New photographer here! While taking the trash out a bit ago I was admiring the moon and bemoaning the fact that I hadn’t been able to capture it adequately with my Olympus E-PL8, but after a quick google search let me to your excellent video, here I am 20 minutes later with some very decent photos of our friend Luna. Thanks a million sir!
Rob, I am so glad I found your RUclips tutorials. I was given a E-M10 ii as a gift a couple of years ago, but had only used it on full auto and didn't use it very much at that. Since finding your entries I have started really learning the camera and am really, really liking it. Your calm, clear presentation style and being able to see the view screen as you go through the settings is brilliant. Thanks again for all you are doing. I haven't watched them all yet but am working on it diligently.
Oh Mr Rob! I love you so much! This is such a fabulous tutorial! I had such a hissy fit last night trying to photograph the moon...so I will watch this again later and try again tonight. You really are a fabulous teacher! Thank you SO much!
Thanks for taking the time to show a simple moon shots. I am EM-1mark II shooter and your videos transfer well to the entire Olympus platform. Your videos are very simple and down to earth and helpful to people who have been shooting for years or the novice shooters. Keep the videos coming!
I just took a moon photo tonight as what you taught in the video, use the same lens, 40-150 f4-5.6 with em10 mkii. Satisfy with the photo. Many thanks Rob.
Co-incidentally I was out trying a few moon shots last night [with poor results]. And then this was shared to a FB user group on the subject. Perfect timing! Thanks so much!
Thanks Rob for your work and dedication. Without your tutorials i wouldnt take control on my M10 and i can learn about it. Greetings from Madrid , Spain!
Wow! Rob! This is just an excellent tutorial. For Oly fans, tutorials don't get better than this. I have actually told people about your channel; you never disappoint. Thanks so much. There's a full moon tomorrow night so it's perfectly timed. ;)
Thanks, I‘ll try it ! I never even tried to take a photo of the moon with my gear (E-M 1 Mk. 1 and E-M 5 Mk. 1) because i thought, this would save me from frustration. But now I will try it. Thanks a lot, Rob! You help me to become a better photographer. 😘 Excuse my English please, I‘m from Germany.
Yes, you are an amazing teacher for this camera. I just keep learning something new each time I watch one of your videos! thank you Rob. I will be trying this the next full moon.
Thanks Rob, for another great video. We have a full moon this weekend and I wanted to practice beforehand, and it worked! As a beginner, success is such a good feeling!
Thank you very very much for these instructions. I just took a photo of the moon with my Mark III and I am superbly impressed. A lunar eclipse is just starting off and I am super excited.
Hi Rob, just want to say a huge thank you for your time and effort in producing these videos. I have only had my camera a week but have learnt so much from you. I really appreciate your knowledge and the way you explain everything you do. Thanks again :-)
@@RobTrek I had a Lumi FZ82 which can take pics of the moon clearly as the zoom is 1200mm, however it was not fulfilling me to take my 'own' photos. I never thought the Olympus would be able to capture the moon with the zoom I have, this tutorial has given me that confidence. I love your walk about videos as well :-) I cant wait to actually go out and start taking proper photos now!
Rob, as always a great tutorial. When every I watch your videos I know my OMD 10 Mark ii is a capable camera. Thank you for your creativity and mentoring on this Camera system.
Dear Rob greetings from Greece !!! I really love all of your videos. Thanks for all the tutorials for Olympus Omd Em10 mkIi. I recently bought this camera and your videos were very helpfull understanding it. Thanks again, plz keep on going giving us tips and advises and really looking forward for your next upload.
Thanks so much for the video. Used the settings and tips here to get me started on photographing the super blood moon last night. Happy with the results I got from the 14-150 kit.
