Just before Sarnia Ontario there was a truck stop with a sign at the entrance that said "truckers will be served first, no exceptions" and they meant it. I remember sitting at a table just after a family at the next table, and the guy complained that they were there first and should be served first. The waitress pointed at the sign, and continued to serve me. The food was good and the prices reasonable. The Black and White near Paris Ontario had nothing going for it but the waitresses and the food but they made up for any other shortfalls.
Smart Trucking You love trucking like I love the used car business, I bet there’s nothing you’d rather be doing I’m binge watching your videos and I’m not even a truck driver
craig porter Oh totally forgot about that gem! Absolutely one of the best out west! Besides the scenery and great people that’s the best thing in Idaho!
Thus far, I've only been trucking for 8 months. I'm partial to the service plazas in Ohio, and I like how TA usually has huge parking lots. Though, I went to the TA in Baltimore, and I had to pay just for a parking spot. I thought that was ridiculous, but my hours were almost up, and it was late, so I just paid the $10. I saw they had a hotel also, so I asked how much for a room. I was expecting something like $20 or $30. Nope. It was something like $80! I couldn't believe it. $80 for a room at a *truck stop!?* No way! I just slept in the truck. I'd already paid for parking.
James Asbury just about any corporate owned truck stop that a lot of mega carriers use as most of their drivers can’t barely drive forward let alone back trucks up without hitting any thing.
Whites truck stop in Raphine Va before it was a Petro and Lee Hi truck stop in Lexington Va, especially during the annual truck show...great story Dave...😎
@@SmartTrucking I liked the memorabilia he had all over the place. Disappointed when it went to a Petro.....keep up good videos...maybe a top ten trucker music sometime😎
The Bossleman in Grand Island is one of my favorites too. I also always liked stopping at the Jubitz Travel in Portland OR. Nice big place, good food and a lot of neat stuff.

@@SmartTrucking not for me. I have a fridge and microwave in my truck and ill stock up on food at the grocery store before my trip. I stopped eating at these fast food chains. Bringing my own food has helped me lose weight and keep me healthy.
I tell ya, I'd settle these days for a nice home cooked meal, a place to get out of the truck for a bit that's reasonably comfortable, and a nice, legit, warm smile from the lady at the counter. So many truck stops these days are in and out fast food fuel stations now.
That’s the funniest story I’ve ever heard. I had to share it on my FB page lol My favorite truck stop is the Sapp Bros in Percival, IA. Unfortunately it’s under water right now.
I loved this and it brought back some memories, especially Rip Griffin's in Lubbock. I hate the fuel stops now. Nothing romantic about any of the corporate entities. Glad I had a piece of it.
Sometimes the location boosts the truck stop 1. Little America: Flagstaff, AZ 2. Iowa 80, Wolcott, IA 3. Petro, Ontario, CA 4. Pilot, Tumwater, WA 5. Town Pump, Milltown, MT
There are no truck stops anymore, their called travel stop. And just like the name implies, they cater to the tourist, not the truck driver. You go into the convent store, they have little tourists trinkets and bobs that are aimed at the tourists. Even if the truck driver spends more money per stop than the tourists, they still aim towards the tourists. So like I said it's not a truck stop but a travel center.
Cassius Puckett While I agree with you 80% of “ truck stops “ are travel centers but there is still so pretty awesome truck stops left around the country. Now I’ll admit there are hard to come by but there are a handful still left.
There wasn’t that many family run truck stop when I started in 2000 but there were a few I stopped in... I remember a lot of them would advertise their “NANER NANER PUD’IN” on the radio. A lot of them were kind of run down and being replaced with newer truck stops, but the food was good.
Petro in Joplin, MO is my favorite. It feels like home to me. Large truck prking, nice pretty shiny trucks that you get to see at night roll thru, the inside store is nice has everything I need. And Chrome Shop mafia is right across the street. That's my favorite! :-)
Any truck stop that sells real cooked food, and not fast food sandwiches, is my favorite. I hate being on the road driving trucks, but when I meet people like this guy seems to be, it makes it a much more enjoyable experience. Thanks partner.
