      @@MrTrdsmi Or you could just make the beef jerky yourself. You could enjoy the process, save money and keep yourself healthy as well, if you don't decide to eat all of it at once. You don't even need to hurry up on eating all of it because even homemade beef jerky lasts for a couple months if it's stored correctly.

    Note, he says he has 3 lbs of jerky at the end. I think he means he bought 3 lbs of meat, dried it surely weighs much less.

      He says it like he doesn't know the difference, but I'm sure he does. But think about it: He paid $4 a pound; that's $12 dollars. Then he put in the work to make it, along with a little cost for the flavors. Remember also how thin his meat was sliced. So, yeah; he saved some money, and even I could see myself doing this, but it's not all "DAANG" like they make it out to be.

      @@cubicinfinity Beef is 75% water. So, yeah. Dried, he may only have 12 ounces of dried meat. Still, a dollar an ounce is a lot less than jerky, which clocks in at near $3-5 per ounce. Spices are expensive. If we throw in maybe a bottle of vinegar, some honey/molasses, and the spice, maybe your talking another $6 of ingredients?
      So, he is at about $1.50 per ounce in materials, whereas purchased it is about $3 per ounce. But if you get a big bag, say a one pounder from Jack Links, it is $1 per ounce.
      I still find this idea of home made jerky interesting and fun, though.

      @@furtim1 $3 per ounce? Where are you shopping? Walmart brand jerky is $1.14 an ounce for a 6 ounce bag, less than $1 per ounce if you get the 10 ounce bag. Jack Links is a bit more expensive, maybe $1.34 per ounce for the 10 ounce bag, but that's not too surprising.

      @@mr.dr.kaiser4912 The guy said "gas stations", not "Wal-mart". However, if we stick to wal mart, look for "no man's land beef jerky". It is $5.39 per ounce. (It is also great jerky). I know that seems crazy expensive (it is) but the jerky so dry that almost all the weight is meat and it is a long chew jerky. A lot of the other brands you can eat like bacon. Most are so soft, and you go through a bag in like 10 minutes. No man's land takes a lot longer to get through.

    Iv actually made a couple batches of my own jerky and can’t stress enough on just how much better it is than store bought jerky and honestly I might just go buy me a couple pounds of beef to make another batch it’s so good and the aroma it leaves in your house if you use a dehydrator is just heaven

      Local place of mine used to sell 8ox for $8.99. Eventually went up to $9.99. Was still worth it because it was REALLY good. Original owners sold the place due to age, within first year, same bag was then $19.99. No thanks

    There is a guy in my town who started selling his beef jerky out of a little store front and he had a few dehydrators. His jerky looks a lot like yours but even thinner and crispier. It’s so insanely good. You don’t have to chew it because it melts in your mouth. He kept getting bigger and bigger and now he’s in all our grocery stores too.

    No matter how people want to break down the cost. Price of Spice's, the time to marinade the meat and loss of weight do to the dehydration process. And the drive to the store. It tastes better, it is healthier for you, you can customize the flavor to your personal tastes. And not to mention the fact that you are not throwing away all of the plastic bags it comes in. Plus that small bag is one of the cheaper brands that you can buy. P.s. the two of you are a beautiful couple.

      I agree with you. Similar thing with Blue Bell Icecream. I can make icecream but it dosen't taste the same and it requires labor, ice, salty , ingredients etcetera,,,
      Why go thru the hustle when I can drive down to the store.
      Fair amount for a few bucks.
      Beef jerky is one thing dont purchase anymore and have replaced it with 'Cesina' , Mexican dry meat' . It's a bit expensive but taste,quality and larger amount makes up for it. I guess what I'm tryn to say is yes!

      @@jetstreamdefalpha5411 I made my own ice cream. Holy carp is it time consuming, especially when you use a metal bowl and have to constantly freeze it and churn by hand. But it was the best damn tasting ice cream I ever made.

