I got really lucky that our home already had a covered front porch & lucky to have a handy husband! We (he 😁 though I did “help”) just attached wire to enclose it & put in a screen door attached to one of the columns & added another post for the other side of the door. At our house, the UPS driver & visitors are greeted by our feline curiosity committee. 🐈🐈⬛🐈🐈⬛🐈🐈⬛ We have six. Two sets of bonded siblings & two singletons. One of the best parts is the floor to ceiling cat climbing pole. A thick 8ft tall pvc pipe with a large decorative outdoor area rug wrapped around it & screwed into place…in retrospect…velcro may have been a better option to attach the rug to more easily hose it down occasionally. We have several 2’x3’ litterboxes & put folding tables over them with cat beds for them to relax on. To avoid needing double doors or block access to our front door…I have a cat door in the window that I lock from inside the house (with all the cats indoors) when I want to clean inside the catio. In the future we plan to finish screening off the rest of the porch & have another unlocked screen door that UPS & guests can use to get to front door.
my elderly cat only needs the lower half of my balcony screened in. i supervise her to make sure she doesnt try to go over but mostly she eats her cat grass, watches the courtyard, and naps on the chair. it cost a few bucks in 3/4" sparrow netting (not the extruded bird net) and some zip ties.
Very informative video with many nice creative designs. Definitely would like to see more catios when possible. This helps get the creative forces activated.
Picking up my new little boy on Tuesday! Hes so beautiful! (Profile pic) Just lost my 5 yr old ginger domestic Luna to cancer. It was so devastating. Hopefully, this little munchkin will ease the pain. I see a catio in his future!😻😻
I stapled mesh on my second floor patio.. Stuck a cat tree and grew some grass for waffles.. Might cost me some of my deposit when I remove the staples at the end of my lease. But absolutely worth it for him to enjoy some fresh air without the worry about high traffic up front of my apartment complex.
I’m on a fourth floor balcony, we bought lattices and zip tied them onto the bars. Still figuring out how to attach netting without a ladder and a harness, but I just make sure it’s supervised until we have that in there. Our landlord didn’t seem to care thankfully.
We live in an apartment with a balcony. First catio was about the size of a linen closet, extending from the window down to the floor. A year or two ago we made a new one enclosing the whole balcony, so we can go there with the cat. It has a cat-safe food garden, he loves rolling around and lying on the warm or cool concrete, lying in and eating from his grass box, bird and people watching, etc. In nice weather, we keep the door open with just a screen for him to come and go as he pleases, and when it gets cooler, we usually still keep the window open, but he'll pester us to let him out through the door instead, mostly just using the window to come back in. He also likes to pounce and dig in the snow and even make snow angels :D We're looking at making some changes soon so he'll have easier access to the third shelf and hammock, since he won't make the jump, and also get some wind shelter so he can get more use.
At least 90% of houseplants are DEADLY to cats, dogs, horses, and birds. Spider plants are among the best for hardiness, not to mention safety and detoxifying your indoor air. I also grow millet and sorghum for munchie grass, in addition to cat grass. If you grow cat grass, be weary of rye! Ergot is a very real threat. If you are good with plants, try growing catnip. Smells kinda funky, but I know my cats LOVE it.
@@JacksonGalaxy I've done a BUNCH of research over the years, and I try to stay up to date. Thank you for your work; I refer everyone and their cousin to your channel.
A catio is my next project. We have 11 indoor rescue cats. And we could all do with a little more space. So a catio is the plan. Get them outside where they can run off some energy, get out of each other (and our) hair. All while being safe. Just need to figure out where the best place to put it would be, both for the cats and us.
Maxie doesn't have a catio but she gets to go outside for a walk every day with her hooman! She gets plenty of sunshine, grassy treats and do I need to say birb action?😺🐦🐦😉😁
@Kaylee Wooten YESS....so glad to hear that you're doing it too!👍👍😺😺 Living in apt makes it difficult for us but this walking thing is really working out for her.