Triple T in Tucson. Was probably the last full service fuel island in North America. That ended a couple months ago. My personal bias says The Alamarosa in la luz nm on us 54/70, but my family built that place and ran it for 37 years.
Boondocks in Williams, Iowa. Recently closed unfortunately. Cool place to stop and eat. You could take a break from the truck and be a tourist for a little while :-)
I was just in Williams today. I stopped at the flying J and got fuel. I went underneath the overpass and on the right looked like an abandoned but open truck fuel station. Was this Boondocks?
There are not drivers like you anymore brother.I wish The was.I love the insight of the good old days.We are dying out here I’m struggling just to bring home $2k a week.
Man Tommy, sorry to hear that! And you're in what's considered to be a pretty good area for freight too! what's going on out there? Too much rate slashing?
I agree that place has great food, Showers, nice comfortable atmosphere in the drivers tv room, and most of all it's nice and quiet where a otr driver can get some good sleep
Slim Olson's,west Elko,Nv. Spent a lot of time there in the late 60's/early 70's. Always had good food, especially their steaks. We used to kid the waitresses (This was back when that was what they were called.) about the coffee pots being filled from a pipe from the shop's oil sumps, but the coffee was actually pretty good. I don't remember too well, but it seems the big sign above their parking lot said something about having 100 pumps. There were several of 'em in the West, but eventually this one became Western Village, then was bulldozed to make room for the extension of the main runway at the airport in the 90's Another was Gear Jammers, over in Carlin.small truck stop but had great food and service.Gary, the owner did all the cooking AND worked the counter. Sometimes he'd hand a complete stranger a $5 as he walked in and say, "Play that second quarter machine from the door-it's about to pay off. I'll split it with ya." And if it hit anything,he'd buy your meal for you. The guy came off as a real grouch, but once you'd been in a few times you were always a friend to you. And if you rode a motorcycle, you'd NEVER pay for coffee there. I sure miss that ol' fart.
I miss the old 730 truck stop in Cardinal ON. When Bob owned it, it was an awesome place to get a good meal. Unfortunately when Bob passed away it was sold and went down hill in about an hour, then burned down lol
I nominate the Blue and White truck stop on East Washington Street in Indianapolis, which is long gone. That place had the distinction of not only having the world's dirtiest shower (just one shower that hadn't been washed in 40 years) but also the best hot roast beef sandwich. I used to stop there in the 1970s.
The old Rip Griffin is now called Yes Way. Yes Way has taken over a number of the old "Mom and Pop" places!! The food is still good there but the restaurant is only open from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM!!
This SAP Bros truck stops are really good since the restrooms are very clean, the restaurants are really good and a bathroom have a tush wash and heated seat!
The workmans at the Rudy exit on i49 in the Arkansas ozarks... best fried mushrooms I ever had... dirt parking lot never filled theres a loves across the street from there...
As far as my favorite truck stops are concerned I will list them though not necessarily my favorite in the listed order. These are still all "Mom and Pop" type truckstops free of the franchise label such as T/A, Pilot, or Love's. They are as follows: 1. Gee Cees Truckstop in Toledo, Washington. 2. Gordy's Truckstop in La Pine, Oregon. 3. San Paso Truckstop near Atascadero, California. 4. BJs Truckstop in Rock Island, Washington. 5. Big Country Truckstop in Merkel, Texas.
The old and long gone Fifth Wheel in Grimsby, ON. The food was pretty good, but the dining room overlooked the lake. On a clear day you could just make out the Toronto skyline, and you could sit and watch the lake freighters and pleasure boats out on the lake. It was a great place. I was always amazed that the place was even there on that beautiful lakefront property.
How about the one off 167 in Bald Knob Arkansas. Straight small town America. That little country cafe across the street for breakfast in the morning. All the 100 year old farmers holding court over cups of coffee the stocky waitress with a super thick southern accent. Was ready to go back to sleep after that breakfast. Ahh good times
Ya lets say you're running from St Louis to Huston you'll go by it. That cafe is great the food is amazing and really I can't believe how cheap it was for the portions and quality of the food. And the farmers. No kidding with the overalls and dirty old straw hats talking about the price of feed and seeds and there tractors. I swear it reminded me of a Norman Rockwell painting
There was a little place in a Shell station on old 6 just north of the 401. Only room for a handful of trucks but the food and coffee was great. Best peameal sandwiches around.
