Vi, you can bus Ibuprofen, Paracetamol (safer then Asprine) Coldmedicin etc at Kruidvat, look in the States for the ingrediënts and then look at our Dutch medicaments, I am sure you will find what you need. The staff of het Kruidvat is traind to give advice so just ask them. Good luck. Have a good time with your family
Supermarkets are open from 9.00 till 17.00 hr at Sundays in the Netherlands, and most other shops are too, so i don't know why you said it is a ghost town on Sunday. Everyone does his thing on Sunday with their family. Well you do live in Dordrecht so that maybe different since you are close to the "bible belt"there. But in Rotterdam, Schiedam etc that is just not the case. Aspirine and Ibuprofen you can buy at any drug store, like Kruitvat or DA drogist and any other medication might be available under a other name but with same purpose, like hot coldrex for a cold or something
Exactly, all drugstores and even many supermarkets nowadays have these meds like ibuprofen, paracetamol, as well as meds for basic cold/flu, cough syrup etc. that can be had without a doctors recipe.
I've always found it weird that Americans are so reliant on over-the-counter meds. I suppose it's the US work ethics and being afraid of losing your job when you get sick, so you pump yourself full of meds to get through the day. In the Netherlands: if you're sick, you're sick. Go to bed, take time off to get better. Maybe take some light pain killers to take the edge off. If you're REALLY sick, call a doctor. Don't dose yourself on over-the-counter meds.
Happy to see you back in the channel! And thank you for informing us about the airport situation! Our flight is next week but now people say that 1,5 hours in 1 line is enough... Hugs from a fellow Expat Family in Almere!
A small adjustment: aspirine, paracetamol or ibuprofen can be bought in most supermarkets and 'drogist'. Maybe you mixed it with antibiotics. You can only get some via your gp. But dutch gp's are very reluctant to subscribe it.
...and paracetamol etcetera can not be found INSIDE the supermarket. It is typically sold at a service counter (where you can also buy tobacco and pay for fresh flowers).
I live in a town of 20,000 inhabitants and our local Albert Heijn (supermarket) is open every day from 07:00 to 22:00 except on Sunday it is 10:00 to 22:00. About a third of our municipal council seats are for christian parties. I looked it up and every Albert Heijn supermarket in Dordrecht is open from 12:00 to 18:00 on Sundays. For a city of 120,000 inhabitants that is a small window of opening hours. I assume the municipal council is dominated by christian parties, because the hours the supermarkets are open are exactly between church service times. We used to have the same opening hours on Sunday in my municipality until the christian parties lost the majority.
I dont think we really have ‘cold medication’ here, just take rest and take some paracetamol/ibuprofen if needed. What does cold medication do? I know doctors who say ‘the cold will last 7 days without cold medication, and a week wíth cold mediation’, so maybe its an idea to get used to less self-medication. 😉
You should try to go to a drogisterij, like kruidvat. You can get a lot of medication there that doesn’t need prescriptions. O wouldn’t know which meds you would want to get without a doctor that you can’t get there. If it is not available at a drogisterij, there is probably a good reason for it.
Big city's are different, all shops are open 7 days a week. And you can get a pain killer in every supermarktet, drugstore's, i even can order on an online supermarket, if you go to the doctor, for painkiller,he gonna send you to a drugstores, I don't know how things work in Dortdrecht, but i also live in a smal city, and i can go shopping 7 days a week. I gues you have to check this on your city site online . Anyway enjoy your family time, and hope you have a save returns
I don't know nyquil but take a look at something like Vicks Vapo rub. That is non prescription based and can be bought in any drugstore (Kruidvat / Etos / etc) in the Netherlands. You rub this on your chest and this gives some relieve during your sleep.
You have a "Drogisterij" a shop where you can buy all kind of non prescription "meds" a lot of them non working, like those "homeopathic" quack stuff, and you have the "Apotheker," where you go to get the meds the doctor prescribes for you, and you can buy some of the other stuff there too. Aspirin you can buy in any supermarket. Common Colds? there is no working medicine against that, eat drop, don't chew it, let it melt in the mouth, , that will work. Common cold comes from a VIRUS, so no, Penicillin will absolutely NOT work against that..., that works against bacteria, not viruses, and you only get penicillin through a doctor for obvious reasons. Overusing penicillin causes bacteria to become resistant against it. healthcare here is based on science and common sense most of the time. So that is why you can't buy medications just like that, it is dangerous.
She was referring to the medications that you take to alleviate cold symptoms , not to cure the cold. Here in the US, you can get plenty of meds to completely alleviate cold symptoms - this is also based on science.
Doei.
Just curious, what language do you speak when you're with your new Dutch friends? I cam imagine it's still mostly English? That would make sense, bcz as long as you don't speak Dutch you might be treated as a friend, but also still as somewhat of a tourist.
