Part 15: • Michael Jai White: My ...
    --------
In this clip, Vlad and Michael Jai White spoke candidly about the controversy surrounding N.W.A.'s impact on Hip-Hop. Special Ed claimed in a previous interview that the group had a destructive influence, a notion met with backlash from artists like Xzibit. Vlad agreed with Ed, recounting how N.W.A.'s music incited aggression amongst him and his friends. It was also argued that N.W.A.'s music originally intended to parody the hood with no expectation of its enormous future success. Artists like Ice Cube have radically changed over the years, going from perceived gangsters to family men and entrepreneurs. Vlad and Michael Jai White urge audiences to be discerning and to not blindly believe the personas they see on screen. They conclude by saying that many artists wanted to release positivity, but record labels insisted on promoting narratives of violence and destruction, as Ed also claimed.

I think the movie showed Ice Cube’s actual stand point from the hood, not really involved in anything crazy but just observing everything around him, like the bus scene, he wasn’t trying to be gangster and trying to stand up to a blood. I think it’s okay to come from the hood and talk about certain things, even if you’re not the one doing it, just makes for tales about the hood

It’s facts not everyone in the hood is a “gangster”. That just means you’re in a gang. Doesn’t mean that you’re soft or not hood or nothing like that.

The value of NWA's music was they were openly rapping about real life in raw words about the Black experience in the hood - especially here in LA. Cube didn't have to be a real deal street guy like Eazy to pen relatable, profound lyrics that tilted the axis of hip-hop at the time.

    • @jasonpierre6108

I respectfully disagree. Everything you said only points to one song NWA has and thats F the police. If you actually listen to their music their not uplifting their community most of their music is hedonistic. Although very talented i can still make a better case that NWA hurt hip hop with their content then uplifting it.

Cube wasnt a gangsta but hes indeed from the hood. Same for Dr. Dre. In fact Dr. Dre use to dress up wearing tight sequined clothes (and light makeup) when he was with his first group called World Class Wreckin Crew. He took on a gansta persona when he joined NWA but just like Cube he was never a gangbanger. You dont have to be a gangsta to know how to relate to gangstas and that underground crowd.

I remember Playing Marbles at McKinley Elementary School in (COMPTON unified school district) with Johnny Burns who Grew up to become Dj Quik’s Prodje’ ( Mausberg) , This is like 89 / 90 going into Vanguard Jr High around 91 and I remember some the Conversation , Some thought they were real gangstas some thought they were just making money,But because they were attached to these Neighborhoods with these (SETS)alot of us thought they were. That was like 9 , 10, and 11 years old . By the Time I was in High School There was no way you couldn’t Tell me That Suge Knight was not a Real Blood 🩸or Piru. And at Compton High School I remember a lot of Teenagers ( some were Gang affiliated)saying Tupac Had Got Put on they Hood because of what he Was Hollerin In Songs. I grew up off Rosecrans And Remember saying to my Homies at about 16 years of age “ what do Tupac Know about Rosecrans?” Although it sounded Tight as Hell to hear 👂🏿 it “🤣

One Person may find some paperwork on a Rapper, or Find out that they have no felonies , But then the Rap Artist would just Deny it . Who was going to be able to really Check it. But I will say this , When the Regular kids Hang out in the Park and play Ball 🏀 with the Gangbangers When you growing up there ,From the outside looking in , it hard to tell who’s from the SET and who it’s based of The lingo you are hearing ! I’m pretty sure Ice Cube said Cuz a time or two while in his hood because he grew up around Crips . Here we go again. We know alot of these artists do not live the lives they rap about otherwise they would be on the daily news or be doing triple life. However, some do. These are usually the local ones who do not make it very far for the very same reason. Most rappers either rap about the lives they are escaping, used to live or what they see going on around them. That's obvious. But what Special Ed is talking about is the violent and negative energy and images that subconsciously take over peoples minds and control their behaviour. West Coast Hip Hop which became alot more vivid with the success of NWA and was perpetuated through movies like Boyz N the Hood and Menace was the catalyst which made it larger than life formulating what we see if hip hop today, because it was far more entertaining and ultimately made the corporations more money. Its a deep topic which cannot be tackled through 5 minute Vlad clips but you get the jist.
