Blacksmithing - Making glass blowing jacks

- In this video I make a pair of glass blowing jacks. It's probably the most used and most versatile tool in the glass blowers tool arsenal. At the same time it's also a super specialized tool. I had great fun making this one and my friends at Bergdalahyttan seemed to like my finished product!

Glassblowing, especially done by guys like that, is like magic to watch.
You're an absolute madman for that powerhammer jig! You really make some of the cleanest work around
He he, thanks!!
Bom dia, Sr, quero saber sua nacionalidade, estado e cidade;posso?.
Paz e Bem!.

I love when he dances. Also the contraption he made.
I can only imagine how satisfying it must be to create tools for people this talented.
As a professional glass blower and a hobbyist knifemaker who has contemplated making jacks for years this video is absolutely heaven sent. I have seen jacks made by other blacksmiths before and they usually approach it like they were making blacksmithing tools. Much more crude and meant to be operated by force. Jacks are a delicate precision tool and you made just that. Cudos!
Thanks!!
I’m glad you went back to the glass shop to show your tool in action it was the perfect ending.
Thanks!
Hats off to that! As a glassblower myself, I have always admired the tool makers of the craft. The jacks you made look as good as any of the ones i have seen. The comment that glassblower made about how smooth your jacks are was a really good compliment. There was an Italian tool maker named Carlo Dona who made some of the most beautiful glass jacks and he polished the blades to a mirror finish. In doing that, the wax wouldn't stay on the blades and would often scratch the glass. Maybe you did your research or maybe you just lucked out, but leaving some texture on the blades is important. Make some diamond shears next : ) Very impressive work!
Thank you very much!!
Being a helper in local glassblowing workshops, I knew the end form of your creation. Watching you get to that end form was a joy to watch. Your craftsmanship and attention to detail are inspiring. Then, seeing the jacks being used was a delight. Thank you for sharing!
Great! Thank you!
Oh man, I want. Beautiful as always
Thank you Bobby! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
I need a collab from Bobby and Torbjorn. Let's make it happen !!! I would love to see Torbjorn make something, and then Bobby put design on it.
As a finn, my Puukko senses started tickling when you put that 80CrV2 blade steel on the anvil.
I also challenge you to make your own Puukko knife, I'd love to see your interpretation of Puukko.
Torbjörn, you surely made lifetime-friends there, probable next step, you might receive orders for some more tools from the people at Bergdalahyttan, well done, mate.
I can already guarantee an order for a pair from me.
I've got jacks made in England Germany Italy Canada America and Mexico. Would definitely make a nice addition to the collection. And these are clearly made to last a lifetime.
Nothing like interaction with other art's and that is what you are. Thanks for bringing us along. Happy trails
It really is cool to watch such tool be so well crafted and then put to its use immediately.
Another example of Torbjorne’s genius. I have a forge and move metal but nothing like this. Here is an example of his fine blacksmithing and engineering skills very few have. JC🌵
Människor som kan göra många användbara saker med sina händer förtjänar mycket respekt. Tack för intressant video, Torbjörn! Jag önskar dig och din familj hälsa och framgång i allt!
Greetings from New Zealand! It was a true pleasure to see such a beautiful tool being created, then used and appreciated by masters of another craft, too!
Hello, and thanks!
Before long you will have a storage barn full of jigs. Nice work.
It is nice to see your projects doing what they were meant to do.
This was a great one. Start to finish. All the setup /tooling and seeing the other craftsman using it was awesome. Such skill from all of you!!!!!❤
Thanks!!
I would be so proud to even use those let alone own them. I’d love to see you make some Diamond shears or a soffietta
Great master, by far one of the best blacksmiths I have ever seen, you are my inspiration, thanks friend for sharing. Greetings from Chile.
Wow, thank you!
The addition of the clamp for deadening the sound was my favourite part. Great work Thor bear
I blow glass (albeit as a flameworker instead of hotshop work like these guys) and have always wanted to forge my own jacks. These are stunning and it's nice to see the process done. I'm sure it was a one-off but if word gets out that you start producing these you'd have some very happy customers.
