is an American colony. Have zero rights in the US politics/Congress and America takes all of their resources. No public healthcare and lots of corporate greed in the healthcare industry. Being a high income earner, I pay tons in taxes, but I am happy everyone gets to see a doctor and gets treatment whenever they need as everyone is born with the right to medical care with no strings attached. Hell, Trump could just refer to a united Canada and U.S.A. as... 'NORTH AMERICA'! But we should at least stay separate countries, even if in name only.

I remember, as a child, I used to hear the chants against the "Yankee invasion" in my native country as a threat to the livelihood in Latin America. They called Americans Imperialists. I wasn't old enough to understand the whole thing but not too young not to remember and kind of where they were coming from. Still, I never really saw that, even if I lived in the US for a few years... Until NOW. Now I can truly see what that meant. Thanks to Trump.

Canada does not, subsidize dairy, unlike the U.S., which does. Canadian dairy products are cheaper, the cattle are healthier and farmers earn ten times more. Moreover, U.S. milk is UHT, not fresh.

You draft your own Constitutions. You have Political Representation in the Federal Government of the United States. Your Vote matters. Both at a Federal and Local Level. You would become Richer nor poorer

This is also due to China. Because it cannot compete successfully with China, the only option is to shrink to North America and re industrialize, and before that, annex Canada, Mexico, etc to increase its strength. two elephants fight, the ants always suffer.😢

How is it people don’t understand what he is proposing? He is clearly saying an economic union not giving up sovereignty. Canada has so many challenges and economic union with US will make them relevant long term. Are they not looking around? Blows my mind. If people could set aside the whole “not being American” thing, the benefits would definitely outweigh any downsides. Teaming up could really open doors for both countries!