I-84 around mile 327 in Durkee I learned of a little truck stop that isn't anymore. I like to call it the Durkee truck stop for lack of any better name. Now it's just a large gravel space for parking with no amenities. I'll stay the night there from time to time when I'm in the area and tired of the hustle of Pilot and Love's. One thing is for sure, lot less likely to get hit by another truck backing in next to me, and my reefer doesn't bother anyone when there's no one around.
I-94 Osseo, Wisconsin, there is a restaurant right off the interstate (family restaurant) is the name. Home cooked meals! That food is so delicious, I always stop when I'm on 94
It’s hard for me to pick just one but up in your area I always enjoyed the food at the 10 Acre Truckstop in Belleville Ontario. This was back in the mid 90s. Thanks for sharing, enjoy your channel. Ole Double D here, from down in Georgia. Always liked going to Canada.
TA in Holbrook, AZ has good food. Petro off I-12 in Hammond, LA is pretty nice. Baker City Truck Corral in Baker City, OR. Jubitz in Portland, OR has a good restaurant. There’s a few others.
You ever encountered truckers blocking fuel islands by just parking their truck and walking inside a truck stop while they’re getting fuel and making the other truckers wait forever?
Bosselmans is still family owned. Grandma Max's restaurant is now called Thunder Road Grill. My grandfather became friends with Fred WAY back when the original Baseman & Eaton was on hiway 30 on the eastern edge of Grand Island and is still there but renamed Pump and Pantry along with their chain of gas stations. They just opened another Bosselman Travel Center in Garden City, Ks on Thursday l believe.
Boss I love all your road stories. I remember huck's and Boselmans from the road but the shell you spoke of was in Kalamazoo I spent many nights there and a kid . Kalamazoo is my hometown .
My top 5. 5. Uncle Pete's. Lebanon, TN great food and service. 4. Little America. Flagstaff, AZ go to campground next door to the steakhouse and you won't be disappointed 3. Choctaw Travel Center. Durant, OK take the shuttle to the casino across the highway. 2. Boise Stage Stop. Boise, ID. Best variety of food and it's all good. Movie theater with recliners. 1. Jubitz. Portland, OR. Good food and craft beer.
I've hauled many loads of fuel to RIP Griffin's, in Lubbock, Texas. Then he started hauling his own fuel to his several gas stations, in Lubbock. The truck stop is still in operation.
I am from Lubbock TX and grew up in a peterbily 379 it's sad to see rip griffins gone another rip griffins I have a lot of memories at is in limon colorado
The Abbyland Truck Stop in Curtiss, WI and the Bosselman in Grand Island, NE. Abbyland is out in the middle of nowhere, very quite and great food and family like. And I love Bosselman for having easy parking and the awesome steakhouse. But I think my favorite is this little truck stop in Dumas, TX. I believe it’s off of 287 in northern Texas and it’s really more of a gas station instead of a truck stop but it has a great steak house that I absolutely LOVE! Definitely worth the stop. As you can tell I’m a sucker for a good steakhouse, no fast food for me.
Dysarts in Bangor Maine, pumps your fuel, cleans the glass, and has good food. Jubitz in Portland Oregon, Truck World in Hubbard OH, Frog City truck stop in Rayne LA all have good food and a bar for those who like to wet their whistle.
LOL Warrener driver in drag, LOL. Mercy! Just so people know I don't care how folks act and dress, that's up to them and their maker. But there was a time when it was way out of the norm. Yeah Rip Griffith in Lubbock, TX. was pretty good. We hauled into Lubbock out Carlsbad N. M. and had breakfast or lunch after we unloaded salt blocks then, if we was lucky, we would get something back into Southeastern N. M. Way back in the 70's. Rip had that one in Lubbock first then opened one in Big Springs, TX. It was a good step up from the greasy spoons from yesteryear. Thank you for another good video.
I really liked the Skelly truck stop in Jolly just outside of Wichita Falls Tx. The Hub in Bell Fouch South Dakota had great steaks, The Big Bear truck stops in Montana had great omletts this was 30 or so years ago, Now days most truck stop chains just have fast food joints .
