Don’t hate alola because alola is actually the third best region in my opinion.
Nihilego looking like Lillie is because of Lusamine's obsession with Nihilego, since Lusamine forcing Lillie to dress the way she does is a major part of Lillie's backstory. It's never explicitly stated, so it's a pretty good example of subtle visual storytelling. This is one of the many things USM did worse, since in USM Lusamine wasn't obsessed with Nihilego, so she had no reason to force Lillie to dress like one. In SM it actually served a purpose and tied things together, in USM it's like a bunch of loose threads laying around that don't connect to anything else.
1. Lillie was already dressing up like Nihilego even before Lusamine met Ultra Beasts 2. Doesn't explain Guzma, Gladion, and Lusamine looking Ultra Beasts
@@GireumRed My best guess is that the UBs were designed before that part of the story was decided, or maybe the devs just thought they were being clever without actually explaining themselves.
@Guto yes! the pokémon manga is such an underrated master piece atleast gen’s 1-4 were heart gold and soul silvers was a little boring same as Fire Red and Leaf Green but other than those two whatta trip
@@GireumRed Lusamine was studying Ultra Beasts years before you met her in the game. She even created a new species of artificial Pokemon specifically to counter them.
Lillie's arc is about becoming self-reliant. To escape Aether she needed to rely on Nebby. To save Nebby she needed to rely on you. To get to a ruin she needed to rely on Oliva. To ward off a Team Skull Grunt she needed you again. The Bridge Scene is her taking a step towards relying on herself more and other less. That's why the confrontation with her mother has HER confronting her. Sure, she still needs help; she isn't a trainer herself and doesn't set out to be one until the end, but she confronts her mother because that's HER arc. If only there was a real sequel.

I was actually thinking about your point on how Lillie is actually the main character of the story while we, the player, are tasked with doing the heavy lifting and thought "why can't the player be the fusion of Lillie and us?" We would take the place of Lillie in the story, and her being timid could explain why we are mute and our lack of expression in the cutscenes. We would escape from Lusamine and try to live a normal life that we always wanted completing island challenges and collecting Pokemon. Eventually, our past will catch up with us and that moment where Lillie shouts at her mom could be us, which would be the first time the player would actually speak in the story. It be a fun break and subversion of expectations with the usual trends in Pokemon storytelling, and could've possibly made the SM story better. Just a thought I guess.
It seems like people just want the story to be about them. I think that's mostly just because the older games were completely about the player and now Sun and Moon are not.
@@thabluetails well pokemon has always been a power fantasy game, where you defeat crime organisations, ecoterrorists trying to flood/desertify the world, or end the universe, but Sun and Moon actually introduces a more grounded realistic plot that explores their characters in new ways with the theme of abuse being central to many of the characters, while ironically being a much more wacky and otherwordly game with ultra beasts.

And have them stack up with further gimmicks that don't require Held Items? Heck no! Think you can beat a Dynamax Mega Rayquaza with Flying Tera Type boosting Dragon Ascent's STAB without losing at least 3 Pokémon in the team? Well, good luck.
I forgot that's the Grass Gym Leader's name. Gireum was right that Kalos Gym Leaders were forgettable. It angers me that the third version of X/Y got dumped in a garbage can in favor of... Sun and Moon.
@S W Since Gen VI, GameFreak neglected and rushed their games period. As for their upcoming BD/SP games and LA, I haven't seen more new trailers. Sun and Moon is honestly one of my all-time favorite Pokemon games. Yes, it has its problems. It was a little too hand-holdy, it went a little too hard on the cutscenes, and USUM was basically just glorified DLC. But it was the first pokemon game I ever played where I actually found myself CARING about the human characters. I don't care what anyone else says, Sun and Moon had good writing. It was simple writing, granted, but it was still good.
Very much agree. I think the ammount of time you actually spend with them doing mundane things with the characters is what allows them to shine. It's also the only pokemon game that gives characters to the pokemon themselves and you care about the boxart legendary.
I like following Pokémon as much as the next, but as a newer fan, can someone tell me why everyone is crazy about them in a civil way? (I don’t like people who think they’re better than me just because I’m not as familiar with certain mechanics)
@@lovelyprincesssarah I can't believe people are rude about you being new. That's a totally normal and fun way to be. I'm new to Zelda and it's been so fun getting to go back to old games. I think it just adds a lot of character to the world, and gives the collecting of pokemon more of a visible effect since you get to see them all the time and interact with them more. It's immersive.
Honistly Pokemon Sun and Moon were great I never got most of the complaints people had with it. The story doing most of the work having one of the best in the main series.
They weren't "great". Decent enough, sure, but that's it. It's good they tried new things with it though, I'll say that much. Ultra Beasts were unnecessary. Little replayability. Annoying hallways instead of actual exploration. Clearly rushed at the end ("oh yeah, I'm a captain... but I have no trial for you. Tee-hee!"). I don't know if it's GF or TPC not allotting enough budget, but it's been showing more and more. The devs either need more time or more people. Shame because you can feel good ideas in their works, but sadly always as "could have been"s.

