What did my Walk In Humidor Cost?

  • In this video I show what it cost me to build a Walk In Humidor in my home. This was a closet conversion so there were no walls to open up or any major structural work. My math in the video is a little off ($1250.00 minus 333.73 {Salvaged Lumber} = a total cost of $916.27). Post any questions in the comment section. Thanks for 1000 Subscribers! Please SUBSCRIBE.

    My math was not stated correct on the walls. Total cost was $1250.00 minus $333.73 (because I salvaged the lumber for the walls) = $916.27. This was my total cost with salvaged lumber walls.

      I think the only thing I would have done different is to lower the ceiling. It would have been easy and since humidity rises I think it would be easier to keep humid. If you make a huge collection of cigars then it might be a requirement /

    Awesome job on the humidor. Great cigars, I see. Some still with the box. The presentation of materials, design, and setup once that door opens is 8.8/10. If it had been double doors it would be my ideal home humidor.

    This is a great price for not only a walk in humidor, but for a humidor in general. I’ve seen some boxes that might be 18 in x 12 in for $300-$350
    Will definitely come back to this and your 9 parter when I get a place that I will be at for a good while.

    I know I'm a few years late to this party, but what a great idea and set up! Giving me ideas to convert a closet in my basement. This seems to beat the free standing 5,000 count humidors for a fraction of the price.
    You seem to be very handy. It would be quite easy to cut in an outlet inside your humidor and pull power from the outlet the extension cord is plugged into. Then you could eliminate the cord running under the door. I work part time as an electrician it just happened to catch my eye.
    Agin, great work! I'm jealous, my stack of tupper-dors looks foolish haha.

    • @studnickaaquatics80
      @studnickaaquatics80  6 лет назад +16

      I did a lot of research into this build before I started. American Red Cedar (ARC) has the same basic properties as Spanish Cedar (SC) except that it can be twice as aromatic. Typically the walk in is built with 100% SC. No other woods are present. They recommend using considerably less ARC for a build just for that reason. The only place I used ARC was the shelving, shelf brackets, trim, and floor. If I had used it on the walls and ceiling I think that it could have tainted the taste of the cigars. Using the small ratio that I used I have not noticed any taste differences. Thanks for the interest.

      StudnickaAquatics You proved that a person can use alternative material. I’m building a wall humidor our of Qtr Swn Sapeli and I’m using it for both the structure to have the appearance on the outside as well as on the inside. I have read a few custom humidor builders moving to Sapeli because it has great properties but won’t dis flavor the cigars. For your application due to space I think your materials are great. I’m sure you’re enjoying

    • @nflhistory
      @nflhistory 2 года назад

      @@studnickaaquatics80 not exactly true. SC has a high sap content which resists mold and bugs, but which also makes it far less aromatic and ultimately has less of an effect on your smokes. ARC, like you said, is twice as aromatic and will influence your cigars twice as much as a result. The aromas are also distinctly different.
      If you plan on doing any long-term aging, the cigars that you age out in the open with open boxes will end up tasting like arc. That is not a pleasing taste 8n rolled tobacco

    Honest question - Is the cedar actually needed? The cigars need humidity and temperature control. I've seen the online shops vids and they have huge walk-in humidors without any cedar used in construction. (I love the work you did, its awesome.)

    • @studnickaaquatics80
      @studnickaaquatics80  2 года назад +1

      You do not need the cedar. Three woods help to regulate temperature and humidity, Spanish cedar, American red cedar, and Honduran mahogany. No other types of wood should be used unless it is completely sealed. I have also been in cigar shops that do not have any types of wood in them. As long as you can regulate the proper temperature and humidity you will be fine. You obviously do not want any other odors or perfumes.

    • @ar007r

      @@studnickaaquatics80 regular cedar has too strong of an odor and doesnt actually hold the moisture properly. It can destroy cigars. People may say it doesnt matter but if your collection is worth $100+k and you want to store cigars for decades then it absolutely matters. Id rather line my walls with plastic than regular cedar.