Please think again about stacking up on medication - there are reasons why antibiotics or strong painkillers i.e. opioids are not sold over the counter. It is to protect you, and in case of antibiotics: to protect all of us. If used too often or used incorrectly, they are no longer effective, for all of us. A common cold is just that: a common cold. Use something for your cough, throat, or to clear your nose - and that’s about it.
I thoroughly enjoy your experiences and observations, thanks for sharing! I understand that We Dutch can be hard to befriend. I have no experience in this field as I am ‘native’ and my wife was ‘adopted’ by my friends real soon after arriving in the Netherlands. Someone I once talked to and lived in the US for a while mentioned that his observation was that in the US people make friends quicker but the friendships tend to be more ‘superficial’ and in the moment. I think the Dutch tend to go for more special and long term ‘friendships for life’. It might help if you do some volunteer work (like at your son’s school) or join a club. There is an incredible club-life here and almost every organized sport, interest or hobby has a club where you can join and meet people. Going to a gym is too individual but joining a tennis-, volleyball-, football- or scouting club will give you better interaction. My wife is still close to friends she made at her sewing course. As far as I know there are reliable over-the-counter medicines for sale here. Have you tried ETOS, KRUIDVAT or HOLLAND & BARRET for aspirin, cold medicines and homeopathic alternatives?
Fi, be glad. I heard of people that could only check in 3 hours before the flight, than had to wait 5 hours in queue for security, so they missed their flight. (Not their fault) At least you managed to catch your flight. Schiphol has been a mess since like forever it seems. Sorry I have to go and contradict you. Asprin and Iboproven you can get over the counter, actually those you can buy at most supermarkets, and drugstores. (Jumbo, Kruitvat etc) Not saying don't take some with you, but the examples you used are wrong. I know because I buy my Ibu always at the supermerket, and Renny (heart burn). Prescription meds, yes get those ahead for sure but check what you can and cannot get over the counter.
It's verry nice to hear that we Dutch people are ok to live with and that many things are better in NL then in the US. I wish you a verry nice time with your family in the US and have a save trip back to Dordrecht !!!
Praise yourself lucky you even made it to your parents n the USA. At this moment the Netherlands is suffering from the fact that low-paid workers managed to find better paid jobs and they won't be returning to jobs that are essential but underpaid. Why would someone be loading luggage in airplanes for 12 Euros per hour if they can work in a factory for 15 Euros per hour? There's a shortage on people wanting to work despite the fact that the Netherlands has 370.000 unemployed workers who receive millions on social welfare, so we need to find foreigners to do the underpaid jobs. Yet the right wing political parties are claiming that foreigners are stealing the jobs and stupid Dutch people believe them. As to the over the counter medicines: People in the Netherlands do not take any medicines when they suffer from a common cold or the flu. Hot soup, rest and relaxation and you'll be up and running in a few days. Dutch people aren't pussies like the Americans who need anti-biotics and opioids for a minor cold.
So i dont understand youre ibroprofun or asprin you can get that in the Netherlands in het Kruitvat or at the supermarket just at the counter mostley there were they have the sigarets. Then the Sunday;s that is just above the rivers the south the sundays are different then what you just to. Over here everthing is open on sunday. OH that is nice to know what the gender of the baby is but not matter what it is going to make you happy.
NOT TRUE! You mentioned Asperine and Ibuprofen not beiing sold over the counter; i buy them always at Het Kruidvat, they are free accesable without any prescription, there will be some other medicine though wich you have to have a prescription for however.
Medication asprine, iberprofen and so you can at the Drogisterij - Kruidvat, Etos and so on. Right from the shelves. First learn the language, then it will be easier to make friends. Show some effort will be appreciated.
I always buy paracetamol and/or ibuprofin at the supermarket (any really). Those are not restricted. Antibiotics is a different thing (luckily)
She must be mistaken here, asperine are very very easy to buy , no description needed

Even Lidl has some
Do your research

And that is a good thing, antibiotics should not be over used

What? You definitely can buy over the counter medication. They even sell them in a supermarket. Aspirin and Ibuprofen etc. is no problem at all.

In the bigger cities the shops and supermarkets are open.
On Sundays
Why would you need medication when you have cold?
It's verry nice to hear that we Dutch people are ok to live with and that many things are better in NL then in the US.

Take a train to Denmark, and a plane from Denmark :)

Everything works properly… …except for Schiphol 😅
😅😅
And only at the moment. Before the pandemic it worked smoothly!
You can’t but ibuprofen in the store ????
Buy

Lot of nonsense in this video!