To me, the story of this game should be the main selling point. It's an amazing story, although I do agree that we have way to many cutscenes, I enjoyed the plot twist we faced with Lusamine being the actual villain (even though it was predictable) and that Team Skull was almost like a sub-division on the Aether Foundation. This was the last good Pokémon game, specially because even though it's not perfect by any means, it's still a very enjoyable experience because the bad DO NOT overtake the good in this game (SWORD AND SHIELD TAKE FUCKING NOTES)
The story is a bit of a double edged sword in my opinion. When you’ve never done it before it’s amazing and probably the best in the series. When you’re replaying the game it’s a massive chore and really annoying because of all the cutscenes.
You do realise that these same many people are the ones who hated on BW and B2W2 and are the reason why we are getting crappy SwSh and SV. SV still has qol changes but f SwSh man. The quality had risen up again gen7
My only issue with gen 7 is the cutscenes being unskippable and the existence of the most annoying thing in existence, rotom dex But other than that I feel like they did everything right..I mean I would've been happier with more mega evolution instead of z-moves but it's whatever My main improvement I actually really love is hms no longer being a thing, this was the first time in the series that we got to have fully freed up teams and it was honestly a huge plus
Adore Gen 7 so much. I respect all the complaints people have but my subjective opinion is they are top tier Pokémon games. Love Gen 7 and the Alola region forever bro.
Same! i really liked it a lot, and I’ve been playing Pokémon since gen 2 lmao. i love the region, characters and features. Sure, it’s hand holdy but I really loved all the new Pokémon introduced and although z moves are kinda cheesy it’s not as awful as the cheap “dynamax” 😪

To be fair; that Teachy TV in FireRed and LeafGreen was kinda funny because it wasn't forcing you to do this for continuing the game, unlike the trainer-school in Alola, Festival Plaza in UsUm or the uninteresting, unnecessary dialogs (even more than in the Alola games) in SwSh. At least, that Teachy TV was optional whenever you want. 🤷🏻♂️
I hear a lot of complaints about the game babying you and having to get through a lot of stuff, instead of actually complaining about the content itself. To me it sounds like people want to skip everything instead of actually giving it a chance. Honestly I think the main problem here is that there should have been an option to skip these things and the things themselves aren't really the problem.

True but honestly as a kid I found FRLG so confusing like I forgot about Teachy TV and was so confused on where to go, what's more was that the old man teaches you how to catch Pokemon but I was still figuring out how he got to the PokeBalls in the bag. I was confused how to use HMs or what TMs and HMs were and the fact that there's something called a TM Case, the fact that your pokemon is sent to the PC after your party is full. While I don't want it to be super hand-holdy, FRLG was difficult for me to understand basic concepts in Pokemon. Am I the only one who was stuck for ages until realizing there's a Team Rocket Grunt in the Game Corner and/or Surf is in the Safari Zone?
people are saying sm is too handholdy when we have the teachy tv, multiple help menus, the help button, npcs that don’t do anything but talk about the help menu or teachy tv…it’s not immersive, and immersiveness is one of the best parts of sun and moon
I would absolutely love to have played as Lillie. I was invested in Sun/Moon's story, but so sorely disappointed at my blank-stared protagonist ruining the scenes by being useless and expressionless. If they wanted to focus more on story, they should've gone all in. [With a skip cutscene option, of course] Imagine that Lillie is basically the same character, but with a customizable appearance. She can be male or female, and the Lillie we know is just her canon appearance. It would've probably divided people even more to have a protagonist with a defined personality, but at least Game Freak would be trying new avenues for the series. Would be a way better idea for a one generation gimmick than Z-moves or Dynamax.
It was been amazing if You can play as lillie or Gladion. The Main character has defined personality and You are related with your mother Lusamine, Aether foundation... And You have tl growth, becoming strong with our Pokémon

