  • In this video, a basic strength calculation of the Eiffel tower is performed. To keep it simple, just the core-frame of the Eiffel-tower is analysed. The calculation is done quickly, dimensions are roughly estimated based on pictures from the internet.
The load is the weight of the Eiffel tower, which is 7.3 million kilograms. Most of the weight in the model in concentrated at the location of the three observation decks by using massive profiles overthere.
The conclusion of this video is that the construction is incredible strong. The factor of safety before yielding is estimated at 2 and for breaking: 6. This means that the weight of the material could be twice as high and the Eiffel tower would still not be deforming plastically but only elastically. This is estimated based on the used material: Iron. Steel could easilly be three times as strong. The shape of the Eiffel tower seems to be based on creating and adding strength to the construction.
