- In this video, I show you how to forge a collar and to complete forge welding collars. If you want to learn more about blacksmith collaring, this video covers the basics.
Calculating Material Needed for Collars (Excerpt from Lorelei Sims' "The Backyard Blacksmith" page 101)
(Thickness of material to be joined x 4) + (Height of material to be joined x 2) + (Thickness of collar material x 2)
Example: Let's say you have two scrolls that you want to join with a collar that is 1/8th inch (0.3cm) thick. The scrolls are made from 1/2 inch (1cm) square stock.
(1/2 x 4) + (1/2 x 2) + (1/8 x 2) =
4/2 + 1 + 2/8=
2 + 1 + 1/4 = 3 1/4"
Your collar length should be 3 1/4 inches (8.3cm)
COMMENT: Have you tried forge welding collars? What have you used a forged collar for?

I remember doing this in my first year of blacksmithing classes. This was probably the single project that gave me the most trouble. You make it look easy.
you're too good at this
Great idea! Thank you and God Bless you guys!
Good quality material
Excellent work Roy, these videos are always informative, keep up the #goodcontent !
So you're not gonna show us the finished product? Come on Roy, just sat through the video to see how you guys do it over there and never got to see what it looked like. You do it differently to how I do them and really wanted to see the difference.

#good quality content here, and great videos. Keep up the good work
Wow!! that is a cool weld, you do make it look easy. Looks like that could be a bolt head if you needed a really long bolt. (#good quality video, #good content) Wayne
Historically before commercial made bolts were readily available, they were made this way, they can also be made as a mortise and tenon and forge welded that way as well.
#good quality content. Keep up the great videos

#goodqualitycontent
Thanks for the lessons Roy
#GOODQUALITYCONTENT as always keep up the great work
Also if a swage block is not available you can use the step at the horn of the anvil to hold the collar while welding
If you could teach a cat to forge, now that would be world class entertainment.
# good quality content. Would it not be easier to multiply diameter of the bar x Pi and add 1/4" on each each end of bar? than do the complicated looking formula that you show from Loreli Sims book? Haven't made a forged collar but did something similar to make a through bolt, did a tenon on the end of the rod slipped a square pc over the end and hammered it shut at a high heat.
Anyone else say "oh no!" When the collar slid back? Haha
#googquiltycontent. Thank Roy
Nice #goodqualitycontenthere
#goodcontent #goodqualitycontent I would like to know how to manage the coal and coke fire efficiently for welding. My brake drum forge may not allow enough volume for a good reducing fire, so I may never be truly successful. Roy, do you have content already that shows fire management? Maybe another camera angle would be cool? I liked hearing you say, “I can’t see the collar or the shaft (same color as fire) they are at a good welding heat.” Can I assume that if I can still see them - the material is not hot enough to weld? Thanks!!

#GoodQualityContentHere Always Enjoy Christ Centered Ironworks productions... useful, family friendly and easily understood
#goodcontent but cat videos are rad too, Roy! ;)
#goodqualitycontent
Why not weld it in a half round swage?
If you have one yes, by all means, do so. I don't see why not.
Simple? You're talking to Rob here...bwaahaa
Oops #goodquilitycontent
Roy, the political ads are a bit though to take. See if you can opt out.