My daughter has just that thing !! A sun room plus a screened in spot with door for going in and out ! With a top ( we have neighborhood dogs and at the time they were young enough that the hawk could pick them up for a dinner -to -go !!
My three girls will have their catio soon. We just moved 2,200 km from Hermanus, Western Cape, South Africa to the top end of KZN (also South Africa). They went from indoor/outdoor cats to being confined mostly to a bedroom for the past month. As soon as my garden flat is completed the Catio will be built. Two of the girls are 11 years old, the third is 6. Huge change in their little lives, but all for the best in time. Will be checking all your Catio tips to bring the outdoors (which they love) back to them. They are confined as there are four large dogs and two little ones on the property. Thank you Jackson for settings my mind at ease regarding changing to indoors cats. I was horribly stressed thinking i was being cruel by restricting them from their outdoor adventures.
Thank you for this! I made it for my rescue. She’s been in the streets for 4 1/2 years. And I adopted her. She loves going outside to look around but loves living inside her home.
Finally!!! This is what I try to do with my other half who loves our cats and who wants them to be happy and loves to catify our garden and home,it will help a lot !👍
Jackson, I’d love to see a video on long distance travel. I am moving 1400 miles in 11 days, and I would LOVE some advice. She, her name is Magic, hates car rides, and I’ll be driving a U-haul.
Wow! I head that the brand felaway(spelling?) has some calming hormone stuff you can use for anxiety and, if Jackson doesn’t get to you question, I’ve seen some RUclips videos and blogs that deal with this. One used a crate with a small litter box (it was a collapsible nylon one $12 on Amazon) and ace bandage wrapped similar to a thundershirt. You’d have to make room though. I know some vets give anti anxiety meds for cats too. Hopefully you have a good journey!
@@anggieb.2936 I do have the feliway. The litter box will have to be outside and use when we stop. There’s simply no room for a big carrier in a cab of the U-Haul. And I won’t put her in the back. I’ve heard children’s Benadryl is good to calm them down, but I don’t like to just take somebody’s random advice.
I moved 250 miles (a walk in the park compared to 1400🥴) with my two fur babies recently and had no clue. Ended up putting them in carriers in back seat with seatbelts + cushioning in between to minimize movement and covered the top with sheets to prevent too much stimulation. Also gave Cerenia to Naga who experiences motion sickness. A video on trips (could combine moving long/short distance, vet, etc) would be super helpful!
@@magicalmystery1964 yup, how would you even calculate the dosage?! I’ve never heard about the Benadryl for cats though I have for dog’s allergies. If I went the meds route I would definitely consult the vet.
@Rose Madder thanks. I actually have six cats. The other five are going via pet transport. But Magic does not take well to new people, so I’m taking her with me.
Unfortunately in some countries you need a building permit and are taxed for any "extra room" including catios. One woman (who's cat had some kind of stress disorder...) Couldn't put up a simple net to block off her cat on the balcony as it was forbidden by the town hall.
Some of these catios are amazing. Personally if I was building one I'd put a solid floor into it to stop digging, mech to stop entry / exit of the cat / other animals then super fine fly screen mech on the outside to keep snakes [can squeeze through the smallest spaces - even chicken wire] , mosquitos , flies, spiders out. I'd also have a roof on it to keep the rain out so it can be enjoyed by both human / cat but still allow lots of light / sun in. My windows have the same setup with the thicker cat proof mech then fly mech outside as he learned that if he hangs off standard fly mech, it collapses / tears. I caught him outside on the ledge one night before I installed that which is a high fall (certain injury if he fell) I considered building him an out the window catio but what if it fails and falls ? I can't risk it. It is too high up to put supports to the ground and I can't go drilling into the wall. He's hiding behind my 2nd monitor with half his face sticking around the corner keeping an eye on me to see when I get up. At that time, he'll jump up and follow me for some food. (night time routine). After breakfast he stays warm sitting on my lap / between my legs near my knees or sometimes half on me and half on the arm rest of the recliner.
