    1. Don't get straight to 4:00 am- but just an hour earlier over a week or two
    2. Alternate hot and cold shower
    3. Stretch or Yoga before bed
    4. Turn off main light 1 hr before bed ( no phone or comp)
    5. Keep smart phone away from bed (don't hit snooze so easy)
    6. Take measures against the cold
    7. Wear earplugs
    8. Get enough sleep- get to bed at right time for your needs (hours)
    9. Do something that makes you happy in the morning
    10. Create your morning routine
    11. Record your routine
    12. Put away your foton or make your bed.
    13. Declare publicly (social) that you wake up at 4:00am

I, for years, had to get up early for work. My desire from that experience was to wake up when I wake up and not have to wake up at a specified time. Since I'm retired, I go to bed when I'm tired and I wake up when I'm no longer tired. Getting sufficient sleep is essential to optimum health.

quick note of my own - when you tell people about something good your going to do, your brain gives you a reward, which lessens your motivation. Its best to say your doing something after you've done it for a while becausei t gives a reward for somethings you've already done. it kinda the basics of it so i hope it makes sense

In terms of the physical getting up. Train yourself not to hit snooze at your current wake up time. Instead when the alarm goes off sit up at the side of the bed for a minute. Then get up and keep moving. I gradually increased my wake up time by a half hour when I knew my work shift was changing. Turning on a really bright light as soon as you sit up at the side of the bed, and one with a full spectrum bulb (mimics sunlight) will also help regulate your body to a new wake up time. But it does go hand in hand with practicing good night time sleep hygiene. Turn lights down a few hours before bed, don't read/watch stuff that's too exciting or stimulating, etc.

Dear Samurai Matcha, This is my first time seeing one of your videos. It was funny, beautiful, interesting, & inspiring. I accept the challenge. I have no set schedule. Sometimes I stay up all night & don't sleep at all. Last night I went to bed about 7:30a.m., & was woke up at 1pm. Been up since then. After seeing this video I decided to stay up until at least 6p.m to help me get closer to waking up at four. I want to get up at 4 a.m. every day! I started to listen to you a second time, & caught your comment about watching part one first. Look forward to watching it today. I hope to try all the methods you described that I don't all ready do in addition to the ones that I do do. I enjoyed a cold/hot shower. Then I did something that makes me happy. I weeded in the morning. You're awesome. Thank you for helping people to be healthier & happier. I love the Japanese!!! Peace Brother!

Just adding to the conversation, I avoid showering everyday, for water conservation purposes. And although I know that cold showering is beneficial ( a la Wim Hof), my mind is sooo resistant to it! Replacing old habits with better ones is really difficult for me. I thought of another good idea, especially for Westerners: get dressed or putting on makeup and posting to social media. You do not want to get back in bed after because you don’t want to wrinkle your clothes or waste/ruin makeup after putting in the time after making sure your clothes and/or face look nice.
Additionally, you’ve invested the time in looking nice, which create endorphins, giving you an energy boost, making you feel happy and boosting overall levels of positivity. 😊

  • @TiffanyMaschek
    @TiffanyMaschek 9 месяцев назад

One thing I've been doing is staying on the floor right when I wake up. Instead of sitting on a soft cushier chair right off the bat after my mourning routine. I'll sit on the floor instead. Westerners aren't used to being on the floor all the time. I've been changing my habits when I started learning about some of the yogic traditions and noticed that most of the world actually sleeps on the floor and sits on the floor to eat. I've been doing lots of stretches as well. I look for places that are soar in my body and stretch those out first. If you start training your body in this way no matter what routine you do, if you don't allow yourself to get comfortable first and save comfort for the last possible moment, then your body is going to get use to the hard changes. Mostly because it will realize that your not giving it any choice. So, it relearns what comfort actually is. So, stating I'm comfortable with waking up at 4 am in the morning every morning eventually your body gravitates towards what you believe is comfortable even if its not right away. It sounds counter intuitive. But it seems that the counter intuitive ways are the ways the body works sometimes.