    Never in my life and I’m over 40 years old; did I ever thing of how beef jerky was made. I just bought the stuff from the store and snack on it. To think I always smoke briskets and I never knew. Time to experiment...great video!

      I basically don't buy beef jerky from the store anymore. I just make my own now. Yes its a process, but 1. its satisfying making your own. 2. its way cheaper and you get more. and 3. TBH yeah I think it taste better and you get WAAAAAY bigger pieces. I think I make around 40-50 'sticks' of beef jerky every time I make it for like...$25. If you don't have a smoker; although it is better, the oven with baking sheets at 170-180 degrees for 8 hours works just as good or a dehydrator. Salty tales recipe is basically the same that I do but the prep is a little different sense I use the oven. Let me know if you want some tips for prep or what meat I use.       @@easysteezy58 Sure thing. So the meat that I usually get is Skirt steak. It has good marbling. You'll have to cut it into about 2 inch long pieces and half an inch wide(or wider if you like). Alternatively if your store has pre-cut fajita strips those work really good if you want equally proportional pieces. After cutting put it all into a 1 gallon zip lock bag. For seasoning I use Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce(I usually use the whole bottle of both 20z) garlic powder, onion powder, Cajun powder, just a touch of salt, red pepper flakes, and peppercorn with the grinder. It will all go into the 1 gallon bag. Salty Tales says a tablespoon of each, but you can just eyeball it; it wont hurt. So. Now everything is in the bag. If it isn't completely covering your meat; Add a little bit of water. Give the bag a good shake and mix everything together. Then let it sit overnight. Feel free to shake the bag around again to remix everything after a couple hours if you want. let it sit for 14-24 hours in the fridge. I've done both and they've turned out the same. So now we're onto the next day. Should have a baking sheet ready or 2. Take your bag out. You are going to want a decent work surface and a towel that you really don't care about. Lay the towel out and start putting the jerky onto. I use one half of the towel to lay the jerky out and the other half to fold over them and press into them to get moisture out. Now you have a jerky towel :D. After that I just preheat my oven to 170. Lay the jerky on your cooking sheets(make sure you have just a little bit of space between each one) and put them in the oven. You do have to turn them over every couple of hours or so and dampen up the moisture that you see coming out, but yeah that's it. Sorry it was a long reply haha. Hopefully that will give you some good tasting jerky that not only tastes good, but is that rough jerky that melts in your mouth but also stays chewy before you actually finish the bite. EDIT: the cook time should take around 8-9 hours EDIT:EDIT: Also don't dump that marinade in the bag out. That is some of the best shit to use for chicken/pork/steak. Let your ribeye sit in that for an hour or two before you cook it on the grill *sploosh*

    Just tried this in the oven (70°C / ~158 Fahrenheit for 3,5 hours) added some liquid smoke as suggested and the jerky turned out amazing, so impressed with how great the marinade turned out.

      Boycotting is not buying their products. It's called free-market capitalism. The beef jerky is worth as much as customers are willing to pay for it. So the price is set like that. If they couldn't sell it for that much, they would lower the price. And guess what? If you started a beef jerky company, you TOO would want to earn the most money people are willing to pay. What are you, a price fixing communist?

    when i went on a keto diet i relied heavily on beef jerky and realized this after i bought 1 bag.
    i also just started making my own and even after the meat lost 2/3 of its weight from dehydration i came out with somewhere like 10 $ per lb for ingredients. i didn't factor in time and equipment. so you can save about 20$ a lb and cut out a lot of the preservatives and chemicals by making it at home.

    That's why I buy from local meat shops that give you a massive bag filled to the brim for like 2 bucks. Most of its left over meat from hunters that work there but it's honestly better than the store stuff with all the preservatives.

      Still has the preservatives most likely, they tend to soak it in the nitrite salt before dehydrating regardless of operation size.

    2:24 if its dehydrated the weight you paid for isn't the weight you end up with...so unless you know what the end result of $5 worth of beef is dehydrated it doesn't matter.

      dehydrating beef is on max 40% of weight. in germany you pay around 4€ for 40grams. eye round is 12€ per kilo. so around 100g for the "40g"-pack is 1,20€. and they get their beef and everything even more expensive than consumers do. so the price is ultra expensive.