Thank you so much for making this instructional! I've been aiming to get into making glass blowing tools and it's insane how little information there is. You're a legend!
Thanks, and good luck!
Excellent work and video! God bless you and yours. Praying for you.
Amazing and interesting - as always ❤
Thank you for that, cheers from Poland 🍻
Glad you enjoyed it!
Click, like, watch. In that order. This man has earned that. 🏴
True craftsmen appreciating each others work!
Wow, three old world craftsmen for the price of one. Amazing shills all around.
My grandfather was a boilermaker and part of that was making his own tools. It seems it is still very much part of the steelworkers craft.
I believe it's the soul of blacksmithing! Not that every blacksmith needs to do it but still!
Got the jig made and now word will spread across the glass blowing community. Like it or not, you're the go to guy for glass making tools they can't find anymore. 👍
Thanks! Believe it or not but there are still a few toolmakers out there making these!
It was nice to see such precise work done by you again. A feast for the eyes. Thank you. Warm greetings from Berlin.
I don't know why but your planning and measuring process is always so satisfying plus very great craftsmanship
Torbjorn Ahman for president of the world 😊😊
😊 Nit sure I could handle that one....
Always a real pleasure to see Thunder Bear at work. Fantastic work and great fixture work. Seeing it put to use was frosting on the cake.
Wow! So nice they agreed to do a demo!
Nicest guys!
@19:08 I love that the phrase “du duuhh” is universal.
Craftsman making tools for craftsmen. Bravo my friend, excellent work!
Zaustavio sam auto, da bih pogledao video.
I drago mi je, jer Vaš trud je vredan moje pažnje!
Hvala Vam na svemu!
Well, this is really something big. Beautiful work.❤
I love this channel so much. The peaceful beautiful life of farming, growing, and forging is such a fullfilling and creative life and i can only dream of one day living like this
Blacksmith ninja now 😂😂
😂😂😂
Nice to see two beautiful crafts meet. So well made, everything. Must be something of the swedes 😅
Now I'm gonna start watching glass blowing videos too...
Nice clean work as usual Thunderbear. Thank you.
Thunder Bear never disappoints! 😊
Beautiful work, Torbjorn, I could watch those folks at the glassworks all day
Me too!
Good job Sir
I just visited here today! Amazing place and such friendly people! So glad my friends brought me out here. Much love from canada!
You went to Bergdala today? Sweet. Yes, they are amazing. If you're in the neighborhood, I'm not that far away :)
@@torbjornahman I'm currently on vacation in Smaland, Sweden. Would it be possible to visit your workshop?
Absolutely. Send a DM on FB, IG!
@@torbjornahman Awesome!! I sent a dm!
the skill used is amazing!!!!
That was a true Thorbjörn work of art. Creating something which requires some jig or tool to be made beforehand. And in doing that you have again put in quite some thought. Maybe you just were at it while I was wondering what you are up to while being on the northern shore of your lake. Thanks for all your inspiration.
Thanks! You should have made a visit!
@@torbjornahman I was tempted. But not knowing, how your stance on surprise visitors is, I rather respected your privacy. But next time, I would ask in advance and see what you would say.
It is actually because of Torbjörn that i want to become a hobby blacksmith. He actually managed to make me interested in it. I know there's many other good blacksmiths out there, but in my humble opinion, Torbjörn is one of the best ones out there, as he inspired me to become a blacksmith within the foreseeable future. I know i'm one day late in commenting, but still
Wow, thank you! It's never too late for anything. Good luck!
Такая же история! Спасибо!
Beautiful work, both by you and the glass blowers. That must be a very satisfying feeling to see something you've made put to such good use.
Very beautiful and wonderful clip
Keep going, creative man
Sos el mejor, amigo... Saludos desde Rosario, Santa fe, Argentina.
Amazing, both the making of the blowing jacks and the blowing of the glass. I visited a glass blowing factory in the Lebanon once. Inside it was very hot and the air took your breath away.
Hello, a wonderful trip to two workshops with artists. Thank you for sharing your videos. Greetings
A master craftsman makes a tool for another master craftsman ! This makes my heart sing.
ill remember to knock before I come into your workshop. haha
That trick you have done with the little clamp to avoid resonance is so smart !
