  • The 5 Whys method is part of the Toyota Production System. And, as my regular viewers know, I am a big fan of raiding Japanese management and production techniques and applying them to strengthen our project management toolkit. So, how do we use the 5 Whys method?
    Five Steps…
    1 Gather your team
2 Define what the problem is
3 Find root cause with 5 whys
    4 Develop solution
5 Take action to implement the solution

A while back, I asked Project Managers in a couple of forums what material things you need to have, to do your job as a Project Manager. They responded magnificently. I compiled their answers into a Kit list.

Use 5 Whys to get to the cause of an event or outcome. It's not as rigorous at FMEA, but it is a quick and effective way of uncovering the primary reason why something has happened.
