  • As a lot of you know from following my Social Media, I am a big fan of Astrophotography (Photographing the stars at night via long exposure). I found a great spot in my travels and I thought I would shoot a video to show you all how I got about doing this so you can try it yourself!

      zam200864 I absolutely love this lens and this camera! I'm so glad this was helpful for you. In my winter wonderland video, it was all shot with the em10 and 17mm lens, check it out. And subscribe to my channel as I'll be putting out a lot more content with this camera.

      the main offender is lens stabilization. IBIS will make no difference, on or off.

      NiekkieNick yeah, same. It was something I learned not too long ago and by switching IS off, I noticed that my images are much sharper.

    That was very interesting thank you. Is there a lot of trial and error getting your camera pointing in the right direction? Don’t you use the EVF at all? I had my first attempt last week but struggled using the EVF because I couldn’t remove all the clutter. It was impossible to get rid of the bright focus assist box corners on the Panasonic I was using which made it so difficult to see the stars. Does everyone get the direction right by taking multiple pictures?

    • @MikeBabsBC
      @MikeBabsBC  6 лет назад

      Julian Porter that's pretty much what I do. Aim the camera in the rough direction and then fine tune the orientation by taking photos.

  • @mrsusan893
    @mrsusan893 6 лет назад

    Does your camera allow you to live view focus by zooming into a star and turning the focus ring until the star is sharp?

    • @VBC17
      @VBC17 6 лет назад

      Question everything yes, I use digital zoom in addition to focus peaking to set my focus. I didn't cover that here as it's fairly easy and straight forward to do if you camera has those features. However, not all cameras do, so I wanted to highlight a basic technique that anyone with pretty much any dslr type camera could employ to set their focus.

    Hi Mike great video i have the same camera how does it cope with the cold did you have to acclimatise it for aperiod first or did you just start taking photos when you got out the car thanks in advance

    • @MikeBabsBC
      @MikeBabsBC  6 лет назад

      hailacab ideally you would want to slowly acclimatize the camera to the cold to help prevent condensation on and in the camera as well as thermal shock. My camera had been in my truck all day so it was already cold to begin with. I think this camera has a - 10c rating (don't quote me on this) so I was within the design perameters. If my camera was warm, I would have tried to cool it down slowly by placing it outside lightly covered (like using a shirt, something that's not very insulated) or else you'd be waiting forever.

    Hi! I am using the same EM10 M2, but I am having such a hard time finding this "infinity focus"!! Using the focus ring or the lens, how can I find this feature? I would've loved to see you show us these settings, especially that one part. Thank you for this video!

      kije juiio thanks for subscribing! I'll be sure to post more e-m10 related material soon. Olympus recently released their 17mm F1.2 that would be a good option as well if you had a little more money to spend, however my next video will be on the Rokinon 7.5mm fisheye f3.5 and why it's my favourite Astrophotography lens. Stay tuned!

      I use the Rokinon 12 2.0 wide open on my E-M10 II and it is wonderful! I should note that the first copy of the lens was horrible but the second is perfect.

    Hi Mike, thank you for your video,.
    Can you repeat what you have done after you set your manual focus ring to infinity so that you achieve less noise?

    • @MikeBabsBC
      @MikeBabsBC  Год назад +1

      Hi! Noise mostly comes from ISO, so you want to keep your ISO as low as possible while still giving you an image that is bright enough. You'll have to experiment with your camera to see at what ISO the noise becomes too much for your liking. For some cameras, it can be as low as iso 800 or even lower. Good Luck 😊

  • @pdroid11

    Hey, thanks for the explaining your settings.
    But i dont know how to setup the lens to infinity. Can you explain that part please?

    • @MikeBabsBC
      @MikeBabsBC  6 лет назад

      You can only do it if you have a manual focus ring on your lens. If so, then set your camera to manual, rotate the focus ring to infinity, then rate back a bit. Take a picture. it will be blurry, but keep moving the focus ring back in small increments and you will start seeing the image becoming sharp. once it is, you have et your focus properly and you can leave it for the rest of the shoot.

    • @MikeBabsBC
      @MikeBabsBC  6 лет назад

      I explain this in the video at 3:47

    • @salmanshami

      @@MikeBabsBC another option is to use your auto focus to aim for a bright star and then switch to manual focus.

    Thanks for the tutorial good info not to technical, can i make a suggestion re the video itself, i am hearing impaired and have serious trouble hearing you speak with the background music on as high as it was. Would it be possible to lower the volume of the back ground music so it is easier for deaf heads like me to hear.

    14-42mm isit possible to take like this??

    • @MikeBabsBC
      @MikeBabsBC  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, but ther are 2 things that will make using the 14-42mm ez lens more challenging. First, it's a slower lens so you will not get as bright a picture without leaving the shutter open longer and getting star trails. Second, it's an electronic focus lens, which means you physically can not set focus.

      @MikeBabsBC  6 лет назад +2

      Nadiia Chepurko sure is! That's what I started out with. Just remember to use Manual Focus and set the shutter speed longer to compensate for the smaller aperture.

    • @MikeBabsBC
      @MikeBabsBC  4 года назад +3

      With my 7.5Laowa I can get up to 35 seconds! Following the 500 rule (500 divided by the full-frame equivalent of the focal length of your lens = the number of seconds you can leave your shutter open without star trails.

  • @mcbrian
    @mcbrian 4 года назад

    Wow, so there's really no better way to get the focus other than trial and error one photo at a time? This is the most frustrating thing I've found doing long exposures with my OMD. No usable "boost" feature for live view to make it easy to get infinity focus, and no physical markers on the lens so you can manually set it beforehand.

    I had some success using another micro four thirds the Panasonic dmc-g80 see ruclips.net/video/djzzltU8NUE/видео.html There are quite a few comments on the web saying that the Panasonic sensor is inferior compared to the Olympus so I have picked up a body. Do you have any suggestions what tests I could use to compare the two cameras? I don’t need to keep both.

      I honestly have never used a Panasonic camera before so I can't say first hand. Check out the DP review message forums and see if you can find your answer there.
