  • In this episode of Honesty Box, we delve into the world of Scientology with Jon Atack, a former member turned authoritarian cult expert and author. Jon provides invaluable insights into his personal experiences within Scientology, shedding light on the hypnotic techniques used, the hierarchy, leadership and origins story of the organisation. He reveals details about celebrity involvement, and explores the daunting commitment of the Sea Organisation, where members sign a billion year pledge upon joining.

I stumbled into a Scientology office in the early 80s when living in Las Vegas. I took some of the tests and listened to their rhetoric. Of course, they were down with the psychological pablam of the 70s. ( you are trying to find meaning in life. there is a road to happiness) the whole spiel. I was probably 23 and they were creepy. I didn't go back but they followed me across country as I had moved to multiple states. I often wondered how they kept up with my locations. This went on for 30+ years. Since then, I have learned about their tactics and techniques. And I found the "clear" on my own.

I went to Narconon in Monterey Cali. For drug treatment, NOT knowing it was a Scientology front. Their websites spoke nothing of the culture, until you get there and you're surrounded by hanging portraits of L.Ron. I was lost and broken, but stayed because it was so expensive, that I didn't want to disappoint my family. It was basically a ground level introduction to Scientology...I was at the center for 9 months. I did finish the program but was adamantly defiant towards the end. I think they didn't like me because I started asking a lot of questions and calling staff out for being brainwashing robots. They tried to mentally break me down. The activities you are required to participate are nothing but brainwashing techniques. I did try an E.meter. I was audited many times, and felt like I was going crazy, which they refuse to acknowledge. They had an answer for every question, and an excuse for every defiant question or speaking out. If Narconon still exists DO NOT GO THERE, or send your loved ones there....

A crisis. Everyone has uncomfortable moments in life where you seek out community or help. Medical care and education are available and yet there harder to access and expensive. Neither of those things will come with a social group, and that is the foundation of cults. The lower members are nice people they are usually lovely and mean well when they are recruiting on the street. They believe most parts of what they are teaching is valuable and that people are helpful and lovely and would thus, NEED whatever they're selling.
24:49, "They prey upon people who are emotionally vulnerable ". Everyone no matter how rich or intelligent has parts of the human experience that make them more receptive to dishonest cult members and salespeople (if we're really being honest). Recruiting and profiliatizing are adverting for the masses; convincing someone the product is better serves a function or does something that you need. Emotional needs thus, are part of our makeup and, therefore, the universal window where most people can be suckered in, under the right circumstances. It has very little to do with intelligence and everything to do with needs and, at times, our ability to be convinced that maybe although we're the happiest we've ever been that dome small part of ourselves could be helped. They get you in for a penny but don't show you the hard stuff or prevent you from leaving until later when mental and physical and financial ruin has been put in your way. This is why Scientology and so many other groups are classed as destructive cults.

8:20 This was one of the most imp questions, the e-meter (galvanometer), which is the instrument used by Scientology to create the illusion that they’re a combination of religion + science&technology.
Although the E-meter could help in detecting mental distress, it can’t detect truth. Simply imagining an elephant crushing you will make its needle fall and give a read, thus you are auditing your imagination…and that…is endless.
Ideas like an oppressive Xenu galactic overlord, implants and being possessed by ‘body thetans’ are deeply disturbing and expectedly give E-meter reads or show “charge” that needs to be handled…but it’s just not real…again, all imagined and put in your heads as the problem to overcome.
    It’s pure placebo.
The E-meter was one of LRH’s best pseudo-science tricks. People need to talk more about the E-meter because it’s one of the elements that ‘sell’ Scientology the most and what they use as ‘proof’ of their veracity and technological angle…all bs.

My parents put us in Catholic elementary and high school even though we are an atheist family. When I asked why they told me “hopefully this experience will prevent you from running off to Costa Rica and joining a cult.” I’m middle aged and have still never joined a cult. I went to a NXVIM class through my company and I didn’t stay more than 10 minutes because a woman walked in the room with sashes and we were told to call her by some word. I was there under the request of my employer but I told them why I left and told them I don’t do this self help bs and that I wouldn’t do Landmark (the second course they suggested after that executive course I walked out of). Turns out over a decade later NXVIM was exposed as a cult and its leader is in prison now. Put your kid in Catholic school and they will be able to sniff out weird groupthink in a hot second. It works. If you are thinking this company that sent me sounds like the most famous Vancouver Canada company ever- you are correct. They themselves are also cult-like although they don’t do anything criminal, a lot of brainwashing groupthink though. I only lasted working there 4 months it was so culty. Lulus are delulu.

    • @spikeoramathon

Well, it's all a matter of degree. Depending on the level of control, if you're a non-believing Catholic or Jew, your family can still talk to you (not so with Jehovah's Witnesses or Scientologists). IMO, this is what marks a cult apart from a "regular" religion - will your family talk to you if you don't believe?
A Christian, Jew, or Muslim will happily tell you all about what they believe for free, whereas you can't even find out about what's in the OT levels without either paying LOTS of money, working for the church for 80+hours a week at lower than minimum wage, or, of course, looking it up online (and being declared suppressive for doing so).
It's very easy to say "all religions are just as bad," but really, how many religions force their workers to have abortions? forbid their clerics from having even a day off without a massive guilt trip? have armies of lawyers to harass and sue the people speaking out?
Yes, the major religions have much to answer for. But I argue that it's on a scale, and while Mainstream Religion might be anywhere from a 3-9 on the 1-10 scale of Horrible Stuff Done, Scientology scores an eleven.