@@kerrywien6775 I thought that alola had a lot of really great concepts and ideas. But at least to me it is really obvious that a lot of features were rushed and/or cut. I think if the game had maybe an extra year or two of development then it would’ve been a lot better
Sun and Moon (no, not USUM) are my favorite Pokémon game, no cap. It was great as a first play through. The characters were pretty likable IMO, it helped fix the overly easy nature of XY, it actually had the full dex in game, and Alola had some interesting differences to the usual gym challenges. Also, fuck the Rotom dex from USUM.
I literally just bought this game (moon) preowned, yesterday for 11$ cause if birthday GameStop discount and $5 coupon I didn’t know I had saved. I liked the map since I play this game in large bursts, meaning when I came back I needed a reminder of where I was supposed to go. But it would've been better to give us the option to turn it off or change it to a different program. Makes me wish they kept something like DevNav, it was one of the best features of ORAS.
FRLG did a great job in showing flashbacks of recent places we had been while DPPt had a journal that chronicles what we recently captured and where we had went.
@@zjzr08 those features don't tell me where I'm supposed to go next though, just where I've been before. So if I put down Pokemon Platinum for a month, picked it up, then looked at the journal, I wouldn't know where to go next unless I played the game several times.
@@kiwikarp9509 I guess this is where there may be differing opinions, where some players like not knowing where to go next, going to whenever they want to as long as the goal pushes forward (hence why some like going off-map and skip Gym order) Personally though, while old maps are big, they aren't too complicated, so I don't see the need for hints per se.
I remember when people really hated Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire when it came out, to me it seems like people just hate on everything new regardless of what it actually is.
@@kiwikarp9509 Yeh very true, that happends to me often not only in Pokémon, If I Need/ I want to stop playing the game for a few days, when I come back I forgot What I should do and I have to Cheack on YT. I think than SWSH found a nice soulution to the problem, If you open the menù It Tells you where you Need to go but It's NOT Always in your face.
24:12 I think tha gamefreak has forgotten what makes a videogame different from a film or movie... Its the interactivity, and the fact that YOU are the main character. I dont get why gamefreak is so adimate about having you be a side character to some other main character, its counter to what videogames, especially RPGs are about. What if the player's role here? Same as always, get all the pokemon and the badges, go through the game. But every other game there's more to it. Your role involves stopping an evil team, doing something bigger than just catching every pokemon.
I'd personally argue that it is rather common for RPGs/adventure games to have the protagonist/POV character to be a generic chosen one and a silent protagonist who acts as players mirror to the soul, with the party members and/or other major characters being the heart of the story. Super Paper Mario, Undertale/Deltarune, a good number of Shin Megami Tensei games, Majoras Mask (and Twilight Princess as well), Fire Emblem Three Houses and Fantasy Life are a few examples that come to my mind when it comes to games where the supporting characters are the real main characters and the player character is just in for the ride, and those are just tip of the iceberg. Sure, there are more active protagonists in RPGs who are actual characters w character arcs and such (the Trails and Tales of games come to mind), but they are actual characters rather than avatars the player projects into. Pokemon is a series where I feel having a protagonist being an actual character rather than a blank slate won't work, largely because how a big appeal of pokemon is immersion and kinda, US becoming part of the world.
@@dovevanity4252 The thing is in all of those other games, the player character actually *does* things that help the plot. Sure, the story comes largely from a lot of the other characters, and yeah that is part of what makes pokemon work, but my point is that gamefreak has gotten away from even that. Remember how the pokemon going crazy was just litterally a news headline that Leon took care of in SWSH? Its that sort of thing thats the problem with pokemon nowadays. It doesnt break the immersion to have the player actually have some agency in the story.
@@Jdudec367 somewhat. Lillie is the main protagonist, she still drives the plot forward. Its what she does that makes the climax happen. However, yes the player actually does have *some* agency in gen 7. Obviously, that is long gone by gen 8.
@@dovevanity4252 Not Shin Megami Tensei. Even though SMT has silent protagonists, it’s still ultimately the player’s story. SMT focuses all about the player’s choices and those choices ultimately decide whether you get a Law, Neutral or Chaotic ending. Your character drives the plot forward and the ending you get is based on your actions/choices so it feels earned.
I don't know about that I understand how you feel but pretty much every game with a silent protagonist works this way, I mean can you honestly say that games like BioShock Infinite or Half-Life 2 are truly about the character you're playing as. Sun and moon doesn't seem that much different.
How to fix these games: • Stop making one dimension characters and completely develop them giving them more than 3 appearance or text boxes • Lusamine and Guzma were the only rescuable thing for me but they felt incomplete. Just like almost any character in the main saga. Not telling everything and limiting to some text (last point) ruins your potential. • Imagine Lillie really taking example on your avatar and really growing strong, even helping you to fight in crucial situations like Lusamine or Nihilego. Imagine making a postgame where some years pass and she returns to the region after a journey to be an optional strong boss instead of fucking Red who did REALLY took you as THE example. Do you like real woman who became strong or... A crybaby who never grows up? Its funny because in the Spin off Mystery Dungeon Explorer of the Sky you also have a close character (your partner) who probably loves you and REALLY START BEING WEAK to be developed step by step INTO SOMEONE STRONG AND SMART taking example on the effort of YOUR AVATAR. The gap is noticeable. And it's a big loss because i would love to see a Lillie like that. • Imagine if Lillie and your avatar did REALLY start a relationship and for USUM the main character was other and she was Married after several years timeskip with your contrary gender avatar as... A fucking Elite 4 with her husband/wife being the champion. • Imagine if fucking USUM was a game where you as another NEW and not recycled avatar was a game where in pure Chrono Cross fashion (a PS1 game) you did explore 2 worlds: Homeworld where everything was right like your SM avatar did everything right and Alter World where everything went wrong and you have to fix the dark consequences (Example: Lusamine dead, your first avatar dead, ultra beast domination over people, Guzma not reforming etc etc) and avoid any chance of the Alter World fusing with Homeworld. But nope, better make half-done characters who could be good, make many fillers and you have another game. Given the fanbase's opinion on much spin offs and GEN5 back in the day it ends being understandable. I really would have liked a story like i did point above. Yikes... When fanon easily beats canon. And of course we didnt talk about the gameplay. Gen 1 and 2 are excused to have 1v1 like NES Dragon Quest 1 because of GB limitations. But we are not in the GB anymore. 2v2 or 3v3 should be the norm. Difficulty curve issues, and several other problems which are recurring in the series. Yikes.
I liked sun and Moon but I do agree that there quite a few flaws that the game has. I get what you mean by saying it feels incomplete but at the same time. Literally every other gen has this issue before the third version comes out (RS, DP) so with that logic everyone should hate every single first version. As for USUM it was a missed opportunity for GameFreak to do sequels again but I guess since BW2 sold so low they assumed the fans have spoken and have steered away from making more ambitious sequels. Perhaps that what XY were gonna get before they were scrapped altogether.
The way you describe this game's Sun & Monn's cutscenes reminds me all the time I had to spend watching door animations in Resident Evil Remake. Every god-forsaken door takes 7.75 seconds to pass through, and you can't skip the animation. There are so many doors that 1/3 of my playthrough was purely going through doors. Doors, doors, doors, doors, doors, doors, doors, doors, doors, doors, doors, doors, doors, doors, doors, doors, doors, doors. Doors, everywhere
So, not sure if this has been brought up yet but I guess I'll say it anyways. About the laziness of the Island Trials, I remember hearing a while ago (around the time the games came out) that gym leaders were originally planned for Sun and Moon, but near the end of development, Masuda (or someone else) came up with the idea of Island Trials and rushed to implement them into the games. Can't confirm how legitimate this is but it does explain why most of the trials are lazy. Not trying to defend the game, just thought this was something interesting to mention. :)
Tamia I don't think the island trials are that lazy, it looks like they put a lot of effort into each and every one, I hear a lot of people saying that they are lazy but I don't really hear why.
@@thabluetails they are lazy and insulting because in wela volcano trial you have to play spot the difference 3 times, each getting easier than the last until the final one which you can't answer wrong. Acerola trial you have to take a picture of 4 pokemon that appear right in front of you. Mina doesn't even battle you. Kahili appears out of no where, seems like the cut golf course attached to the hanu resort might have been a place for some type of trial involving her, but that's my personal speculation. It seems like there was a lot missing in these games. Pirate ship and golf course in akala bothers me so much.