I would love a catio. My cat was a stray in the neighborhood . I got her shots and fixed and everything else that a young cat needs, before she became mine. She often looks at cat tv....watching all the other strays in the neighborhood among other stuff. I think she would enjoy being outside again.
Yes, I've wondered lately how old this name has been a thing. My sister & her husband built their house & it has been through revisions as the family grew. They Had a full house width porch, but now part has become a screened in 3 season sitting room with 3 doors to access house & yard & porch. Now it's cat friendly & they've never called it a Catio, but it could be classified as such.
Hello Jackson Galaxy. I have been watching your TV show, "My Cat From Hell", everyday in my home country, Finland 🇫🇮. That show is so awesome, i really want to watch it again. I also have been reading your book, "Catifaction: Designing a Happy and Stylish Home for Your Cat (And You)" - it's actually a good book. I'm also a cat fan. Also i admit, that many of my friends, also some of the women, call me with lots of nicknames, such as "Tomcat", "Cool Cat", "Street Cat", and "Alley Cat". You are an awesome cat person. In fact, you are the greatest hero in the feline history. Thank you, and keep up the good work. Miaow. ✌️😺👍
Wow! I am blown away with all those AMAZING CATIOS!!! Thank you for another awesome video and tips Jackson!!! And for the people that built and sent those catios I give you...👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤
Early every weekday, my cat from hell, comes on tv. I'm old so I can sleep anytime. I try to wake up to watch that show everyday. Over the years I've had some cats that would drive some of those people nuts. It just seemed natural to do somethings. I guess it wasn't. I really love how you help the poor misunderstood cats.
Ok my work in progress catio photo taken through a dirty window was embarrassing! lol. My point was it can be done with leftover pieces and garage sale items. It gets sun on the ground. I have 3 cats, Charlie, Carly and Cherish.. they love it! Plan to paint it and upgrade a bit next month. The other catios are inspiring!
I didn’t even notice! Great job reusing and recycling and your cats will surely not mind a dusty window when they get to go out, that’s all that matters. Thanks for sharing!
@@anggieb.2936 that dirty window is pretty much their doing! Lol do you cats sneeze or wipe their wet noses on windows and mirrors? Goofy but they do. Thank you for the reply. They have 24/7 access through a tiny doggie door
@@LarylCH omg, I probably should look at the window mine uses. I never noticed before 😬 but I’ll be looking now! I’m away from home but I just noticed the dirty window sill that needs a major touch up now.
Good timing for this! We are planning on building a home next year and are in designing stages. One of the spaces we are designing is a catio (or maybe two 😃!). I'm saving this video in my house planning folder!
I set up a security camera for my catio. It records encounters with other animals. My cat loves deer, wild turkeys, squirrels, even mice, but watch out if you're a raccoon or stray cat approaching the catio. My cat will not allow you anywhere near his territory. Lol! I even purchased a patio heater so he and I can sit outside on these late cold autumn nights. Very peaceful, relaxing, and no mosquitos!
Ok, I’m convinced. I’m going to build my own catio. My baby girl will love it, as she sometimes engages in unscheduled outdoor adventures. Thank you for the inspiration!
Air locks are sooo important when you have rescue/foster kittens... Right now I find it really hard to get in and out in the morning and evening when it's kitten zoomy time!
Thanks for all the great ideas. We are getting our large balcony secured well next spring. Hope to make it visually appealing to us as well, as our toddler and we also have to use it. Many good ideas here! :)
This seems like a great idea. I’ll definitely do this when I get my own place. My kitten is 9 months old and we do at least take him out on a leash. Though does anyone have suggestions on how to get him to stop biting my legs like I’m a toy? So far I have tried toys and firm “no”s. I am also do schedule play time in the morning and the evenings around the time he gets fed. The only that had gotten him to seem uninterested is no reaction and basically becoming a statue.
