I agree with you that Aerith is probably alive in some world. Zack has showed us that whenever you make a choice, a new world is created where you made the alternative choice. And each time, a rainbow effect can be seen. When Cloud blocks Seph's attack, there is the rainbow effect too. So pretty sure he did create a world there where she lived. But what did Seph say was his plan? To merge worlds. So I think that when Aerith died, Seph merged the world like the or of the OG where Aerith died (and where Cloud said those lines after her death) and the world where he saved her. So you have a weird both-dead-alive-Aerith. The rest of the party is stuck in the world where she died whereas Cloud has seen both worlds and is somehow stuck between them too (like Aerith). At the end, Zack also says that as world unite, so too do they part. So at the end, the two worlds were merged, but then parted again. Leaving us with what we saw. And then Zack says: "But who's to say... they can't unite again?" which imo is foreshadowing to part 3.
I do love how cloud says “I promise to stop sephiroth.” (I do wonder if cloud was actually speaking to Aerith or if he was delusional) and then the game IMMEDIATELY says “yeahhh…not guaranteed.” What do you mean?!? lol But rebirth’s ending has been a very controversial moment. Part 3 has to bring it all together, I actually cannot think of a part 3 that has so much to not only live up to but to continue to the story. I do think there is legit critics of the ending combined with legit praise, but part 3 has to make it clear what happened. Did you think the ending was great because of the emotional moments? Or not? Any issues?
I think it was SUCH a complicated ending. I loved it and thought it was well done for the most part, but, a small part of me didn't thoroughly enjoy it because of the unknowns and uncertainties (and all the anxiety that comes with that feeling). I'm not sure if I'd say there are issues per say. I know there are some mega critics out there and that's fine and all, I just don't know if I'd full agree. There's just so much for us to learn in part 3, you know? I think the biggest feeling I got from the ending was just pure sadness. An overwhelming sadness.
That promise at the end is actually the one translation I absolutely dislike. In Japanese, they both simply say: "For sure?" - "For sure" to beating Sephiroth. Imo, putting a "promise" there is really misleading and goes against the theme song of "no promises to keep" too. Like, when I saw that ending and then the line about "No Promises Await at Journey's End" showed up I was like instant dooming because it seems like such a bad omen. But then you look at the interview of the devs where they said that Aerith's fate and duty as a Cetra is basically like a "promise" that she has to fulfill, then the ending line gets a whole other meaning where it's basically foreshadowing that there is a future where she is not bound by her duty as a Cetra and can finally be a "normal" person. Soo... I went from dooming to being really hopeful because of this line.
@ @ Have you ever heard of rhetorical conversation and questions? You don't have to "fact check" moments like this when people are just trying to enjoy the moments and play a game.

It's not Aerith, She quite literally states within the scene before in the forest, that only she can stop Sephiroth and Cloud should focus on himself.