@@hamsandwich6685 your problem seems to be that you wanted more of a challenge from the trials which is fine although I feel like people should be happy about the change of pace in the first place. The characters and character interactions are really fun and interesting which is what mattered to me, there is something that felt different with each trial.
@@thabluetails I don't find false option dialog to be fun. As in it insults me when no matter what you choose the outcome is the same. Most of the games acts like a movie that you read with very uninteresting dialog. I wanted more of a game out of the experience. I also thought there was so much more depth in the lore that could have been embellishments for the game if the player was able to explore those ideas, such as the pirate ship and golf course of akala. I loved sun and moon for the potential they have not what they really are because to me they really are less than half baked in the oven.
I honestly hate the excuse game freak uses of "kids are so much more easily distracted by their phones so we need to make the games easier and quicker for them to play cuz we're competing with their attention" like yeah I will say that is objectively true there are a lot more ways for kids to entertain themselves with more instant gratification than when I was a kid playing red blue yellow gold silver Crystal even the DS Sarah Diamond pearl and platinum they were less distractions and those games were the only ways for us to entertain ourselves on the go. However the most insulting thing and really shows you how burnt out and careless they are with Pokemon now is their reaction to that challenge they didn't go "oh wow kids have more distractions these days well we better make sure we make these games as engaging and fun as possible to keep their attention" they went wow we're going to have to work extra hard and be more creative to create a game to keep kids engaged? That's way too much effort let's just dumb down everything and cut as many corners as possible as long as we slap the Pokemon name on it it will sell who cares"
The original Pokémon sun and moon are the only Pokémon games cheaper than the retail price. These games were devalued by their ultra versions and lack of post game.
Mean while Black and White doesn't bother too much. X and Y a few handholding and lets you explore without a device (Rotom Dex) telling you to go back on the journey.
Yeah we need a Pokemon game that's not for kids, includes gore, has adult stuff, shit like that, right? You guys don't learn to respect stuff and then regret. Believe me, USUM will become the new B2W2 in a few years
@@peanutmuttplays104 well and PLA also did contain a bit PG problematic stuff. Like you take fall damage, Pokemon attack you directly, people can be killed, and the world is just more brutal and not child friendly. That's the closest one could get to a not safe for kids pokemon game
Which is why it's my favorite on the list of Pokemon games (Not including Arceus since I haven't played too deep into yet) I enjoyed the Ultra beasts, the return of the trainers from the old games, the stuff with Anabel and Looker, battle tree and recruiting trainers and how the trials had a different feel to it. Last game I played before that was black. I got mid way and I wasn't really feeling it so I abandoned it. Moon I put a hell of a lot of work In.
i’m playing these for the first time right now as a gen I skipped. two hours in it’s done itself zero favors, I wanna scream + rip my hair out because I have zero agency to do what I want
I Love alola, alola is one of the best regions in Pokémon, even though alola is a linear region, alola have 4 islands and there’s tons of optional areas in alola to explore and the new pokemons are amazing and badass, the ultra beasts are a cool concept of alien pokemons from other universes and the mascot legendaries are inspired by the big bang and represents the sun, moon and eclipse or creation of the universe is triggered by the big bang or the cosmos and the island guardians/tapus are cool legendaries, a yellow chicken, a pink butterfly, a red bull and a purple swordsfish/marlin fish that protects each island, alola isn’t the best region, but it’s certainly among the best regions and alola have many areas to explore in the postgame, alola have one of the best postgame areas/contents ever. Don’t hate alola because alola is actually the third best region in my opinion.
I still enjoy the games But gen 5 was definitely peak and then Pokémon started falling off. The games got easier even though they’re not supposed to be hard but I think pokemon will always work best on a 2D screen
All I remember vividly about gen 7 was that the first few hours of playing Pokémon moon were boring as hell and ruined the overall experience down the road of the game in my opinion.
Yet they included Mina only for some reason and made her younger, meaning that it would've been chronologically impossible for Lillie and Gladion to be in Kanto lol. Gen 7 is a goddamn mismanaged mess.
@@christianmckee2116I think Mina got focus in LGPE as an "apology" for giving her a bad first impression in SM with not giving her a trial (and she also was given one in USUM, albeit a fetch quest many didn't like)...that being said I agree Lille probably would be better and kinda tie in with her leaving from Alola.
When are we gonna start holding these multi million dollar companies to higher standards when it comes to story writing 💀 I understand it’s supposed to be a children’s game (despite the MAJORITY of its players being 19-25), but they just hand hold and completely treat the player like a baby. Even with these “deeper” plots going into somewhat more mature territory, they could absolutely push it a bit. Maybe add a bit better dialogue too that isn’t just “Hey there ___!! I am your rival!! Let’s catch em all!”
Rotom's blinking used to drive me INSANE. I played with a post it note on the bottom screen. I did like wearing sunglasses all the time so it looked like my character was high with her dopey smile in all circumstances
Moon was such a bore, don’t know why people overhype it so much. As for Pokemon Moon, it didn’t really grab me as much as previous games did and it’s a shame to hear Ultra doesn’t improve much if anything.
Pokemon Sun was my first ever core series pokemon game on my first ever Nintendo device, Nintendo 2ds, that my father bought from Canada. Being an Indian, we only get to watch Pokemon on TV we can't play TCG or the core series games (Pokemon Go is popular here, though). Therefore i have feelings attached to Pokemon Sun. I deleted my file that i completed in 2018 and restarted the game and completed it with my team having ash greninja, incineroar, a decidueye that i got as a rowlet from wonder trade, a mega Charizard x from wonder trade and solgaleo and zygarde. My favourite Pokemon will always be litten and his family because they were my first ever Pokemon and i was closely attached to them. Generation 7 Pokemon games have such awesome relaxing music especially in the pokemon centre and the post game credits really brought tears into my eyes. I still remember the day 5 years back when I first completed the game as a hardcore Indian Pokemon fan. I really don't take kindly to anyone who disrespects generation 7 games. Advances in gameplay that generation 7 did: The return of different overworld music depending on the time of day, which was originally introduced in Generation IV. A new villainous team, Team Skull. Eighteen Generation I Pokémon have a form unique to Alola known as a regional form; this aspect of Generation VII is based on selective pressures which occur in the real world. The addition of the Rotom Pokédex, a special Pokédex inhabited by a Rotom that doubles as a real-time map on the bottom screen of the Nintendo 3DS. The 3D models used for characters on the overworld are refined, and Trainers can be seen behind their Pokémon during battle, similar to Pokémon Colosseum, XD: Gale of Darkness, and Battle Revolution. Several NPC Trainers are shown to keep their Pokémon in Poké Balls other than the standard Poké Ball. It is possible to see stat changes during a battle. The new QR Scanner allows players to register Pokémon in their Pokédex and receive event Pokémon. The addition of Poké Rides, which allow players to summon Pokémon that they can ride to access otherwise inaccessible areas and thus the removal of HMs. The addition of Hyper Training, a system that allows players to exchange special Bottle Caps to maximize the IVs of their Level 100 Pokémon. Source: Bulbapedia It's also the only Pokemon game up until that point where the villainous team (team skull) weren't seeking the titular legendary for its world ending power. And also the first one where a character's family problems are shown in depth rather than just being obscure like N or silver. Let's appreciate generation 7 for how unique it was, it was peak Pokemon gameplay.
I remember the first time I beat moon I was on a car trip and didn't have a car charger, the battery was in the red just before I did the champion defense battle and the battery died during the credits
I loathed Sun and Moon primarily because I had tasted X and Y, which offered a tease of what the games could be like in 3D and what an older protagonist could look like in the universe... it felt so fresh and promising (apart from the story), but then Sun and Moon came along with five-year-old protagonists and far less customization than X and Y had already showed were possible. Didn't like the aesthetic or camera control compared to X and Y, either... and really hated the fact that the D-pad as a optional control device was dropped entirely... the 3DS sticks were okay, but nowhere near as good for accurate small movements as the D-pad. Also, in terms of memorability, that's pretty subjective - even though I spent longer in Sun/Moon than X/Y, I don't remember a single character... apart from the friend/rival (don't recall his name). I vaguely remember Team Skull, but I found them incredibly thematically annoying. Sure, Team Yell was worse, but the moment I saw the daggy, heads-lolling-to-the-side Skull members I facepalmed, and I don't recall a single Skull encounter where I wasn't desperate to skip through or past them. Sure, Mega Evolution was a pretty average idea, but that's why I rarely (if ever) used it... unlike in Sword/Shield, where you ABSOLUTELY had to use the gimmick. Z-moves were interesting, but to use them I would have to be playing Sun or Moon...