Great tips, as alway - please keep going! Thanks to your series I am starting to enjoy the EM10 and taking some half-decent pictures. BTW I tried shooting the moon a couple of days ago with very mixed results - now I know where I was going wrong :) - thanks.
nice tutorial Rob. I usually prefer P mode to shoot the moon handheld, leave the aperture to the max of the 14-150mm ii lens f5.6. Doing tests with A mode from f5.6 to f8 didn't notice any change in sharpness (E-M10 v1). I leave a 2s delay too, so I can hold the camera with two hands and not add any shaking while pressing the shutter button. Also tried adding the TCON-17x using a 55-58mm step-up ring and that worked out pretty well
Thank you for the tutorial. Supermoon was out this evening and I wasn’t able to take a decent shot since I’m still new with m43. I came from aps-c canon and I am still figuring out how olympus works. 👍🏻👌🏻
Your videos are an invaluable source of constant information, I just recently started taking photo's of the moon and your video is brilliant!! Thank you Rob! :)
Woke up early and saw a clear bright moon and thought, why not take a picture. All mine were blurred white. So I thought, bet Rob has done a moon upload. Found this one and much better, I can see details now. Nothing like your shot but I know with a bit more messing around and not doing it through double glazing I would get better shots. Hard with a prime lens.
I have an opportunity to follow your excellent tutorial, my difference is that I am useing an adapted 300mm prime lens, that should be fun on focusing. Thanks for your great video.
Hi Rob, Thanks for this tutorial. I got wonderful shots of the moon last night. Would love to share those with you but don't know how. Thanks for creating such great tutorials.
Love it. Great, simple, perfect tutorail (as usual). I really mean that. Only issue is doing manual focus or auto-focus? Some people suggest manual focus but than focus is really tricky as the moon is too bright. It is important to dim the screen light and maybe use a red filter to adjust the eyes to the darkness....
This is a really helpful and informative tutorial, and not just for us E-M10 ii owners. I achieved some gorgeous moon shots on my first attempt. Hand-held too. I wonder if you could also offer some guidance on photographing lightning. Or perhaps you already did and I missed it...
Thanks! No, haven't done lightning before. Kinda hard to coordinate my free time with weather like that. Maybe I can simulate it, I'll give some thought!
Awesome! Thank you very much Rob! You helped me to decide 👍 I just bought the 75-300, pretty impressed by the image quality, and was the focal lens i was missing on my bag 😄 Cheers!
yeah! Still, we can't forget that its a 600mm equivalent, so...its quality is still pretty impressive for that focal length 😁 I have te 40-150 f2.8 pro, but sometimes it feels "short", and i dont have the teleconverter. So, this 75-300 sounded like a really nice deal 👌
Very interesting about backing off max zoom for peak sharpness. I have those lenses so will have to test. I’m guessing not the case for pro lens I shoot bulk of my 12-40 shots at 40.
Just a best practice for me. Based on the charts I've seen on various lenses including dxomark.com. I know it's definitely true on my 150-600mm tamron. It gets really soft at 600mm.
Hi Rob! I've been watching your tutorials and getting better as I go. With that being said, instead of resetting the camera, could I set up these options and set this to myset 2? I hope I am asking this correctly. Reason being I am such a novice that I am afraid that I won't remember the settings we did in the first video for A mode without going back and re-watching (which I should do anyway). Thanks! Trish
Absolutely! I simply reset for tutorials so we can all be on the same page. The menus are like a rubics cube! Get one side right then the other side gets messed up.
@@RobTrek Thanks! I can't even begin to thank you for all of these tutorials. I love taking pictures, but I have SO much to learn. You are making it happen!!!
At the risk of sounding dumb and certainly going off at a tangent here - I'd love to see a short video on cleaning and care for the Olympus E-M10-II Rob.
I'm no good at cleaning. My cameras are so dirty! For the body, I use a keyboard vacuum, q-tips, and soft toothbrush to clean with some rubbing alcohol. Lenses are delicate and should only use q-tips, distilled water.
Hi Rob. A wonderful video, yet again. So concisely and well explained. I have recently watched many of your great videos and I must say you've re-ignited my enthusiasm in getting out there and take photos. Can't wait for a clear night sky now to have a go at some moon photos! Is it better to use exposure compensation rather than shutter speed to get the correct exposure?