JJ's in Benton Arkansas I-30 Exit 106 is pretty good. Homemade food and homemade deserts little old truck stop wouldnt know about it if you didnt already. Big parking lot too
I don't run otr but a few of my favorites were I'm from is big boys in kenly nc and the Simmons travel plaza exit 8 in emporia and i also like davis pretty good up there in stony creek va
Starting with my least favorite: I-55 truck stop in Chicago. My favorites are: the phillips 66 rest area/truck stop on I-35 in the middle of the Kansas grass plains, the "moasis" truck stop in Little Chute, a little North of Neenah, WI. Any Kum & Go truck stop lol Roady's bp Kenosha, WI off 94. The truck stops at either end of the Mackinaw bridge And there's one in Homestead/Miami that has great cuban sandwiches, close to Costa farms. Then there's a truck stop across the street from the Indiana Grand casino/horse track -the T/A in Charleston/hurricane WV.
Ive stopped at smaller truck stops. They are less crowded and cheaper prices. They parking lots are usually dirt lots and gravel with holes and there's always some kinda restuarant with great food. Only thing I've noticed was the restroom are horrible. I'll rather crap outside. I was at one Jay bros in overton,ne (I-80) Good little spot but in the right hands can be a great spot. I've notice too foreigner own or run them and they don't invest in up keep. Great video
Should say, five best; from 30 years ago

I-94 Osseo, Wisconsin, there is a restaurant right off the interstate (family restaurant) is the name.
Home cooked meals! That food is so delicious, I always stop when I'm on 94
Good to know, thank you!
Thanks Double D!
I like the Boise Stage Stop
Yup, it was good!
Stamart in Fargo....my favorite.
Boss I love all your road stories.
I remember huck's and Boselmans from the road but the shell you spoke of was in Kalamazoo I spent many nights there and a kid .
Kalamazoo is my hometown .
Thanks Dave that was funny. Alot of small places seemed to have really good food. Now chain restaurants thanks!!!

I've hauled many loads of fuel to RIP Griffin's, in Lubbock, Texas. Then he started hauling his own fuel to his several gas stations, in Lubbock. The truck stop is still in operation.
Good to know! Thanks!
Pic at end of video is Haunting!!! 😜
The armadillo
Daniel Rosser The one I’m talking about is called Toot’n Totum.
I googled it the one in Michigan was called pioneer truck stop
I am so old I remember 4 of them lol

Ah Jerry, you cracked me up! Thank you!!
Dysarts in Bangor Maine, pumps your fuel, cleans the glass, and has good food. Jubitz in Portland Oregon, Truck World in Hubbard OH, Frog City truck stop in Rayne LA all have good food and a bar for those who like to wet their whistle.
Saw a Big burly guy wearing a kilt a truck stop in Wisconsin in winter.
Scary!
Im from Michigan and spent a lot of time at that truck stop in Marshall and it was awesome
JJ's in Benton Arkansas I-30 Exit 106 is pretty good. Homemade food and homemade deserts little old truck stop wouldnt know about it if you didnt already. Big parking lot too

I haven’t been there in a long time but, I used to really like the truck corral off of 84 in Oregon.
Hearing that from a few guys!
Fort lupton and iowa 80 are mine
I don't know if this is right but I liked the Baker corral in baker city Oregon. I also liked muralts in Montana.
Taylor's State Line Truck Stop in Neeville, MO is great.
Good to know! Thanks!
Being from Iowa the boondocks in Williams which was just closed that was a great place to stop
Starting with my least favorite: I-55 truck stop in Chicago.
My favorites are:
the phillips 66 rest area/truck stop on I-35 in the middle of the Kansas grass plains,
the "moasis" truck stop in Little Chute, a little North of Neenah, WI.
Any Kum & Go truck stop lol
Roady's bp Kenosha, WI off 94.
The truck stops at either end of the Mackinaw bridge
And there's one in Homestead/Miami that has great cuban sandwiches, close to Costa farms.
Then there's a truck stop across the street from the Indiana Grand casino/horse track
-the T/A in Charleston/hurricane WV.
Great video