the designs of the gen 7 roster are also fantastic. Best starter designs in any pokemon gen, first and only truly successful pika clone in mimikyu, great designs that it's surprising never showed up before like anchor pokemon, sandcastle pokemon, water spider pokemon, school of fish pokemon, the early bug evolves into something really strong & cool, the regional variant concept is amazing with real gems like muk, legendary memes like exeggutor, and *finally* some love for raichu. And yeah, the ultra beasts are cool & weird as heck and actually feel threatening. Even the box legends were cool, and meaningfully worked into the game's narrative via Lillie & Nebby. And the sos mechanic was not only a compelling new shiny hunting method, it also implied life & ecology to wild pokemon apart from just existing to be caught by the player. The pokemon themselves have always been the most important part of the pokemon franchise, and sun & moon probably did the best job of any new gen games in this regard.
Gen 8 designs weren't terrible, there were some real gems here & there. The dragapult line are among the best pseudo-legendary designs ever, some of the Galarian forms are great, and I absolutely adore polteageist. But yeah, the overall average quality is a step down from gen 7 in creativity, vivacity, and charm.
Yeah it seems like the thing that is universally loved about these games are the Pokemon designs. I love almost all the Pokemon introduced in Sun and Moon, primarina 4 life.
23:40 So that sounds exactly like World of Warcraft. You do all the raids, dungeons, etc except your character isn't in ANY of the story cutscenes, while all the real main characters do stuff.
Why are the Kalos Gym Leaders so forgettable when many older gym leaders are still stuck in their gyms? Is it just nostalgia? If it does it doesnt explain Hoenn and Sinnoh ones. Nothing is more useless than the Rotom Dex map, in the overworld they just laid out everything, ruining the surprise, while in the few caves that it could be useful in, the map is unusable. Since the protagonists have to be as silent and generic as possible "because muh player stand in" how would you make them more expressive in cutscenes?
Making Lillie the playable character would make the game feel much more restricted than it already is since it wouldn’t make sense for her to casually run around catching all types of pokemon since she relies on using repels during the first portion of her character arc, doing that may be better for the story but it would ruin the gameplay I agree that it would’ve been cool to have a trainer battle with her but that would’ve made her feel too much like Wally and her character arc leads her to the point of wanting to start her journey as a pokemon trainer, so her having an OP team to fight against wouldn’t make much sense, although that would’ve been cool to see if Gamefreak decided to make sequels instead of alternate timeline games
I agree on most fronts here but I have to say I liked the Z-crytals you didn't get from the island trial. The psychium-Z being within the depths of a labrynth-esque desert makes it feel like a trial that was lost to time, or how you find the buginium-Z in Guzma's throne room hinting at his desire to be a trial captain
Pros: new Pokémon designs Very pretty art style Pulls away from the usual gym stuff Cons: way too much dialogue No opportunity for exploration Too much hand holding
Jokes on you I knew he was Ramos! Only because I roll in Pokémon Masters ex for shits and giggles and get annoyed whenever he shows up instead of who I actually want.
9:33 Except everybody spammed Z moves on strong mons such as Heatran, Tapu Koko, Kartana, Garchomp, etc. Only thing it did is buff those mons who were pretty strong to begin with
Honestly thank you for pointing out the issue with the story with Lily. When I played it I couldn't help feeling like I was just a glorified escort / bodyguard / battler for her because apparently her stupid morals won't let her battle Pokemon but she's more than happy to let me battle Pokemon for her when she needs help and protecting nebby oh oh yeah the legendary Pokemon who saves that Lily is the savior and best friend of the legendary box Pokemon not you the story is about Lily and her mom you are just there on the side. It didn't really feel like my Pokemon Journey it felt like I was just going through the emotions until she comes running to me screaming and crying for help. No I don't want to play an entire game where it's just one long escort Mission screw that
The Sun and Moon games were good, they could've been better, however the cheapest cash grab was USUM which just shows how the devs really care about the series as opposed to worshipping that of greed, itself. Also why i can't, in good conscience, buy into the series past Scarlet and Violet. I'm not even buying into their cut content trick that they've had the audacity to try again after a buggy pile, buggier than a termite mound.
z moves sound good at first glance until you realize how cringe they can be, legit the character does a random cringe tik-tok-dance and then suddenly your pokemon becomes a totem for the animation of 1 move. Not only that but protect completely ruins the z-move
Honestly with regards to Rideable Pokemon and the removal of HMs, I was in the "likes HMs" ballpark, especially how HG/SS actually had special animations for your following Pokemon using an HM, but at the same time I was upset with how they were required to take up a move slot. I was hoping that one day a Pokemon game would make it possible to register an HM move to a Pokemon without it taking up a move slot, acting only as a summonable field move. When I heard about the Rideable Pokemon I thought "Oh man, are they finally going to make the HMs visibly useable?" I figured that you'd be able to register your Pokemon to be able to bike, dowse, fly, surf, etc. Imagine my sadness when I discovered that, no, you're just given the ability to summon Pokemon that aren't yours to bike/dowse/whatever. That made me sad. Sure, I get to Surf on the back of a Lapras (again) or ride a Tauros, but they're not *my* Lapras or *my* Tauros. And there's lots of other non-gen-1 Pokemon I'd love to both train and ride on, like Milotic or Scolipede. Obviously they don't need to use all of the Pokemon available, but it would've been lovely if you were able to register some of your own Pokemon for Rideable status... This region has way too much feel of "You're a tourist" for me anyways, with the handholding and all. You're supposed to be living here, but I expected the end of the game to just have your mom come up and say that it's time to go back to Kanto and it's you leaving on the ship instead of Lillie.
All modern Pokemon games are just bad movies with a few minutes of walking gameplay. It's like a museum of cutscenes. (Like if the COD modern warfare museum level was an entire game)
Not gonna lie. Even if you are not a "poketuber" (whatever that is...), I do trust your judgement of the Pokemon games. I also appreciate your honesty when Game Freak did something right.
22:31 I agree that making the story about lillie was bad, but I strongly disagree with the idea that the player should have played the game as lillie (or a male version of lillie if they chose). In breath of the wild, the main character is link, not you. Link, a distinct character with specific personality traits, is the hero of the story and the game gives us the privilege of living out *his* story. But when I play a pokemon game, I don't want to play as link or lillie or gladion or red or anyone else. I want to play as me (or a character I made up). The pokemon games since the beginning have been about the player and their personal journey. You pick *your* team and go on *your* adventure. This is why so many of us pokemon fans are upset by linearity and lack of after story because since black and white, the games have been less and less about us and more about this bland, generic, "chosen one".
I think it was USUM that ultimately ruined gen 7. It exposed the problems with SM, USUM and the entire business practice of gamefreak, Pokémon company, creatures inc, Nintendo or whoever it was. I’m not gonna act like SM was perfect but it at least tried to be something (even tho it was purposely left unfinished).
HM's where never the problem. It was just very annoying you had to sacrifice a move slot for them, especially with the shitty moves like cut and flash. If a pokemon learns these moves once and then could use these moves in field, even after they forget them for battle, this would habe been the best solution. You use YOUR pokemon for exploration and don't need to sacrifice a move slot or have an HM slave in the team. Why did gamefreak not came up with this simple solution? Bc they are lazy af.
The critique with the story nails it. If you as the player are not the main protagonist the story id flawed and pointless. I'm advocating to make pokemon in an open world sandbox that could slightly open open up in the first half of the game but in the second half you should be able to tackle the gyms in any order you like. Getting rid of a overarching story would fix many problems, the to long cut scenes, the hand holding etc and could be replaced through little story fragments or quests you stumble upon by exploring the world. By this the focus would go back to you, the player, and your journey to become the champion.
I guess the reason why I don't mind the cutscenes is because I've played many other games that have them exactly like they were in Sun & Moon, especially with most past 3D Zelda games. Whole reason I didn't like USUM was because it just utterly fucked the entire Pokémon canon for me, more than what people said about Zinnia said in ORAS with the whole Mega Evolution timeline thing. It's a multiverse now, babyyyyyyy. Trainer Red can be a grown man AND a teenager at the same time
The story started off interesting, but ended mid and corny! Lusamine has to be in the top 3 worst antagonist in a Pokemon game, with one of the most underwhelming boss battle.
Your opinion seems like the general consensus here, a lot of people loved sun and moon when it came out that people expected Ultra sun and moon to be a lot different and when it wasn't people didn't like it. Theoretically this would mean that if you played Ultra Sun and Moon before playing The Originals you would love them. Honestly I would sort of be fine with this argument if it wasn't for the fact that Pokemon emerald and Crystal are barely different from their original games and people love them.
@@thabluetails honestly that's true. I mainly didn't it like for how the story plot was similar with little tweaks here and there. Bw2 plot was different then bw (as an example). I would've accepted usum if i played it first