Thanks. Check out the Narrowband Channel. Ben is really responsive to comments on his videos. He also uses Olympus. ruclips.net/user/TheNarrowbandChannelfeatured
Awesome video! I’ve been thinking of starting to take a few shots of the moon over the last few nights. Have you ever considered making a video about photographing the stars? I’ve been making quite a few attempts at it lately, and have been getting some decent results. Not sure what area you’re in, but if there’s any possibility of seeing what you’d be able to capture of the Milky Way or even just the night sky in a hopefully not so light polluted area, that would be awesome! Thank you so much for making your videos. You’ve helped me get familiar with my camera way better and faster than I would have on my own
Hi. I live in a very light polluted area. However, I do get out to the Shenandoah Mountains. Timing good weather and my free time is tricky. But I will make a video next time I get out there. Thanks!
Good advice, as ever! Hmm, hmm - I'm really considering to buy this 75-300 mm lens. Very affordable, very compact, and it would be usable for landscape too. Maybe even better buying this one first, before I go for the 12-40 Pro (I already have primes in this range, while 300mm would be something I not even have as an old SLR lens to attach to my Pen F Digital). This is where MFT shines (there's a reason that I no longer invest in the Sony A7 system, where I never found a native lens with the right price point).
I've been photographing the full moon over and over again for years. I get the best results in manual mode. I don't think fixating on A-mode is the best method in this case.
hi Rob, thanks for another great tutorial! Can I ask a quick q please... would these settings be ok with the internal teleconverter switched on ( 40-150 becoming 80-300???) Cheers for any help!
Great video !!! By far you have the best step by step instructional videos that I have seen. I learn something new about my OM-D M10 MarkII every time I view your videos. I did ask a question yesterday eve regarding EP 49 "All settings explained". Hopefully I did it properly as I clicked on Ep 49 and posed my question. Being retired and new to this whole computer thing, I hope I posed my question in the proper fashion. If I need to post my question in a different manner, just let me know. Also, I can repost my question if need be if for some reason it did not get posted properly. I noticed in your last video, that you have a nice looking accessory grip on you OM-D M10 MarkII. As I have big hands a nice ergonomic sized grip would be nice. Which one do you use ? Keep up the great videos, as I think yours are way better than the ones found on the Olympus Page.
Hi. I answered your previous question just now. The exact grip I have is no longer available, but here is a similar one: amzn.to/2yuWS7c with the arca swiss mount, or this one which has not arca swiss but has a nicer look: amzn.to/2yw6pel
Hi: thanks for responding. I've got the Fotodiox one but the depth dimension still seems to be a bit small fro my big hands. Although, its a big improvement over no grip at all. The depth dimension on this grip does appear to be greater: See robs first link. The depth dimension is: 2.9" according to Oben's web site. Thanks again
Hey Rob, Thanks for the great effort that you put into making your videos. I would like to know your thoughts and or opinion, on gimbals and if you have any tips. Thanks
I have one of the original zhiyun crane gimbals. It's great! A bit heavy to walk around for any length of time - say 30mins or more in my case. Haven't tried the non motorized gimbals, but they seem to work well. I like the ones that use the weights as feet so it doubles as a mini tripod/monopod.
Rob, correct if I'm wrong, I do believe that you would be the only person on youtube that goes into great depth about the Olympus. Thanks. I had hit a low spot and by coming across your tuts has inspired to move forward.
Hello Rob, I need your experience ... I must update my em10, I can not even em1 Mark II ... my options are: em1, em5 mark ii and em10 mark iii ... I make 99% photos and shoot a lot against the light ... the s / 4000 of the em10 fall short. thanks for your videos, greetings from Chile
I'd go with the em5 mark ii if you prefer the fully articulating screen. The em1 mark i if you prefer the flip screen. Both cameras will give you great image quality.
hi rob! I have a quick question about focal lenght hope you can help me out. Do you think a prime lens of 400mm (800mm crop factor applied) is too much for moon shot?
I just use manual mode and adjust shutter speed until the histogram looks good. Seems to be a lot less guessing that way. I suspect you needed less compensation on long lens because the spot metering picked up less of the surrounding dark area.
Hi Rob enjoyed this tutorial again. I have the same camera m10 mkII, but I noticed you can get -4 stops on your ev, I can only get 3 max either way. Has there been a change in the firmware or is there another setting I'm missing. Any help would be great.