The only thing that will probably work is second kitty. They really want to play a lot and if you are the only play partner... well. And to be honest, from my experience, 2 cats or 1 doesn't really matter, in some aspects it's actually easier with two.
@@JacksonGalaxy I have watched them and I have sent them to my family members so they know too. Thank you. It’s been a long time since I have had a kitten. My last cat I had for 16 years and my kitten now is just learning while I’m also learning how to communicate with him as well.
Possible cat daddy dictionary idea: beaming. Short for beaming up to the mothership in my house, wherein the feline in question zones out for no real apparent reason and stares blankly at some random object for minutes on end. Also, a question... Why do my cats feel the need to obsessively groom thier people? I have a couple of lickers that just don't quit, lol!
Hey Jackson, big fan here. Just a constructive criticism. I like the fun intros but I wish they were shorter. I tend to start enjoying your videos once you get serious about it. People who specially don't know you might abandon the video during that process. Just a feedback IMO. Keep it up!

I want to build one for our three cats but I'm worried about poisonous bugs/spiders getting into the catio. How do you guys deal with this? (From Australia)
Dear Jackson, You are adorable! My hubby and I have been watching you for over 6 years now. We have 2 much loved rescue cats ( Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle; funnily enough they are exactly like their namesakes). I just wanted to point you in the direction of PG Wodehouse who wrote the most hilarious books. I feel sure you’d enjoy reading the ‘Blandings castle series’ ( full of an irresistible collection of eccentric peers, formidable aunts, the bright young things of the 20’s in the setting of Blandings castle, Britain’s most beloved fictional country home). Much love to you from England.
I would like to know about the catio in New England winter. I plan on having a removable or movable/foldable catio for my cats next spring. I also would like you to interview Margaret Chow about her catio.
It's great that people show some catios that are no that expensive to put up, so others can do this as well! There are places hat sell lumber and wire second-hand, so not as expensive, yet very usable, and doable. {hey Jackson, where is that so-cool face-hair trim that you used to {usually} wore, that was so rad, man! Like making you one cool looking cat!! Hey, that window-box for cats could be used on a rental, since it can also be used for plants for the next tenant. Did you know that you can use a bird aviary with an avian door to house window connection, for a catio! So glad that you still keep on keeping on, with help to cat owners everywhere!! Bless you and your family, including your animal family with safety, and good health! Keep these videos coming, for we are watching you. !
A synonym for catio: Catiary, a portmanteau of "cat" and "aviary", due to the how some of these resemble an aviary. I've also heard it being called a "Felière" in German, from "Felis" (latin for cat) and "Volière", the German word for aviary. Though the word "Catio" is still more common here
Built my CutiePie's catio out of 2ft x 6ft metal grid wall panels for the sides & 2ft x 4ft panels for the roof (overall footprint is 4ft wide x 8ft long) that are assembled with grid wall screw fasteners, and one panel is attached with specific fasteners that act as hinges for a door. Grid wall brackets hold 12" wide planks of wood - screwed onto the brackets in lengths from 12" - 48", the steps & ledges can be easily reconfigured. CutiePie likes to call the catio the "Shark Tank" because she's the tiger shark kitty :)
I've been wanting a catio for a long time but I'm not a DIY type person. I don't like the look of the pre built models. I've talked to some contractors and when I tell them I want a catio they have no idea what I'm talking about. I show them pictures and there vision isn't my vision of what I want. Or they just simply don't want to do the job so they either quote me a outrageous price, or they have some huge waiting list.
Cats off to these people for making those beautiful spaces!!! I live in an apartment so I'm not allowed to build on my deck. I'm looking into a rolling one on wheels so that it's temporary but allows alittle outside time
We converted our 20 x 4ft porch into a screened in catio for our 3 cats. Come rain or shine, they love being out there. They have access to the house via a window cat flap and come and go as they please.
I moved in 2017. The best part of this house is the screened in porch. I have a pampasian chair for reading and Grace has a bench and old table out there to climb on She loves it. I have considered calling it a catio.