I will tell you an anectode straight up from my Sun and Moon Experience. I was still defeating the league while a huge noise like a thunder was heard all around my neightborhood. That was, in reality, a landslide where I live, therefore, we had to evacuate all the buildings around the landslide to avoid the entire mountain crumbling to hit the adjacent buildings and start a domino effect. Well, we were ALL down the streets with the police and firemen around and if you were looking around you were looking a pretty desperate girl playing on her 3DS. Why? Because of the fucking cutscene and the fact that i was also low on battery. Like, goddammit Game Freak, 33 whole ass minutes of cutscene. (before i get laughed at because i was still playing, it wasnt a really dangerous situation, they did that pretty late, just in case, just to make sure what the risks were, thats why we evacuated without that big of a rush and being able to bring stuff with us)
Personally I liked USUM way more than sun and moon they made the game more wacky added difficulty and a bunch of quality of life features that weren't in the previous games, I just spent more time in USUM another positive being that shiny hunting is super streamlined in USUM with wormholes, masuda method, and adrenaline orbs.

I could easily remember Ramos’ name (not only without you telling me but also without me having to look it up)!
1. Lillie was already dressing up like Nihilego even before Lusamine met Ultra Beasts
2. Doesn't explain Guzma, Gladion, and Lusamine looking Ultra Beasts
@@GireumRed My best guess is that the UBs were designed before that part of the story was decided, or maybe the devs just thought they were being clever without actually explaining themselves.
@@GireumRed it is stated by Lilly “my mom always picks my clothes”

