  • The tanto -- or Japanese self-defense knife -- comes in all shapes and sizes. In this video American blade smith Walter Sorrells gives an overview of this blade type while showing several blades he has recently forged.

    you're not only AMAZING at making all kind of knives and small swords, you're also pretty good at editing, and inform us about good ways to sharpen a knife or just choose the right steel for the project. Thanks for that, man!

    Thank you for taking the time of teaching how you forge all the pieces you manufacture, Since I was a kid i've loved all types of japanese blades fom a collectors point of view (all of my knives, sowrds and folding knives just hang on my walls) With all the videos you upload you show how well you know your job and , and all the knowledge you have. Sorry for my english but i wanted to show you my appreciation in your own language since i'm from Spain i'm doing my best so forgive my mistakes

    I hope my next tanto looks half as good as one of those. Actually I'll be overjoyed if it doesn't crack when quenched, which is what happened to the last two...
    I've been studying tanto a lot recently and while there are lots of different blade styles, but they do seem to mostly have a fairly constant width to length ratio. To my eye at least.

    a point also to be noted is that in the first few hundred years in the battlefield days of japan, the tanto, like daggers in europe were essential to samurai wakizashi on the other hand were not typically carried onto the field, it ewas simply the sword, whether tachi or uchigatana, and tanto.. the dagger was essential for samurai in particular since a lot of combat between armoured fighters very often will turn into a contest of grappling and dagger fighting to pierce the gaps between, and areas not covered by the armour (we also see an almost identical tradition of armoured dagger fighting in the knightly combat manuals in europe

      +john smith Why does everybody want to see somebody make a karambit? lol I swear, I always see this same distinct request for youtube makers with 1000s of subs. If you do a quick search on youtube you'll find a few guys who have made them. I honestly just don't understand the fascination with them myself. I know in a certain martial art they have their place, but imho, for the "most part" they just seem kind of "gimmicky", no offense. :)

    often overlooked item the old tanto, great video :D
    I kind of like to carry a smaller version of that on my person if I'm out anywhere on foot, (guns aren't a common thing here) never had to use it, touch wood, never will, I just feel better having it, kind of a "just in case" thing, which I guess is why they were made to begin with.
    So, I guess you'd know a lot more about this than I would, a lot of factory knives call the angled chisel tip a "tanto tip", but was that really a common thing? or did they tend to have the more rounded point you showed?
    I guess it could change over time like any other fashion.
    Also, given that carrying around something the size of a Bowie knife is likely to get you strange looks in the modern era, how small do you think a blade could be and still be considered a tanto?
    What makes a tanto a tanto for that matter?

      +Some Guy The "tanto point" was not commonly used. That term was just applied by one of the big cutlery companies to that particular grind. Spiderco, maybe? I forget.

      As far as i know a tanto blade is around 8 to 12 inches long

    Back in the 90s one could buy some pretty good tanto knives.....not cheap if you wanted a nice one....but one day just disappeared of the market never to come back....

    I would have appreciated if you stated what type of steel it is. Is it san mai, warikomi or monosteel? Also why you chose the hamon you did as well! What Rockwell hardness is it at too? Will you answer these questions? I practice MJER and shinkendo, so I may need a new shinken soon. Lastly do you create shinken to customer specs? Either way thanks for keeping the way alive!

      from his other vids I'm pretty sure he uses two high carbon steels, one higher and one lower, and folds them to get a suttle wavy pattern in them, or at least that's how he made them in his previous videos

      +Herb Toker He sometimes uses steel he's made himself also. As for does he create a piece to customer specs, contact him and see your options.

      +Herb Toker These three were all made from folded modern steel -- 1095 and 1050 or 1050 and W2. As some other guys mentioned, I do a wide variety of different kinds including ones made from tamahagane and monosteel. You can check my website for info on custom blades. Thanks!

    Islandblacksmith makes some even smaller blades in the traditional Japanese fashion. They look like you just cut the tip off of a tanto!

      Primarly intended to use on restricted spaces like a tea house, grappling or even on a very messy battlefield. Unlike the people believe, Samurai was a very expensive warrior to be trained and dai myo class doesn't incentive suicides among them.
      But yes, just in case of seppuku, you use a tanto or wakizashi and your buddy take position over you with your katana, to cut your head off and save your honor if you can't make it. But these swords are not built with this intent.

      +LandShark 7.62 My understanding has been that the (true) tanto tip more readily pierces armor. It seems that a few blades he shows (based on my understanding) are more accurately drop points (or at best, what I would call pseudo-tantos), not true tanto styles which have a much steeper angle. I concede that this may be base on a western interpretation as he states tanto styles (in Japanese culture) are based on length. So, I guess iit depends on whether you are talking about modern knives and tip shapes or you are referring to classical Japanese styles.
      I have experimented with tanto tipped knives (a tip that is steeply angled to the belly) in the past, punching them through steel drums vs various other point styles and have found that the tantos greatly out perform other point types for penetration and have never since questioned the theory that they are made to more readily puncture armor. Nearly all my defensive knives have since been of the tanto style (for the last 15 years now)

    I'm curious how this elegant blade profile became associated with the contemporary mass produced tacticool "tanto" shape (acute point, no transition to straight edge). I personally can't stand that shape, seems like it was drawn by a twelve year old or to expedite mass production, not for any practical advantage for the user.

      I might be late, but I imagine they get associated with tacticool stuff is because of pointy/edgy looks, since the real tanto(Tanto isn't actually the blade shape, but rather just short sword from the Heian Era) kinda looks like a long kitchen knife, which the americans thought would be boring, they "spice" it up and call it a japanese thing when it clearly is not.

    A tanto does not curve on the edge and a wakasashi is mor comly 13 to 18 inches and at that point is considerd a large dagger or a short shord here in this viseo u se a japanese take on a midwest drop point

    I use to think what is this it's not tanto then I did som self knife education and found out Japanese and amarican tanto this I think is japnese tanto
