Making a discus!

  • I decided to make a custom discus for my son, who is competing in track and field, where discus throwing is one event. A fun project but a bit more work than I first anticipated as you have to meet some specific parameters, like size and weight. I'm very happy with the result and it feels great to throw!

    - I had no idea how a discus was made.
    - Didn't know that I needed to to know this.
    - Watched the entire video to the very end, and was thoroughly fascinated.
    - Loved the fact that we got to see everyone throw it. Completely satisfying!

But one that she would know was hers & it would stand out from all the others. But maybe also make her a hollow football (to keep it light) on a wooden stand to be put up on her shelf in her bedroom too. These are the things that the kids will remember that their dad made for them... to be passed on down to the future generations... as they will stand the test of time forever.*

Precision woodturning is not one of my favourite things to do so well done on that weight readout, getting all the parameters to come together at once is not easy.
One of my favourite parts of woodturning is putting the finish on by hand, its just so satisfying.
You're a brave man trusting something else with your wood turning chisels, especially the grind on that lovely fingernail gouge. Skew chisels can have a mind of their own but are apparently indestructible Gouges on the other hand are seemingly magnetically drawn to the chuck, especially when turning plywoods. The grind on a turning gouge can be very complex.
I always wondered how discus throwers trained in the winter...its must be by blacksmithing ...I can see that discus getting a lot of air time over the summer.
thanks for sharing a great build and the events afterwards..