@@shpaghettishpaghetti6219 When you think about it more, thats all the player character has ever been, especially in these games
That's a bit too convoluted for a mainline pokemon game but I like the idea ; v ;
For once a game protagonist would have some Character Development.

Kerry Wien Okay parrot, we get it. And once we finish the tutorial game on how to play Pokemon, the game dies.
Let's Go's rideable pokemon and following pokemon should be in every game moving forward, buuuuuuuuuuuut....
I cannot agree hard enough.
@S W Breath of the Wild so far, but I've been playing through the 3ds remaster of Ocarina of Time and it's great.
I'd rather have HMs Back in the game than Following Pokemon. Allow me to use my Pokemon for getting by troubles than something that is just for Fluff.
Honistly Pokemon Sun and Moon were great I never got most of the complaints people had with it. The story doing most of the work having one of the best in the main series.
Honestly, the main problem I have with it, is that the replayability is low, With all the unskipable cutscenes and lack of side areas to explore.
@@ShinyGreninja14 yeah and the post game is nothing its a good game but it's a one and done
I liked them too but the first island is a bit of a hassle to get through. Other than that I didn't hate them.

At least FR/LG lets you play the damn game unlike S/M. Nearly all the NPC's can put a cork in it on negligible conversations.
I hear a lot of complaints about the game babying you and having to get through a lot of stuff, instead of actually complaining about the content itself. To me it sounds like people want to skip everything instead of actually giving it a chance.

@@kiwikarp9509 I guess this is where there may be differing opinions, where some players like not knowing where to go next, going to whenever they want to as long as the goal pushes forward (hence why some like going off-map and skip Gym order)

Him giving great points and arguments:
Me: 5 years?.....
How to fix these games:
• Stop making one dimension characters and completely develop them giving them more than 3 appearance or text boxes
• Lusamine and Guzma were the only rescuable thing for me but they felt incomplete.
Yikes.
The super lengthy un-skipable Cutscenes are an insult to Us! the 20 year experience veteran players!!
One thing I kinda like about this game is that you can use Zygarde on your team
It's kind of unfair to compare any new game to gen 5, lets be honest
How? Game Freak still has the resources to make games as good as gen 5, but they won't.

