Germany never really had one shared identity, we are bavarians, swabians, sorbs, etc.
If you go back in time we were teutons, hugenoten, saxons, etc.
The "german identity" was and still is a dream, an aspiration, something we still find only in some moments.
Soccer is the best example, if the german team plays against other national teams. We are german.
If the bundesliga is going on we are a cheering for the team from our region.
The "shared" part of our identity is very small, most of used to identify more strong with the region of germany we live in.
The most obvius reason is that national pride displays out of season(EM/Olympia/etc) were seen as a slideback to bad days, sadly today it is more accepteted again and I am deeply embarressed by it.
But a less obvious resons is that we are more rooted in our regional identity, because there are actually hugh differences between the regions.
P.S.: I know that this isn´t the perfect solution but it worked well for me:
German test: Do you have a german personalausweis?
Do you speak german or at least want to learn it in the futur?
Do you hate wasting time on the stupid pfandautomaten and ponder the state of german engineering while waiting?
If you can answer all of these questions with yes, congrats in my book you are as german as someone can be.
I know , I know not a sophisticated test but it worked pretty well for me.

Nice snippet and important discussion! In the Caribbean we also struggle with multicultural identity formation because everyone is so mixed. I'm from St. Martin. What's important is knowing where you come from and embracing what's shaping you now and melting all those beautiful components together.

Exactly. There is so much to gain in embracing who you are and your culture while enjoying those around you. There is many common grounds to unite on and that is important too. Thank you so much for contributing 🖤

really interesting, i've observed that it seems to vary depending on place a lot, but not heard others talk about that.
I really agree that group identity doesn't have to be limited to one thing, everyone is most likely part of multiple overlapping group identities but not necessarily aware of it.

In my experience it’s very difficult to break into the many country group identities. Next episode dives into that a little bit more.

As a white I would never think of „white community“ - when I would be abroad I only maybe would think of cultural or country community. I will never understand the reason of race community. It’s hard for me always to think whats somebody’s race is - it doesn’t come to my mind at all. I think this is often the reason the black communities are so separated from the „white community“ or more to say the „other“ people.
It’s a pity. I understand the need of get together because you think you are not the same or not accepted, but today it’s really a thing to divide. When you are not accepted or have problems, because you are not these same, so you have to get up like other persons they are not the „same“ because of other reasons like a woman or disabled ones, but don’t break it down of the colour of your skin.
And when you are thinking the „whites“ don’t like you (I am speaking in the case of Germany and Austria) - it’s not because you are black it’s because of your cultural behavior. A black from the UK or a black from the US will likely have no problem to be accepted, because of his cultural background, his mindset and social status.
Your thinking of race get me thinking y o u don’t like me as a white person and that hurts.
    Love from Austria 🇦🇹

Thanks for sharing. Have you considered maybe its not necessary for you to think of a "White community" because everything about your society is built around the comfort of people like you? We don't have a "Black community" in Ghana (where I am from) because the society is predominantly built for the comfort of Ghanaians. There is a German community in Ghana, complete with their own schools and hospitals. Ghanaians don't cry fowl about it. We let them be because it is what will make them comfortable in a foreign land. And I can tell you they don't integrate much with Ghanaians neither and they are all relatively wealthier than the local population. Again, we let them be. We don't scream "They are taking our jobs/resources. In fact we give them so much respect. In a way it may be our weakness as Africans, we are too welcoming.
So it baffles me why the "majority" can't understand why the minority communities in the West prefer to build some sort of community for themselves where they can feel a sense of belonging and unity. "it’s not because you are black it’s because of your cultural behavior." - We are not a monolith, Which specific culture do we ALL seem to have? I was raised in the UK and I still have issues with acceptance both in the UK and Germany. Not saying its terrible but I sometimes find myself in spaces where I know for sure I am not wanted (another story for another day). Thats why Black people feel like they are not afforded individualism, we are boxed in with every negative found in our community, funnily enough not the positives. White people usually don't get this treatment.
Please see race, acknowledge it because it affects the lives of real people everyday, yours too. But if its positive you will likely not notice it. Thats what privilege is about. Not everyone enjoys that privilege. And just so you know I have my own privileges, I have a British accent and passport I am a straight man and that offers me many opportunities others will not get in this society. I know it and there is no shame in accepting it.
So please recognise these things and then treat people of all races equally. That is the true super power.

@@ConvosXpodcastBecause as I mentioned above of the cultural background - but in your case it’s not true, you have the same mindset of living together peacefully and make the world better.
