As a professional glass blower and a hobbyist knifemaker who has contemplated making jacks for years this video is absolutely heaven sent. I have seen jacks made by other blacksmiths before and they usually approach it like they were making blacksmithing tools. Much more crude and meant to be operated by force. Jacks are a delicate precision tool and you made just that. Cudos!
Being a helper in local glassblowing workshops, I knew the end form of your creation. Watching you get to that end form was a joy to watch. Your craftsmanship and attention to detail are inspiring. Then, seeing the jacks being used was a delight. Thank you for sharing!
Hats off to that! As a glassblower myself, I have always admired the tool makers of the craft. The jacks you made look as good as any of the ones i have seen. The comment that glassblower made about how smooth your jacks are was a really good compliment. There was an Italian tool maker named Carlo Dona who made some of the most beautiful glass jacks and he polished the blades to a mirror finish. In doing that, the wax wouldn't stay on the blades and would often scratch the glass. Maybe you did your research or maybe you just lucked out, but leaving some texture on the blades is important. Make some diamond shears next : ) Very impressive work!
Super weird comment. Carlo Dona still makes tools, though Roberto is the man running the show now. If you ask them, they tell you to season your jacks and to take the shine off before use so that they hold wax and don't scratch the glass.
Another example of Torbjorne’s genius. I have a forge and move metal but nothing like this. Here is an example of his fine blacksmithing and engineering skills very few have. JC🌵
Torbjörn, you surely made lifetime-friends there, probable next step, you might receive orders for some more tools from the people at Bergdalahyttan, well done, mate.
I've got jacks made in England Germany Italy Canada America and Mexico. Would definitely make a nice addition to the collection. And these are clearly made to last a lifetime.
Got the jig made and now word will spread across the glass blowing community. Like it or not, you're the go to guy for glass making tools they can't find anymore. 👍
Greetings from New Zealand! It was a true pleasure to see such a beautiful tool being created, then used and appreciated by masters of another craft, too!
I blow glass (albeit as a flameworker instead of hotshop work like these guys) and have always wanted to forge my own jacks. These are stunning and it's nice to see the process done. I'm sure it was a one-off but if word gets out that you start producing these you'd have some very happy customers.
Människor som kan göra många användbara saker med sina händer förtjänar mycket respekt. Tack för intressant video, Torbjörn! Jag önskar dig och din familj hälsa och framgång i allt!
I love this channel so much. The peaceful beautiful life of farming, growing, and forging is such a fullfilling and creative life and i can only dream of one day living like this
It is actually because of Torbjörn that i want to become a hobby blacksmith. He actually managed to make me interested in it. I know there's many other good blacksmiths out there, but in my humble opinion, Torbjörn is one of the best ones out there, as he inspired me to become a blacksmith within the foreseeable future. I know i'm one day late in commenting, but still
That was a true Thorbjörn work of art. Creating something which requires some jig or tool to be made beforehand. And in doing that you have again put in quite some thought. Maybe you just were at it while I was wondering what you are up to while being on the northern shore of your lake. Thanks for all your inspiration.
@@torbjornahman I was tempted. But not knowing, how your stance on surprise visitors is, I rather respected your privacy. But next time, I would ask in advance and see what you would say.
Thank you so much for making this instructional! I've been aiming to get into making glass blowing tools and it's insane how little information there is. You're a legend!
Amazing, both the making of the blowing jacks and the blowing of the glass. I visited a glass blowing factory in the Lebanon once. Inside it was very hot and the air took your breath away.
As a finn, my Puukko senses started tickling when you put that 80CrV2 blade steel on the anvil. I also challenge you to make your own Puukko knife, I'd love to see your interpretation of Puukko.
21:56 is such beautiful teamwork and execution. Done without instruction or speaking at all, both men know their role and have muscle memory in the process. Lovely to watch your tool be put to use.
Maybe one day one of your "simple" projects will just be simple and boring, but s of now, has not been the case, always interesting. Looks like it works as intended, guys seem very happy with it, glad you included the "test run", those guys make what they do look so simple and easy and we all know that's not the case - real craftsmanship from both you and them.
Very cool project! I made a set of jacks for my sister who does glass blowing as a Christmas present, but forged from a single piece, and probably a lot heavier than what you would want.
Torbjörn do not get rid of your jig Your friend Spider Legs is going to want more glass blowing jacks for his crew 🤣🤣Winter is coming, the job will keep you warm in the forge 🤣Excellent work 👍👍👍 . Thank you for sharing. Take care of yourself 🇨🇦
Another 24 minutes of therapy! As ever with your creations the journey is the most enjoyable aspect - the tools you create to manufacture the final product and the ingenuity that entails.
*Wow... that was so great to see the new tool being made.... and then even greater to seeing it being used.... Glass blowing is fascinating to watch... to see what they make in the end. 🙂.*
Wow, very nice work, Torbjörn. Makes me miss my own days of doing glassblowing... though I was never so lucky to have a pair of jacks custom made for me. I guess it makes me miss blacksmithing, too, though I've never done as much of that... anyway, very very cool. I hope they'll appreciate those jacks for many years!
I love the evolution on your channel, from the early days of smithing tools for smithing, to now smithing tools for other crafts (and of course cooking implements periodically!) - and every video a joy to watch ❤
I missed your glassblowing vid, and just went back to watch it too. what a wonderful experience that must have been - such a humble bunch of gents y'all are - it's lovely to see. It is also apparent why you might want to make a gift for the shop as a smål thank you gift to them. Lovely work, Torbjörn!
Seeing you make tools for other artisans, and then putting them to use right away is fantastic, I can only imagine how satisfying that is for you. Thanks for sharing!
I've made several pair myself as I have been blowing glass for 15 years. My personal pair is a full meteorite clad strap with meteorite Damascus blades. The first of its kind im sure as I forged it about 3 years ago.
Fascinating in many ways. Your workmanship is impeccable, as always, and showing the way the tool is used was delightful. Thank you for sharing this with this excellent video.
Fantastic!! Thanks for a great video and for a good laugh. The darts in the door were pure class! 🤣😂🤣 You’re easily my favourite blacksmith on the tube!

I need a collab from Bobby and Torbjorn. Let's make it happen !!! I would love to see Torbjorn make something, and then Bobby put design on it.

It really is cool to watch such tool be so well crafted and then put to its use immediately.
I am fascinated by the various unique jigs you make as required for the current project!

My grandfather was a boilermaker and part of that was making his own tools. It seems it is still very much part of the steelworkers craft.
I believe it's the soul of blacksmithing! Not that every blacksmith needs to do it but still!