      On average, 3lbs beef results in about 16-18 ounces of finished jerky for me, using a proper dehydrator.

Of course he paid less than beef jerky in the store if all you're counting is the cost of the $5/lb beef that's $0.78/oz after drying, that's what I said already. But now factor in the cost of the seasonings, the $100s in kitchen and grilling equipment, and the labor spent to prepare it. The honey and Worchestershire sauce alone add $0.16/oz and that looks like a $400 grill not counting the cost of the pellets to keep it running for 5 hours. You can still save some pennies if you're frugal but remember that if you had to comply with FDA regulations at home it would cost FAR MORE than $1.10/oz.

    I used to work for Tillamook country smoker and I actually worked in several different departments I have seen the entire process of how everything from regular jerky , slab, pepperoni, etc is made and I can say that he is 100% correct about the quality of meat they use also that's not even mentioning the fillers they use such as TVP which is short for textured vegetable protein it looks and smells like Cheerios if I were to describe it but they use that even so they can stretch the product they do have and make even more profit

      You know what works better as a binder than Korn flakes is eggs which is more protein and heartier also tvp isn't corn flakes it's textured vegetable protein so it's not the same buddy

      @@stormyparker8465 but with egg you have to label each product as dairy in the ingredients and have caused a massive liability to that company for a product that sits on the shelf and needs to be shelf stable. You added an element that would produce bacteria count, salmonella from egg in a non cooked product, causing people to get sick and sue but more importantly you could kill someone. also egg in shelf stable product will not pass fda unless pasteurized or pickled. Dried soy is a safe protein that has the best water holding capacity and no flavor, taking on what you mix it with without safety issues. Its fun to speculate but you have no idea what you are talking about so try asking people that do and that know how to make a safe product for consumption.

    Bruh the worst part is where I use to live, one bag of beef jerky will cost you $7 to $8 per bag if you wanted Jack Links. If you got the more generic kind it would be around $5 or $6 per bag.

      Really good for stir fries too. Beef and brocolli is eye round, it's just been marinaded with baking soda for about 20-30 min to get that silky texture.

    not saying the videos bad however when he talks about price per ounce in the beginning it doesn't work because he's comparing dried steak to wet steak and if you were to dry a pound of wet steak it'll be much lighter.

      it does work, because market price is set on wet steak regardless of the processing after.... when you go to a steakhouse restaurant and you see the 12oz steak on the menu.. it was 12oz BEFORE they cooked it.

      That's why he didn't calculate the cost of his own jerky in the end. Not to forget about 3-5$ in spices and sauces und the fuel for running his smoker for a few hours. And the man hours of preparing the jerky (in my experience about 2 hours minimum) and the usage on his smoker... If you seriously calculate the cost, his jerky most likely was more expensive than the store bought stuff.

It assumes you can translate your labor into hard cash 24/7 whenever you want and that the only time you aren't working is because you choose not to. Unless you own your own business that is supply limited but are too stupid or cheap to hire additional workers that simply isn't a logical option for 99.999% of the population.
      The real choice is sit on your ass and watch youtube/tv/video game/other inane shit or cook some delicious long storage food like beef jerky. You're prepping during down time for the future which allows you to save money when you are able to turn your labor into hard cash.

    You can't compare the weight of raw meat vs beef jerky, like 90% of the weight is water which is removed from the beef jerky. Try weighing it after dehydration

      Yeah don't pull numbers out of dark places. The Japanese fish that becomes hard as wood and shaves into paper thin slices still maintains 20% of original weight. For normal beef jerky you get around half back.

      Apologies if I'm mistaken but you seem to be shilling harder than companies that have an actual financial stack in justifying the price of their jerky.