So at least Gen 4 or 3, but even then there's issues comparing those, still.

It doesn't sound like you're defending the game.

Mina doesn't even battle you.

Advances in gameplay that generation 7 did:
The return of different overworld music depending on the time of day, which was originally introduced in Generation IV.

It's also the only Pokemon game up until that point where the villainous team (team skull) weren't seeking the titular legendary for its world ending power. And also the first one where a character's family problems are shown in depth rather than just being obscure like N or silver. Let's appreciate generation 7 for how unique it was, it was peak Pokemon gameplay.
And this is why I'm worried about Legends ZA
Yeah i really loved the pokemon designs of gen 7 too. And that is why i was somewhat disappointed by gen8 designs.
I just hoped they got Horde Battles back though, I felt it could've been a staple format.
Yeah it seems like the thing that is universally loved about these games are the Pokemon designs. I love almost all the Pokemon introduced in Sun and Moon, primarina 4 life.
23:40
So that sounds exactly like World of Warcraft. You do all the raids, dungeons, etc except your character isn't in ANY of the story cutscenes, while all the real main characters do stuff.
17:12 Actually the exact reason I dropped the game. Game wouldn't stop holding my hand and treating me like a 4-year-old...so I just dropped it.
Your loss.
Making Lillie the playable character would make the game feel much more restricted than it already is since it wouldn’t make sense for her to casually run around catching all types of pokemon since she relies on using repels during the first portion of her character arc, doing that may be better for the story but it would ruin the gameplay
I agree that it would’ve been cool to have a trainer battle with her but that would’ve made her feel too much like Wally and her character arc leads her to the point of wanting to start her journey as a pokemon trainer, so her having an OP team to fight against wouldn’t make much sense, although that would’ve been cool to see if Gamefreak decided to make sequels instead of alternate timeline games
Pros: new Pokémon designs
Very pretty art style
Pulls away from the usual gym stuff
Cons: way too much dialogue
No opportunity for exploration
Too much hand holding
Pokémon when they make a [ Skitty ] story: “It just works”
I absolutely loved Sun and Moon. The graphics were amazing and I think the new Pokemon were great!
Lol
They're not perfect but I found them enjoyable.
absolutely agree, some of my favorite in the series actually
My wife and I think Gen 7 is the best tbh. We love the anime and both played the games together
Jokes on you I knew he was Ramos! Only because I roll in Pokémon Masters ex for shits and giggles and get annoyed whenever he shows up instead of who I actually want.
At least Troublemaker 1 Ramos is solid, but getting constant 3☆ pulls after maxing 3☆ is sadly expectred hehe.
Lovely video and review. You're brilliant!
9:33 Except everybody spammed Z moves on strong mons such as Heatran, Tapu Koko, Kartana, Garchomp, etc. Only thing it did is buff those mons who were pretty strong to begin with
I'm not sure but I think I read somewhere that Lillie looks like that one ultra beast just because her mother wanted her to be like that ultra beast
She does
Subscribed, love the pokemon stuff you do
Honestly thank you for pointing out the issue with the story with Lily.
Dude u are so genuinely funny and I’ve missed that
All modern Pokemon games are just bad movies with a few minutes of walking gameplay.
It's like a museum of cutscenes. (Like if the COD modern warfare museum level was an entire game)
This video was hilarious, but very accurate. I share the same sentiments about sun and moon
21:55 like this one? LOL
@@justinsarcedo9355 soulless eyes, yes 😂
My favorite part about Sun and Moon is Lillie's relationship with the protagonist. ♥️
It's really wholesome and sweet.
◍^ ᴗ ^◍
Well, I guess that was fixed in BDSP with the Pokétch.
@@Night_Rider83 Don't know, I stopped playing pokemon in Gen 7.
Trainer Red can be a grown man AND a teenager at the same time
Bro had me questioning if the 4th gym leader was ramos
The story started off interesting, but ended mid and corny! Lusamine has to be in the top 3 worst antagonist in a Pokemon game, with one of the most underwhelming boss battle.
Nah that’s ghetsis he was pretty garbage
Ultra moon was my favorite pokemon game, its the one I got the most enjoyment out of
I agree
Same.
Sun and moon was a pretty decent game. Ultra sun and moon was just bad. I gave up before the elite four. There goes my money lol
@YASH SINGH it didn't gave anything new really. It was like playing the same game right until the end with a little change.
I would've accepted usum if i played it first
I Love alola, alola is one of the best regions in Pokémon, even though alola is a linear region, alola have 4 islands and there’s tons of optional areas in alola to explore and the new pokemons are amazing and badass, the ultra beasts are a cool concept of alien pokemons from other universes and the mascot legendaries are inspired by the big bang and represents the sun, moon and eclipse or creation of the universe is triggered by the big bang or the cosmos and the island guardians/tapus are cool legendaries, a yellow chicken, a pink butterfly, a red bull and a purple swordsfish/marlin fish that protects each island, alola isn’t the best region, but it’s certainly among the best regions and alola have many areas to explore in the postgame, alola have one of the best postgame areas/contents ever. Don’t hate alola because alola is actually the third best region in my opinion.
@@kerrywien6775 i didn't say i hate at all. I just said it was decent. Plus i was talking about the game than the pokemon itself
19:40 I died at how perfect that fit 🤣🤣🤣
I wish games let you discover and do things on your own
