This song is named for the World Eaters Legion of Chaos Space Marines, who are known for their berserker rages and devotion to the Chaos God of blood and destruction, Khorne. This can be attributed to the accursed Butcher’s Nails which are hammered into their head and make them perpetually angry.
Bolt Thrower at the time were recording under the British tabletop wargaming miniature company known as Games Workshop, most famous for their Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 games. They were fans of these games and so were contracted by GW to produce metal songs based off of their intellectul properties. GW recognised that most of their fanbase at the time was made up of metalheads, mainly by looking at the band tees they wore at big GW events.

    • @mad0hattr

Yeah and then they became a huge company in 2002 and hit them with a shit ton of cease and desist letters lol, it's why the cover art shown here isn't the original Crimson Fist cover art that they originally got permission from GW to use. Kinda scummy.

Bolt Thrower are essentially the AC/DC of death metal - a fantastic band. I love this track in particular, but the sound of the album is something that I can't handle since the first time I've heard it. And their first album, where there's basically no sound, is one my favorite albums of theirs. If you like more slow paced death metal, I would suggest you take a deep dive into Asphyx. Perhaps start with "The Rack" from their first album and "MS Bismark" from the second one. *short pause* Dammit - now I'll have to play them albums back to back...

Hell yes! You just forced me once again to comment on a video of yours. Great selection of a band and a great reaction, too!
I can't help myself but simply HAVE to share some thoughts on one of my alltime favourite bands. ;)
While it's somewhat questionable if "world eater" is the perfect start for a journey into Bolt Thrower it is - just because of the pure heaviness of the first minutes - a good start nevertheless.
"World eater" is from one of their early records ("realms of chaos"), which in general were more raw, a bit faster ... and therefore less heavy in my humble opinion. (I do love all of their records, don't get me wrong. ;) ) And more "fantasy" lyrically, too. (Hint: Warhammer. ;) )
There's still some debate if the third record "war master" or the successor "the 4th crusade" were the turning point from the early sound (which was so new and "unique" back in the day that in some german metal magazine they were described as "hardcore" - just because the journalist couldn't find a subgenre Bolt Thrower would fit in :D) to the more polished, slower, kind of doomier ultraheavy riff massacres of their later career.
And to more "real life" lyrics, too. One of the things that I always loved about Bolt Thrower is that they constantly growl about war but you never get the impression that they could be anything but sceptical about it. Many metal bands that choose to sing about war seem to glorify it - not so BT. If I should name a single band that I suspect to be pacifist, it's Bolt Thrower. (I also suspect that these lyrics - along with the godly riffing - are one of the reasons why the german Metalcore giants Heaven Shall Burn name Bolt Thrower as one of their main influences.)
Based on your reaction to "world eater" I guess (!) that you'd love the later stuff and I therefore strongly recommend "the 4th crusade" or my alltime favourite BT track "silent demise" (the latter taken from my personal favourite album among all those gems Bolt Thrower recorded throughout the years, "... for victory").
Once again: thank you for sharing your first time Bolt Thrower experience with us. I envy you, as you still have dozens of jawdroppingly high quality tracks to explore, just from this band alone.

You should definitely check out the whole album - Realm Of Chaos, where this song is from, it was released in 89' and for the time, it was so innovative for it's genre.
The album is actually a concept album in honor of Warhammer 40,000 and all of the songs are linked to eachother in terms of meaning.
Then there are the incredibly heavy A standard tuned riffs that were barely ever heard before & an overall abundance of any sort of high frequency on the entire record.
The tone just sets down this dark, apocalyptic warfare kind of vibe, truly unique and epic.

Karl the singer of Bolt Thrower also has another band named MEMORIAM. They have a couple albums, similar style, good death metal, but still distinct from BOLT THROWER.

ahhhh, 1989, what a fantastic year for music. if you like this, check out some other great albums released in 1989: sepultura - Beneath the Remains, Obituary - .Slowly We Rot, terrorizer - world downfall, carcass - symphonies of sickness, morbid angel - altars of madness, pestilence - consuming impulse, ministry - the mind is a terrible thing to taste, the obsessed - the obsessed. and that's barely scratching the surface. hell yeah, 1989 was a sweet year for music, maybe second only to 1986...

AH. my first DM band all the way back in....92? Still love them. Give... stuff off their last album a try. A little more polished, but just as brutal. Anti-Tank/Dead Armour, When Cannons Fade, etc. Also as their bassist Jo Bench (one of the first major women in extreme metal, and a rarity in metal at all back then) Pretty much everything about Bolt Thrower is the Riffs.
one of the most consistent bands in metal. Miss em so.