Always satisfying to see a professional use a tool you created for them.
К завершению этого видео, пришло понимание что каждый пиксель и каждый байт пропитан душой людей, которые любят свою работу, благодарю.
Love seeing tools made for others... This is brilliant.
its one of these videos i like best. you make a tool and then show, how its used.
*This is amazing idea* 😆🎉🎉
Maybe one day one of your "simple" projects will just be simple and boring, but s of now, has not been the case, always interesting. Looks like it works as intended, guys seem very happy with it, glad you included the "test run", those guys make what they do look so simple and easy and we all know that's not the case - real craftsmanship from both you and them.
He practices “Thunder-bear” Kung fu.

I regularly use the “burnt-hand” technique, but I’m only an amateur practitioner.
Ah the burnt-hand! Almost painless after a few hundred....
Blacksmithing and glass-blowing? What a great video!
Yes! Thank you!
Beautiful!
absolutely fabulous ! twice ! the blacksmithing and glass blowing . bravo
Absolute artistry, as always! Thank you for sharing!
I don’t understand the language but you can tell how much they love it! Not afraid to put such a wonderful tool right to work!
There's subtitles if you just turn on captions
Oops!
turn on the subs. well worth it!
You like to make tools, very nice video
Thank you Sir
You always find new interesting stuff to make
That is amazing! I'm very sure Jack really gets blown by that glass... 🤣 Ok jokes aside, always love watching your videos, there is always something new every time!
😁
That was awesome
Excellent work 👍👍❤❤
I thought I knew what this would become. I didn't. Took me to the 18th minute when I suddenly was able to see what it was. Terrific.
:) Thanks!
Здравствуйте! Приятно смотреть на людей, которые умеют делать вещи своими руками. Таких осталось очень мало, и их надо беречь
A wonderful artisan spectacle on the limit of perfection. Greetings from Barcelona, Spain
Ciao carissimo, di nuovo un formidabile attrezzo! Sei mitico, un forte abbraccio
Grazie!
What a lovely story from start to finish from raw metal to finished glass 😊
What kind of king do you guy. Thank you. congratulations.
Интрига в кузне сохранялась до конца : ).
The intrigue in the forge remained until the end :).
As always, top-notch craftmanship. Nice to see the tool in use 👍
Really nice precision forging and crafting.
Wow, very nice work, Torbjörn. Makes me miss my own days of doing glassblowing... though I was never so lucky to have a pair of jacks custom made for me. I guess it makes me miss blacksmithing, too, though I've never done as much of that... anyway, very very cool. I hope they'll appreciate those jacks for many years!
Thanks a lot!
Seeing you make tools for other artisans, and then putting them to use right away is fantastic, I can only imagine how satisfying that is for you. Thanks for sharing!
That was amazing. You are amazing. Sheer skill is its own artform.
Thanks!
I called it! Nice. Super nice.
Another 24 minutes of therapy! As ever with your creations the journey is the most enjoyable aspect - the tools you create to manufacture the final product and the ingenuity that entails.
Great, thanks!
Torbjörn do not get rid of your jig Your friend Spider Legs is going to want more glass blowing jacks for his crew 🤣🤣Winter is coming, the job will keep you warm in the forge 🤣Excellent work 👍👍👍 . Thank you for sharing. Take care of yourself 🇨🇦
Ha ha, thanks!
Fantastic
Well done! Your choice of material for the application is always thoughtful. Mighty fine work sir!
Thank you!
It’s a wonderfull tool. Glad to see that the glassmakers like it too. 👍
So much thought and craftsmanship for such a "simple" tool. The mutual appreciation you have with the glass artisans is good to see.
Nice job
great video loved the end product where they used what you made, keep up the work!
Impressive tool to start the video with.
Great work as always, make the next videos as soon as possible
I was imagining that you give them the tool and they make some cool glass cup for you 😁. Awesome video as always #
I’m glad I own stock in Vice Grips.!
You can't have too many, right?!
