In Dutch culture, we're supposed to be busy and make the most efficient use of our time. Hence, time is a prime resource, and _being_ on time is seen as respect for the other's undoubtedly busy schedule. Being late without any good excuse (in our cultural context) basically tells the other 'I consider your time as less valuable than mine'.
It's the same reason we make appointments far in advance for even social visits.

I can absolutely relate to you Fi. Especially with waste recycling and punctuality. Hunnaaay I was always late to events when I first moved here but I’m soo proud of how I’ve adjusted and you should be too🤗. Sending you hugs and wishing you the best delivery.

The last weeks can be the heaviest to go through, but I'm glad it also means your nausea will be coming to an end soon now.
I hope the next few weeks will be a little easier for you, and that everything will go well once your baby decides to show themself to the world.
As for paying with your phone: if you have a mobile banking app on your phone (which you can get for most Dutch banks,) you can also get a mobile payment app that you link to it. Then, when you pay with your phone (make sure NFC function of your phone is turned on,) it'll receive a signal from the pinmachine, and directly go to the app, where it either automatically transfers the money, or you have to type in your pin for the transfer to go through.
It's really easy to use, especially if you also use the app for some stores to scan for groceries yourself (like with the AH app)
But if you're not using it, it might be wise to turn off NFC, since it uses a bit more battery, and even though the risk is small, there might be some people that try to take advantage of people having their phone in their pockets with the NFC function turned on constantly.

Cashless paying is different all over Europe. For example, a lot of Germans still use cash.

Wow, you’re so Dutchified I feel like I get behind, lol. Although I hate coming in late, I don’t mind other people arriving late but for some reason I don’t allow myself or my family to be late.

Glad to here your progress. The USA is known for consumerism and wastefulness.
I know because I lived there for a long time. It disturbs me greatly.

Point #6 is just common sense. Leave space to let the able get out first, wait for the elderly, help a person with a child-carrier (and those tourist-bikers). Then go in.

Hello Fi... If you want to use your phone to pay it needs to have RFID, the system used in the cards themselves.

Your phone must have a NFC chip, most of the new phones have them now. By Android you use Google wallet and on a iPhone you use Apple pay.
Most important your bank must support this, all of the bigger banks do

On the phone it is a digital purse. If you have a android phone than it is google pay and if you have a iphone its a wallet app. We are a bit crazy with the order thing. Everthing has to go in a surtain way of place. Cant wait to see the little 1 , you are looking good, so good luck with the birth but i hope we see i video before you are in your due week, have a nice weekend.

I recognize the general point of the Dutch appreciation for ppl being on time. But c'mon.. 18:02 instead of 18:00 and "the person might be wondering if you're even coming"? Strange kind of Dutchies you've encountered even if the picture you paint here may be somewhat exaggerated. Also feeling obliged to text when you're just 3 minutes late is definitely not a normal Dutchie habit.
And considering home birth: good on you! Under normal circumstances, giving birth is not a medical condition necessitating hospital intervention. So the "crazy idea" is exactly the other way around, and smacks of unnecessary medicalization of life. Cheers from Amsterdam!

Well, I sometimes do (texting when I'm three minuts late). But of course it depends on the context. I won't when visiting friends with whom I'll spend the entire evening, but I will with colleagues if we've just squeezed in a short 15-minute meeting between all other meetings to very quickly discuss something important.

I have an android phone and I can put my bank card in Google wallet and pay with my phone. It depends on what bank you have and if you have an android phone or an Iphone.

Home birth is very normal, very populair is in water birth
The water relax you, and that makes it more easy to give birth.
Anyway hope you have a easy birth also, can't wait to hear, how you experience yours

Although home birth is quite normal, also consider that a significant percentage of planned home births ends in hospital after all: 49% of first births and 17% of seconds and further births. Most common reason is that women need pain relief that cannot be given at home. I hope you also know that pain relief is much less commonly given to women in labor in The Netherlands than in other countries. You really have to insist to get it.

Home birth is not so normal anymore, only 12% of the women still give birth at home.

This is not a Google or Apple pay. Almost every major bank has an app to pay via the internet. For an additional monthly fee, it can also be used to pay electronically instead of the debit card.

Dont know about the card thing i pay every thing cash . Contactless payments are the most idiotic way to pay in any case , unsafe and extra leak in bank security . skimmer and scammers easy acces. Only idiots would use it ,then complain their acounts have been maxed out .
The pendulem clock and watch have been invented in the netherlands that should say enough . astro navigation is strick time based .
Time is money a train leaves at the time at the board it doesnt mean it arives on that time . on time of departure anoyed 5 minutes late anger 10 minutes late blind rage .
The dutch take time for planing in all aspects it may take longer to come to a disision but in the end they are ahead of scedule . .
First come first serve ingrained in dutch DNA trade and ships its not the size its who is first . doctors offices , you ask who was last or observe who is in the room and you know when its your turn .

Only idiots would use contactless payment? Such a statement makes me wonder where you put your savings, probably not in a bankaccount but in an old sock under your bed? 🫣

Beterschap. I am paying cash, because in that way I can better manage my budget. In the beginning of the month I pin a amount of cash money and that's what I spend on my groceries.
