Kainoa must've been so gutted. With no Stewart or Severson in the final, and with big conditions, he must've thought this was his year. But it wasn't to be. And of course he got yet another runner-up in 1997, behind Bullet McKenzie. Apparently on that occasion Kainoa was so annoyed that he threw his runner-up trophy in the trash can.
Eppo shouldn't have won that title, i remember talking to him about it and he thinks the reason he got the win is because if Mike s won again people would start to think it was riged, what a lot of people don't know is eppo grew up in the country(a long way from the ocean) and had only been body boarding 3 years when he won pipe comp.