My cat loves his catio! Please can you do a advise video about introducing cats and babies! I’m Currently pregnant and want to do all do all i can to make sure my cat is ok with this change!

Thank you. I never thought i could have outdoor room for cats. Now i believe i can do it on a budget. My 3 cats are Gregg 14, Bonhe 10, Rhony 7 in March 2023. I am amazed at the window one its terrific and the hollowed out tree trunk wonderful. Thanks to everyone sharing their amazing Catio's. Love Bernadette xoxox
FAVORITE episode yet!!! 🙀😻😺😸
I've never heard of a catio. The name is self-explanatory. Thank you for a really cool video!!!
I’m so happy. We’re getting ready to build a new catio. Lol. We have aviaries right now, and we want something easier to access. 🥰
FANTASTIC accent. Well done Jackson. Just like mine (I'm a Brit). I have 5 cats. Love you😚😻
my elderly cat only needs the lower half of my balcony screened in. i supervise her to make sure she doesnt try to go over but mostly she eats her cat grass, watches the courtyard, and naps on the chair. it cost a few bucks in 3/4" sparrow netting (not the extruded bird net) and some zip ties.
Very informative video with many nice creative designs. Definitely would like to see more catios when possible. This helps get the creative forces activated.
Picking up my new little boy on Tuesday! Hes so beautiful! (Profile pic)
Just lost my 5 yr old ginger domestic Luna to cancer. It was so devastating. Hopefully, this little munchkin will ease the pain. I see a catio in his future!😻😻
it's nice the kitties can peek at each other through the leaves of the tree
Wow, imagine a catio & home office combined, shucks gotta go to work ....
❤️
He also likes to pounce and dig in the snow and even make snow angels :D
We're looking at making some changes soon so he'll have easier access to the third shelf and hammock, since he won't make the jump, and also get some wind shelter so he can get more use.
Great stuff!! Check out my video on poisonous plants. Hopefully I hit some of your big points, but I learned something from you. Millet it is!
Your fellow cat lover The Kitten Lady built an awesome catio for her rescue kittens and her own cats.
This is not even funny anymore! Every new video is about something I have been talking with my wife recently! How do you know?!?! 😂
I literally just finished the catio for my little ones yesterday.
"cause our man Jackson is santa, Yo'! lol
Mwhahahaha the cat daddy mind control machine is working! 🤣
My daughter has just that thing !! A sun room plus a screened in spot with door for going in and out ! With a top ( we have neighborhood dogs and at the time they were young enough that the hawk could pick them up for a dinner -to -go !!
Jackson you're awesome! Always great information & you're hilarious🤣You do high brow tongue in cheek as well as Ze Frank, high praise indeed!
We built a catio for our 3 cats a month ago and they love it! It has also helped improve their relationship with each other.
If only ALL people protected their balcony like the lady in the video!👍👍👍
I caught him outside on the ledge one night before I installed that which is a high fall (certain injury if he fell)
I considered building him an out the window catio but what if it fails and falls ? I can't risk it. It is too high up to put supports to the ground and I can't go drilling into the wall.
He's hiding behind my 2nd monitor with half his face sticking around the corner keeping an eye on me to see when I get up. At that time, he'll jump up and follow me for some food. (night time routine). After breakfast he stays warm sitting on my lap / between my legs near my knees or sometimes half on me and half on the arm rest of the recliner.
Awesome stuff! Big loving kitty hugs from India! 🇮🇳
I would love a catio. My cat was a stray in the neighborhood . I got her shots and fixed and everything else that a young cat needs, before she became mine.
She often looks at cat tv....watching all the other strays in the neighborhood among other stuff. I think she would enjoy being outside again.
"Catio". Love it. I have wanted one for decades. Until now I didn't know that the space / concept had a name. 🐈
I love cat daddy dictionary!!! 💕
LOVE this catio video. Please keep them coming.
Getting a lot of great ideas for my own furbabies' (Sammie and Ari) catio.
