I have so many questions about this song. Are they archetypes, or just pseudonyms for some dysfunctional real world couple? How should we feel about Love being so self-sacrificing and letting herself be a doormat?

I see them as the actual concepts, and the actions they take are representing what happens to people. The young taxi driver finds love and loses it, the loners focus on their hate. Love and hate are not two different things they're the same with different reactions. You can't truly hate something without loving something. But they're both milder when together.
Hate is less destructive and love is less all consuming. They need each other

I think you got it all wrong. Love is not a female and hate is not a male. Maybe it is all about the relationship, who is love and who is hate? Maybe we are each bit of both?