I have trouble getting to sleep, staying asleep and getting quality sleep. A combination of a brain that won't shut up, pain from EDS & gout, rushed of adrenaline from Dysautonomia, my body has random fight or flight responses whenever it feels like it. Because of them, EDS means a body has to work 6~10 times harder just to sit up properly, every muscle and joints works harder, constant sprains, subsides & dislocations, it creates intense fatigue too.
I've tried the usual advice, get up if you're not asleep within blah time, wait until you're falling asleep... Number 1, I can do 3 days with no sleep and pretty common to get no sleep couple of days a week. 2. I can be falling asleep but lay there hours.
I've always had trouble with sleep, from about 10, I remember being called lazy because I wanted to stay in bed, I was always tired, in pain. & some trauma which didn't help, I would be awake in the dark for hours, long hours of feeling lonely, pain, bored, ....awful :(
So now, I do something instead of laying there miserable, I keep to calm things, I might read, research something, chat online with friends, watch calm things. Even with medication I still can't sleep.
Very occasionally I'll get a 4~6 hour fantastic sleep and feel much improved by it.

I used to teach and my head was always full of school things, now work for myself and mostly at home. But if I have to be up specifically early I barely get any sleep. It's so frustrating, but not as bad as all the years I was always horribly sleep deprived, even now if I can have 15 more minutes I want it. Fatigue, pain, no sleep or even any quality sleep at all, it was awful.

I can't do morning showers, my body is too unstable and too much pain. Cold showers are cruelly to me lol, but I have something called POTS too, it can make me black out and I've hurt by body so much blacking out. Dysautonomia means my body can't regulate its' temperature.
Before I go to bed and get up I have to put my joints back into the right position. I need my phone within teach for when I can't get out of bed.

    I love waking up early.
My first tip is to go to bed early, ideally, as soon as the sun goes down or even earlier.
If you get up at 4:AM right away, this should be easy.
If you don't do this, everything else will be a struggle.
Also don't eat right before going to bed. Give yourself an hour or so to digest first.

I think these tips are ideal even for someone who has trouble with sleeping in too much like me. Depression often makes it difficult for me to find happiness when I wake up to start the day, so even if I wake up at 10am, I will be using these tips. Thank you so much

If what you say is true, then I shall try to have your back stranger! If you find it difficult to find happiness in waking up early, then do you also find happiness in your current state? If you're not happy of the two, why not do the things which make you unhappy NOW but WILL BE? I have been there and fought and crawled my way up! You have those voices, am I correct? You see, those are mere voices. Voices can speak of both truth and lie and IF YOU TRULY have such illness, then the voices I spoke of tells you lies. If you don't act upon it, it becomes the lie you believe to be the truth and live by it. "If the voices are not to be trusted as truths, then what is?" Your actions. Prove your worth TO YOURSELF through your actions. Carry out those tasks of which makes you unhappy now, but will be. Living your life to its utmost extent. DO NOT FADE OUT accomplishing nothing nor a couple of things. TURN YOUR WHOLE LIFE INTO WORTH ENVYING OVER TO THOSE SIMILAR TO YOUR CURRENT SELF AND WILL BE YOUR FORMER SELF. Best wishes!

Thank you for another awesome video! I am currently trying to keep the 5AM routine, but it is really difficult if I don't fall asleep by 22:30 to 23:00. My actual struggle is not waking up at 5AM but to be in bed by 10 PM!

another good tip is to do crossword puzles or sudoku, for people who like to play games on their phone before sleep, I am doing this now, I love sudoku, but instead of playing on my phone now I do it on paper with a sudoku book I bought, helps me get sleepy without the phone. I really l ike your videos Samurai Matcha, I am slowly trying to live more like you, I have a totaly different lifestyle because I am from big city in Brazil and I have many dogs and cats, but I am slowly decluthering my home, changed my bed for a futon, bought a little towel instead of big one, I have very few clothing and itens now, even tho I have an art hobby I got rid of the thing I dont use and am eveyday owning less, its very cleaning for the mind, thankyou for your help, you are helping me a lot to improve my life.

Hi, Aki. These are just more amazing tips. I was absolutely amazed by your Extreme Challenge 4am video and have been trying it myself since then, but I keep reverting back to being a night owl. I usually finish work at 11:00PM, but I couldn't sleep properly. Yup, I totally agree with you that making drastic changes is not easy. Ah, I will continue to keep trying though. I will! Thank you so much, Aki, for always inspiring us. I truly admire your self-discipline, which is one of the best traits I admire about the Japanese.👏👏

Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us on getting up early! It's something that I've been trying to do lately (though not quite as early as 4am) but have been struggling with. With these methods, I hope to make it a regular and enjoyable custom!

Thank you for your encouragement. For some weeks I am waking up one hour earlier which is by 6:00 o’clock. This helps me so much in my daily activity with my children. ❤