@@RobTrek I did find this on the Olympus site "Still photo ±5 EV, movie ±3 EV, with selectable EV adjustment steps (1/3, 1/2, 1) HDR Shooting, monitor and EVF displays only up to ±3 EV." Just trying to find a setting that I may have missed
@@RobTrek ok I have got an answer from the OMD Education Group on FB. I had my dial function set on Flash Compensation instead of Exposure Compensation. So all sorted now. Thanks for your time, very much appreciated.
I followed your steps to shoot the full moon last night -- thank you! A question about one of the settings: anti-shock. Is it okay to leave the camera set on that all the time?
Price update: The Olympus 40-150mm now costs 199 USD and the 75-300mm costs 549 USD. The prices were the same until a few days ago and I missed this opportunity to get one (or both) of these. That's a little upsetting, but hey... let's hope that they will be offering another deal on these or other MFT lenses soon...☺
Another great video! We tried to capture the stars tonight’s as the sky was clear and they were very bright. We used both the 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 R and the 14-42mm f3.5 - 5.6 IIR kit lens and we couldn’t get one picture to take w the OM-D 10 Mark ii. Any suggestions for settings?
It really depends on where you are in terms of light pollution. Settings are greatly affected by this when shooting stars. For the 14-42, try setting 14mm, f/3.5, iso 3200, 20 seconds. Then add or subtract iso until your histogram is more to the right. Then you need to go into post processing and pull back the blacks. Astrophotography is not hard, but requires a lot of calculations and post processing. I'm practicing myself and will do a tutorial once I easily can repeat my results in various conditions with minimal settings like in this moon shot tutorial.
Rob Trek Struggled to get any clean shots but I believe it’s because I needed to adjust my ISO. I was able to at least get a few shots but nothing was clear. Thanks again for the help
Shooting the moon without a tripod with a 300(600mm)! I would at least anchor against a wall or a tree...Amazing results nevertheless...Thanks for the pointers.
Maybe mother nature will be kind to us, its been 19 years, east coast it starts 9:36pm Sun. until 1:50am . with a duration of totality of 1 hour 2 mins.
Two reasons. 1) To create a baseline for viewers in terms of settings so that we are on the same page and can exactly duplicate results. 2) Sometimes settings buried deep in the menu disable other settings I might need and it's too hard to remember which settings affect other settings or where the settings are. So if I reset, I can systematically change settings and develop muscle memory for the things I do most.

I wonder what the exposure would be if we were on the moon?
Another good tutorial Rob, I have an em5 mark 2 but the omd em1 mark 2 seems awesome, but think it would be a lot heavier.
Actually doesn't feel much heavier because it's easier to hold with the larger grip.
@@RobTrek Ha! Thanks Rob :)
Thanks. It really depends what mode you're in. Exposure comp makes more sense "P" mode. Still need to be careful. Just take a few test shots and see.
thank you very much rob !
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video! Any tips on shooting the galaxy/milky way? :)
Thanks. Check out the Narrowband Channel. Ben is really responsive to comments on his videos. He also uses Olympus. ruclips.net/user/TheNarrowbandChannelfeatured
Hi Rob, thank you for another very informative video - how about a follow-up on astrophotography?
Will do. Have to coordinate my schedule with a clear night. I have to drive about 3 hours to a place where there is less light pollution.
Thanks!
Great. Thanks
Welcome 😊
Thanks Rob.... Helpful..
Thanks for watching!
Very good video!! Thanx
Thank you for watching!
Thanks. Yes, get the 75-300 over the 12-40 pro. I'm just about to post a review of the 12-40 pro.
I've been photographing the full moon over and over again for years. I get the best results in manual mode. I don't think fixating on A-mode is the best method in this case.
Manual mode is best!
Thank you soo much 🤗
Thanks for watching!
Thank you, i will try next time im wake at night.
Your welcome!
hi Rob, thanks for another great tutorial! Can I ask a quick q please... would these settings be ok with the internal teleconverter switched on ( 40-150 becoming 80-300???) Cheers for any help!
Settings would be the same. Just note that you won't gain image quality, just a cropped image.
@@RobTrek thanks for the great, speedy, info Rob!
Hello, this is very helpful. By "mild processing" what exactly are you doing?
I just added a little sharpening and adjusted contrast.
@@RobTrek got it thank you
Great video !!!
