What they don't tell you is that with the back disassembled the couch still weighs a lot; you'll need two very strong lifters. I've lifted many a couch but these suckers are too heavy for me to move. How do you split the base?

Yes, only backs can be removed. Bottom part, will have springs etc, you don't want to touch them even though it cab be dismantled as well
