The problem is useful animals don't go extinct. As much as you or I don't like it if an elephant can replace a tractor then it's gonna increase the chances of more elephants going forward.
I believe the Elephant is so gentle because: ¹ It knows that this is a small human, and would probably draw association to an elephant calf. ² It can sense (See, Hear, smell and feel) that she is no threat, and projects a "happy" energy. ³ She brings food.
Elephants are actually known to be pretty empathetic, even towards adult humans if they’re not threatening. There are multiple stories of injured humans being guarded or even carried to safety by adult elephants. It’s incredible.
And the final reason is because it knows that if it so much as make the baby cry, even if their protecting themselves, suddenly it will be their fault and they will most likely be shot on sight. When it comes to human babies and animals, it's play along and survive until the parents either take away the baby or carefully try to get away where the baby can't find you and get you killed. 😐 But that is only for the animals who are simply tolerating the child's existence, some don't mind and are cuddly about it 😊

Yes, at the time this was recorded the elephant was really calm and content, so the child was definitely safe around the elephant. However, we need to bear in mind elephants(male elephants particularly) can be temperamental during a certain period of the year where they go through musth, and can be dangerous to approach unless they are treated with traditional or modern ways to calm them.
@@missingcasey You need to ask the vet. I can speculate meds like Valium, etc. For traditional herbs, you need to ask the traditional vets that are specialized in treating elephants in that part of the world. There were some in Sri Lanka. The mahoots and Buddhist monks also have a certain way of chanting as well, but I don't know how effective that is with an angry and frustrated male elephant in his peak of musth. These days they prefer to tie up the elephant and let it pass, which is not a good way to 'treat' it. The best way(I think) is to allow the elephant to mate. But, that is not that practical with a "domesticated" elephant.
The Elephant is a working animal much like a horse of ox. It appears he's cared for and can we appreciate his bond with the child. We get pretty judgy here dont we

That is a domesticated elephant, it has been around people its entire life. They are great for a hands-on elephant experience. The man's voice you hear is the mahoot (trainer) and he is giving the elephant verbal commands. Elephants love bananas, pineapple, sugar cane, and other sweet fruit. Wild elephants are very dangerous and unpredictable and they are capable of turning over a tour bus or stomping a Mercedes flat. We have lions, tigers, bears, and elephants here in Thailand. If I'm riding my motorcycle and see wild elephants, I turn around and go the opposite direction. If I see a mahoot moving his elephants on the road, I pass slowly on the opposite side of the road. Elephants and gorillas have about the same mental capacity.

³ She brings food.