Thanks so much for answering my questions. Again, great informative videos and keep up the good work !!!!!!!
Thanks. There is another guy that does more work with the EM1 Mark II. ruclips.net/channel/UCHg1eHVqxh0mY7iApQfGDGA
Thank you! Cant wait until next full moon to try it with my OM-D E-M10 MK III, I think it is capable! Just me with the mark III here?
I forgot it! And with my 40-150R...
It will work great!
I should also mention the em1 mark i has a much better grip.
Hello from Thailand :)
Could you please show how milky way photography with em10mkii?
Next time I head out for some astro photography, I'll give it a try.
@@RobTrek thanks 👍🏻
As always great, and very informative Rob.
Thank you!
hi rob! I have a quick question about focal lenght hope you can help me out. Do you think a prime lens of 400mm (800mm crop factor applied) is too much for moon shot?
That would be awesome! You'll need an extremely stable tripod and it's hard to track the moon, but you should get the shot!
I just use manual mode and adjust shutter speed until the histogram looks good. Seems to be a lot less guessing that way. I suspect you needed less compensation on long lens because the spot metering picked up less of the surrounding dark area.
That works too!
Hi Rob enjoyed this tutorial again. I have the same camera m10 mkII, but I noticed you can get -4 stops on your ev, I can only get 3 max either way. Has there been a change in the firmware or is there another setting I'm missing. Any help would be great.
Hi. The only thing I can think of is you can't do more than +/- 3ev in HDR mode. Let me know if that was it. -Rob
@@RobTrek no, same EV limits of 3 stops whether in HDR or normal shooting mode.
@@RobTrek I did find this on the Olympus site
"Still photo ±5 EV, movie ±3 EV, with selectable EV adjustment steps (1/3, 1/2, 1)
HDR Shooting, monitor and EVF displays only up to ±3 EV."
Just trying to find a setting that I may have missed
@@RobTrek ok I have got an answer from the OMD Education Group on FB. I had my dial function set on Flash Compensation instead of Exposure Compensation. So all sorted now. Thanks for your time, very much appreciated.
I followed your steps to shoot the full moon last night -- thank you! A question about one of the settings: anti-shock. Is it okay to leave the camera set on that all the time?
Yes, I leave it in anti-shock always.
@@RobTrek Thanks!
Price update:
The Olympus 40-150mm now costs 199 USD and the 75-300mm costs 549 USD.
The prices were the same until a few days ago and I missed this opportunity to get one (or both) of these. That's a little upsetting, but hey... let's hope that they will be offering another deal on these or other MFT lenses soon...☺
I just saw the 40-150mm on Olympus's certified refurbished for $59! Sadly it sold out quick and is out of stock.
@@RobTrek Oh...where? Please share the store name so that I can keep an eye on it in the future.
Rob Trek Excellent we will try again tomorrow. We are in the country w little to no light pollution.
Let me know how that works out.
Rob Trek Struggled to get any clean shots but I believe it’s because I needed to adjust my ISO. I was able to at least get a few shots but nothing was clear. Thanks again for the help
@@johnhayes564 I assume you're on a tripod. Can you send me some of those pics? rob@robtrek.com
Shooting the moon without a tripod with a 300(600mm)! I would at least anchor against a wall or a tree...Amazing results nevertheless...Thanks for the pointers.
Thanks. Yes, a tripod would be best, but I was getting decent shutter speeds.
With the Blood Moon (Total Lunar Eclipse) coming in a few days, would you use the same settings? Thanks
I'll have to research this a bit. I actually don't do much astrophotography since good weather and my free time don't often coincide.
Maybe mother nature will be kind to us, its been 19 years, east coast it starts 9:36pm Sun. until 1:50am . with a duration of totality of 1 hour 2 mins.
Rob, just one question. Why do factory reset?
Two reasons. 1) To create a baseline for viewers in terms of settings so that we are on the same page and can exactly duplicate results. 2) Sometimes settings buried deep in the menu disable other settings I might need and it's too hard to remember which settings affect other settings or where the settings are. So if I reset, I can systematically change settings and develop muscle memory for the things I do most.
Does anyone know how to scale an image past 150 in lightroom?
