Good information Tim. Thank you for that. That’s what a LOT of people need to understand about how their machine functions.

Yes and we need the manufacturer to provide information to the operator if not detailed in the operator manual. Stihl does, some do not.

Thanks for this information. I have a 261CM that starts OK, but after using it and especially after refuelling I just can't get it restarted without resting about 20 minutes. I have found if I treat it like it's flooded, clamping the throttle wide open while starting it, then it will start and run properly. There are half a dozen RUclips videos on how to re-tune the MTronic system but they all have different procedures, including your video. But now you have demonstrated the exact procedure for the 261CM which I have.

The owners manual for your saw execution should show the correct calibration process for your saw, unless you have updated the chip with firmware. I'm glad it worked for you....

I have a question, is calibration needed only when the saw is acting up? I have been told to let the saws idle for a few (20 seconds minimum) before you shut the saw off. I was under the impression that the saw is constantly measures the atmosphere and fuel air mixture and needs to reset reference for idle after cutting.

Mark I think as long as the saw is running correctly at idle and not lean on top end, leave it alone. But, If things don't check out on your run check calibration is important just as a manual carb adjustment is. Any saw and any operator needs to listen and watch for incorrect run signs and sounds.
The saws with M-Tronic and Auto Tune are constantly reading air, fuel ratio, rpm and temperature from what I understand but with any computer or chip function a baseline has to be set. Garbage in Garbage out as they say. So thus a calibration process to form a base line and or limit for idle and wide open throttle are calibrated in a process thats programed into it. I don't know if it's 20 seconds, 45-90 seconds or 3 to 5 minutes at 8-12k rpm. Ive heard all the above is what to do.
Stihl has it in the operators manual - Husqvarna has us guessing, its not written anywhere I can pinpoint at this time and all dealers and mechanics seem to be confused as I am... Operators are confused too. That's the largest opportunity for problems.

Could atmospheric pressure fluctuation on the fuel Cause part of the problem Tim . Thanks again

Yes Bill. The calibration seems to correct issues I’ve experienced. Vapor pressure and altitude are definite issues. Dirty airflow, restrictions also. Although they have compensating airflow systems.

I thought the calibration requires at least 30 seconds at Delta and then 30 seconds WOT for 3.0. and then you will hear the speed changing towards the end

Just followed the owners manual instructions on the MS362c because I didn’t have a manual on the MS261. But it worked.
