No offense but I honestly think you need therapy. You seem to jump from one novel idea to the next new novelty, with manic energy, in order to fill a void within yourself. Maybe I am wrong. I apologize if I am or if I am just projecting. But addressing the void first might be a good idea for your mental health.

My wife stopped me (literally) as I walked out my front door a couple of years ago, she said "We will never need money in this house that badly that I would see you in this state"! I handed my van keys in that morning, I phoned my workmate to explain he said, "If a job is affecting your health, it`s time to find a new one mate"!

My brother I had a similar experience with my bride. When they say to you, "you are an unhappy person and need to find something else to do" it really hit home and very hard. Fortunately I was able to leave and never look back or regret it either. Be well and safe peace to you and yours.

That's a really elegant way of saying that, you must be blessed in having your wife. My ex what have said it more like "Suck it up you pssy". Well not really, I wouldn't allow that kind of disrespect but she would think it. Which is why she is the ex.

Just did the same yesterday. I noticed in the past year that my mental, physical and emotional health were getting really bad. To the point that being miserable felt normal if that makes sense. Finally I said "To hell with the money. What good is money if I can't enjoy it?" I quit cold. Left the company last night and had the most peaceful drive home.

Learning to say "no" is one of the most difficult lessons we learn as humans, mostly due to FOMO. However, as finite beings, saying "yes" to everything due to FOMO causes us to miss out on the full joy of the things we really love. Forget FOMO. Embrace focus. Count your blessings. Enjoy life.

Life is about choices. Vintage Tool Shop was a beautiful creation and had a fantastic run. I even bought several sets of vintage carving tools from you for my own collection. But ultimately, you have to choose what is best for YOU. While the shop may close, we will always have the memories of receiving that rare plane, chisel, handsaw, or fine wood carving tool set in the post. So, while you move on, Ben, never doubt your choices. 😢😉

Your work alone inspired hundreds if not thousands of redones and luthier total builds that will be played on stages, garages and bedrooms passed down through the ages. Impressive too say the least. Do carry on with your life and call it all good. Thank you for the inspiration.

My brother you will be missed. You have to do what is best for you and yours and if that means moving on so be it. I personally was relieved to be able to move on from a company and position that, frankly, was draining. The bride said to me one morning over the table "you are not a happy person and you need to find something else to do". Like most of our gender, males, we don't seem to be able to look out far enough in our own spheres and observe the affect it has on those we care the most for. Fortunately, time was kind to me and was able to leave that situation and start fresh. Now a few years removed I am able to volunteer at a shop where we refurbish and sell all manner of tools. My special "itch" are the edged tools we receive. Things like vintage knifes, chisels, and planes. You and your shop have been an inspiration to me personally. Restoring a vintage tool to what it was new and selling it to someone to use again to create is so much fun. And it also allows me to inspire young people to learn to use their hands along with their minds. Be well and safe peace to you and yours.

Congrats on the move, have been banging on that this needed to happen for you for so long now, it will hurt short term but the long term return will be so much better for you.
Concerning though that you stated GGBO is shut in way for the museum, I think I speak for many when we say we began and continued to watch and support the channel because of your building content, Q&As etc and now the guitar draw and museum stuff has pushed a lot of us away because well, its just boring... That said, if youre truly closing doors on the GGBO also, then please consider handing the reins over to someone else to run the competition and allow something that bought so much of us together to live on.

Well you did say that you kind of fell into owning a vintage tool shop.
You had a hobby for tools and you often had to buy a bundle of tools to get the interesting one or two you really wanted - then sold the rest on eBay - next thing you know, you had a fully fledged side business. That then became a significant chunk of your waking hours.
At least now the tool obsession can become a hobby again.

Always take care of yourself. I'm in a similar boat. I know the business I work at is in play for a sale, and my decision is do I retire when we get sold or hang on a little longer. I'm so tired of corporate BS that I have decided to hang it up when I turn 56 in July. I'll probably start making bass pickups (not a new skill for me) or something else guitar related. Again, take care of yourself first and foremost.

Oh Holy Hell- I didn't even have a chance to buy anything😭 I knew it was coming, though, but the timing vs finances never seem to work in my favor. I wanted an egg beater hand drill, but every time I looked they were either too expensive for me at the time, or there weren't any at all. And of course, with my addiction to planes, I've always lusted after those.. and chisels.. and files...I'm going to regret missing out on getting at least a chisel or file, or anything, really. Anyway, I'll write more about this in the next letter, or maybe an email- I have a lot of thoughts I want to discuss or at least pass on to the one person I know who shares my love for the tools our great- great grandparents used.
I do commend you for finally accepting your own limitations, and taking the realistic leap and prioritizing between what you must do, want to do, can do, and should do. It's about time, my friend. God Bless you, Ben, and Farewell, VTS.

You have to choose your projects wisely - you can't do them all. Over time we accumulate people, projects, and things in our lives. Occasionally, simplification is called for. What to leave in - what to leave out. Otherwise, you spread yourself too thin and accomplish nothing.

I don't know why I thought of this, but reminds me of the line in Harry Potter: "It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends." As well there are different kinds of courage - the courage to fight, and the courage to let go. There's valor in both. You will always be an ambassador for vintage tools, and have widened awareness and love for them, and that is a very great thing indeed.

..you better get practicing mindfulness and realise that head space between the ears is fiction. Plans plans plans...thinking thinking thinking...good luck with all that moving when in reality you are eternal stillness, infinite and devine being. But that stuff between the ears keeps presenting itself as you and you keep misidentifying with it, and the pain of sadness, guilt, anxiety, and the arousal of frustration anger and the excitement beguiles you. When in truth, the pain and suffering of fears and desires are an alert to the misidentification with all those plans! At least you are getting a taste of surrender. Surrender with a Sigh of Relief is the cure to realising that you are not the plan! Being has nothing to do with plans. I am that I am...

Gosh dude I used to watch your vids for your joy of guitars. I know you are going through stuff but you gotta look at the positive of this. A giant mill stone from around your neck forever. A year from now you will be glad you dumped that business. You just need to extract as much as you can in terms of capital from your stock and roll it into something you love and move on.

You have to look after your mental health, your a great guy. I remember meeting you at birmingham guitar show, seeing you looking absolutely shattered on Nottingham motorway services. I thought you looked shattered as much as I would love to say hello and have a chat you looked like you just needed quiet, then you shocked me by coming and talking too me, you had no Idea that I was going through a divorce, and your taking the time to speak helped with my mental health, you may or may not belief same as me, but I'm praying for you as you move to the next season in your life, I hope I get a chance to talk to you in person again, but I am still grateful for the time on the services that day.

Life needs changes. Life is experience and you have only one life. Do what you want with it, but don't waste it against your will. You are the most important thing in life, otherwise you can't be anything to others.

I bought an amazing gouge from Vintage Tool Shop, very old, boxwood handle, I love it. Sad to see you bring it to an end.

People want everything for not much $$$. They can’t appreciate the time and talent involved in restoring tools for resale.

Sorry to see this go, I can see that you are gutted. But again you can only do so much and there are only so many hours in a day. Good luck with the new Crimson tools etc. I agree, you mental health should come first and I am sure you made the right call.

I understand the reasons, but it makes me sad. I was hoping to one day go to the UK and buy some pretty old tool in your store, but life is what it is. If you need to move on, move on.
