I love that straw technique; I know it from a palm tree I learned, and I almost never break it out. I've been meaning to come up with a rattle snake that uses it for the tail though. Anyways, if you happen to see this, much love brother, I've been watching for years.

And while looking at a few of the pictures, and thinking about making a costume I've considered making his head and legs a very light grey, so if you were just SUPER concerned with the contrast, although I think it's okay, you might try and make the outside of the head and legs a really light grey. It would show that it's white liquid that's inside his head a bit better (it really is white and you can occationally see it splashing out in game)