I don’t think my HOA will allow a catio, but when I fix my deck, I may see about getting a three season room added to it and add a catio in there.
And for the people that built and sent those catios I give you...👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤
if you can assemble ikea furniture, you can DIY a catio
Feral friends cafe is my fav part
Oi Jackson, você têm ideias inovadoras e incrível...sempre pensando no bem estar de nossos bebês 🐈🐾
💜🐱💯👏👏👏
I designed and built my own which includes a 12' tower. May have over-did it a bit but that's what I do apparently.
This is awesome!!!!!! And very helpful. Any advice or ideas for renters ? Or maybe an episode for people who rent and have limited leeway. Thank you
great idea and will do
@@JacksonGalaxy thank you
Ok, I’m convinced.
This man is so awesome! I'd marry him! 😻
Thanks for all the great ideas. We are getting our large balcony secured well next spring. Hope to make it visually appealing to us as well, as our toddler and we also have to use it. Many good ideas here! :)
This was a great video. Thanks ☺️
1:30 Wow this is Gent, Belgium, the city I'm living in :o
I wish I could have even just a balcony to build a catio :(
And our cats cannot bird watch, only bug watch... We live right next to the street where no bird ever lands.
I absolutely love this channel. So much!!
There’s a video on that!
Check out my video on “do cats see spirits?”
Hey Jackson, big fan here. Just a constructive criticism. I like the fun intros but I wish they were shorter. I tend to start enjoying your videos once you get serious about it. People who specially don't know you might abandon the video during that process. Just a feedback IMO. Keep it up!
I appreciate your sculpted & groom beard/mustache! Cool dress blue jacket & accent.
I run FL pedigreed Maine Coon Cattery, COONPALS. I quote you so often & share all your tips & advice with my dedicated families for the benefits for our COONPALS! Love you, Cat Daddy.
Commenting because I cant like a video twice! Catios are great and I'd love to build one for my kitties!
We love Jackson and our 3 catios! Thank you for doing a show on this topic! Meow...
Your kitties are so lucky! Living in apartments makes it difficult for us, but we are totally for the catio partio idea! 😺🎉🥂😺
Send in videos! We will be having future tours of cations including my own so join in!
@@JacksonGalaxy Hello yes, will do!
@@meowdventure We hope that someday your kitties will have some outdoor space too.
Hilarious and useful!!!!Thank you all cat people!
Jackson, I've been following you since the 1st season of My Cat From Hell. Love all your vids, but I had to tell you: you look great in a shirt, tie & jacket! Keep up the great cat work! Love from NH
Excellent video! Thank you good sir! Our cats Penny, Gloria, and Roxanne miss their catio in the old house and our new house needs one. You've given me many ideas!
My my Jackson... sooo dignified. Lovin the jacket and that accent!!!
!
Jackson dresses “Gone with the Wind”. “Frankly Deer I don’t give a damn”
You are sooooo funny. You do this with a straight face & calm eyes. LOL. LOL.
I have moved from a house that had a pet door to a screened catio. I guess I will have to build a new catio😅. Our new house doesn’t have a catio .
Purrrrrrfect setting for the felines to have their morning tea & crunpets😄
UNCLE JACKSON DO YOU LIKE GARFIELD OR ASREAL ? BOTH ARE ORANGE CATS. WHOM CATS BELONGS TO….
A catio is not really a option in my condo s instead my boy gets leashed outing on my patio and has a shelf at every window.
My babies have a catio our balcony that has been made safe for them
I really like Bob's & David's catios! They are simplistic, functional and I might be able to do this!
This is a beuariful video and I truly appreciate the inspiration that I can use one day for my own babes when we get a house. 💖
I can not wait to make a catio for my (almost) adopted 3 kitties. I need to design it. I will be building it next spring.
Bach is amazing. His Brandbenburg concertos are some of the best in baroque ever
What a great video! My catio is built but not "furnished" with its ramps and stuff. This has given me absolutely tons of ideas!