    Now that’s the easiest way I’ve seen to make jerky. I felt I needed a dehydrator some special tools marinades it took three days it’s crazy. But the way you showed it ninja I’m definitely gonna try that out for sure. Really good videos lately I like the informative videos as well as cooking videos combination of both if you’re going to inform us cook it so we can see you doing it.       Smoking and dehydrating have different results. Both are commonly used. In fact, specialty jerky stores in my area typically have a smoked jerky section and a dehydrated jerky section.
      It's a matter of preference. I personally prefer dehydrated jerky. It's tougher and an absolute pain to chew after a couple of minutes. I believe most people prefer smoked, but that is based on my personal observations and no data so I really don't know.

    Nice video! I've been doing this for over a decade now. I typically pay $3-$4 per pound of way better jerky than the pre-packaged stuff. One tip: after smoking the jerky leave it sealed in a Ziploc bag for a day or so. It really amplifies the smokiness.

    Nice video! Only issue was you comparing the price of regular beef to dehydrated beef and not accounting for the weight of the water. Not quite as much of a scam as you showed initially, but still waaay more expensive than making your own.

    $5?!? Man up here in Canada if you buy Jack Links at a gas station you're paying like $12+! That was my entire reason behind buying my own dehydrator.

    This recipe also works in a food dehydrator as well. I'll have to remember to request the meat pre sliced next time I buy it since it usually takes me 30 minutes to slice it all myself...

    I haven't made some in quite a while but even the first time I made it, it was much better than store bought.
    I made three different mixes to experiment and there wasn't a bad one in the bunch :)

    The worst thing about most commercial beef jerky is how much sugar they use. I understand for sweet flavors but even default is basically candy nowadays.

    In South Africa, we make biltong and not beef jerky. The main difference is that biltong is hung and air dried whereas jerky is cooked to dry.
    Per 100g, raw, lean beef has around ~23g protein whereas lean, dry biltong has around ~70g protein. Assuming only water is lost, the resultant weight is around 33% of the raw product. So taking the average cost of biltong (~R300/kg), you can reverse calculate back to R100/kg of raw product. Roughly allowing for labour, spices, vinegaring and profit, the raw meat cost is approximately ~R70/kg. You can easily pay ~R100/kg for lean beef here so biltong is in fact, when compared R/g protein, a cheaper form of consumption.
    Now, Jack Links is around 38g protein/100g. Comparing to lean, raw meat, that's only ~60% the weight of the raw meat. Comparing to biltong, that makes it around 33/60 ~ half as dense in protein.
    You stated that original Jack Links costs $5/2.5oz. That's $2/oz. On their website, a 16oz bag costs $15.99 or ~$1/oz. I think you might be comparing to tiny little packets rather than buying bulk which will always cost you a lot of money.
    Regardless. ~$1/oz x 16oz/lbs x 2.20462lbs/kg ~ $35.27/kg. Assuming ~R13.5/US$, that comes to R476.17/kg Jack Links.
    So new we have two prices to compare apples to apples: R300/kg biltong (can vary by ~R50) and ~R480/kg Jack Links. But, the hydration level of the meats differ. So let's compare the protein content (which is what most people buy it for):
    Biltong: R300/kg @ 70g protein /100g x 10 = R300/ 700g protein. This makes it 2.33g protein /R.
    Jerky: R480/kg for @ 38g protein / 100g x 10 = R480 / 380g protein. This makes 0.8g protein /R.
    Jack Links is thus 2.33/0.8 ~ 3 times more expensive than biltong when compared in terms of protein. If you assume your $2/oz, then it's SIX times more expensive.... Yeah, I'm sticking to biltong.
    PS: Add on the fact that Jerky has a lot more sauces and sugars added and Biltong is more "pure", I'll always take biltong if I have to choose. I do eat Jerky on the occasion as it has its unique qualities. It's just difficult to get a hold here in ZA and super expensive as per the video, especially after export costs are considered.

    I started making my own during lockdown with a dehydrator.
    It's a lot cheaper and quite fun to experiment. I made a reggae reggae batch a couple of weeks ago that was awesome.
