I see gold and silver mostly as a recession hedge, not an inflation hedge.
Most investments hedge against inflation : stocks, real estate, I-bonds, farmland, you name it. Metals are nothing special.
Metals aren't even that good as an inflation hedge. If you bought $40 silver in 2012, you're definitely not beating inflation.
But only gold and silver do well when the economy sucks.
