I think the most important when waking up early is to be able to have 7 to 9 hours of sleep : i used to wake up at 4 am when i was doing my phd. Now i'm waking up around 5:30, because I do want to see my friends a little more, and most of them are only available in the evening, because of their works. Aligning our lifestyle on our priorities and daily needs is certainly important ❤ congratulations on achieving the challenge!

Minimalist Mother in the UK here -- these videos are great, and I appreciate you taking the time to do it and share your findings. What I found most enlighening was that you talked about the positive feelings that come from waking up in a positive way. I think this can be applied no matter what time of day you're waking up - getting away from the bed, the positive pose, doing something you love in the morning - those are the best take-aways!

I used to have a really long commute and had to get up very early. I did actually get up extra early to get some yoga in before spending so much time in transit and one of my favourite tools was a daylight alarm. There's lots of different brands out there but they mimic the sunrise so you wake up in your shallow sleep phase instead of an REM / deep sleep phase which is usually the reason for feeling tired upon waking. There's also settings for birdsong which gradually increases or other sounds, radio etc but the light itself is already doing the job to wake you up without even needing an audible alarm! They can also be set in reverse for sunset before going to bed. Couldn't recommend this enough!

Wonderful video as always, Aki. I really appreciated your "fun and happy" approach to waking up so early, rather than thinking of it as simply being a productivity hack. I've always cherished early morning time, though I tend to time my waking with the sunrise, so it varies according to the season :)

I have a father who has been probably one the most productive people I have ever known. One his habits has always been getting up between 4 and 4.30, in which he would exercise and do other things before the house is disturbed. He is close to 80. The FEW times I have done it , it REALLY is like a miracle hour. My issue is that I have not been able to go to bed before 10.30/11...but I still get up at 5 to get us ready for school/work. I must prioritise this for my health. Thanks for this video. I will challenge myself.

Konnichiwa!!! I also used to wake up early and go to the gym. I love exercising and the group I exercise with. Lately I lost my mojo... felt unhappy and now I spent time on social media at night... I feel even more unmotivated now and worse I can't seem to fall asleep before midnight. After seeing your happy video, I feel motivated to go back to my old routine of waking up early at 5 am, go to the gym, nourish my body, mind and soul properly in the morning. I used to love preparing healthy breakfast, reading one page of my favorite book of quotes, and do my meditation. Now I don't do any of that, I feel so sad and my feelings are heavy by watching and reading bad news at night. I realized I can do better! Thank you Samurai Matcha! Today in May 2023. I'll be back in June and let you know how it goes. :)

One can start the adjustments on a smaller scale. Wake up 15 min early for a month. The next month, 30 min. The next, 45... till you get to one hour earlier.
The first month- pick something small to do... like the pose and some stretching
The second, add another item to that routine.... like making tea also
and then keep adding small things.
This way makes it easier for your body to adjust. Maybe waking up an entire hour early is to hard on a regular basis... but maybe you did 30 min just fine. So do 30 min every day... then try for an hour on some days.

A loud coffee-maker next to my bed with the timer set at 3:55 would be the only thing I could count on, when I want to wake up at 4 or 5 every morning ...
I like getting up early, actually. But where I live, summer nights are quite bright and winter days are so dark. 4 AM is beautiful in summer, but in winter -- at 10 AM it's still not bright, we don't see a ray of sun for weeks sometimes. So at 10 AM I feel like it's time to get back to sleep, it's cold and dark and that won't change much during the day at all :D

Was one of the best life choices I made, only second to quitting smoking and drinking. Since now I live in my car, it gets too difficult in subzero temperatures but looking to star again as it is getting warmer. The key is not to bring yourself down over missed days. It's been 2 months since I stopped getting up, but I know how great my life became when I was. Do a little exercise and change your diet, form new habits, and throw out the old ones. 💪

I've been getting up at 4:30 AM for over a year and a half now. The main reason for getting up early originally was to write for a while in the morning; now I've added "learn Spanish on Duolingo" to my morning routine. And, thanks to you, I'm also cleaning my toilet first thing in the morning. The one thing I haven't managed to be happy to do in the morning is exercise. I really need to work that in, in a good way.
What I've noticed lately: when it's time to go to bed, IT'S TIME TO GO TO BED. I've always been someone who goes to bed late, gets up early, but no more. Now sometimes I'm tired enough at 7:30 or 8 or 8:30. And...weirdly enough...when I go to sleep hard and fast at those times, I'm waking up within an hour or two, wondering what time it is, and only an hour or two have passed! I still have the rest of the night to sleep! I wonder what would happen if I actually *would* get up at 10:30 and stay up until the next night's sleep. Could I get by on an hour or two of sleep?
Hunger: I'm on keto. I don't get hungry anymore. You're eating carbs. Carbs make you hungrier. If you don't want to bother with getting hungry in the morning, cut out sugars and grains (and rice is a grain).
**edit: I do sleep in on the weekends and let my body get all the sleep it wants until I wake up. During the week I plug in the phone (my alarm clock) on an outlet across the room from my bed, so that I have to get up to turn off the alarm. By then I'm already cold enough that I just stay up and don't get tempted to go back to bed. Right away I make my bed and make my coffee, write, learn Spanish, and go on with my day.
I may try cranking the time back to 4 AM for a while, just to see how that affects me.

Regarding waking up after a couple of hours in bed, you might want to look into biphasic sleep. Katie Hunt wrote an interesting article on CNN's website titled "How our ancestors used to sleep can help the sleep-deprived today".
In a nutshell, until the industrial revolution, humans used to go to bed at sundown and get up at sunrise, which was a span of 8 to 12 hours or so. People would go to bed and wake up after about four hours. In the cities, they had nocturnal pubs and coffee houses so that people could go and visit with each other for a couple of hours before heading back home to go back to bed. This biphasic sleep also allowed hunter gatherers to rotate shifts to watch out for a predators.
But when the big machines of industrialism moved in, I guess they decided they could squeeze more work hours out of us if we only slept a straight eight. But it isn't normal for us.

I was happy to see you upload a vid like this because I recently got a new job in the past few weeks that requires me wake up at 4am everyday.
At first, the idea of waking up that early was almost the deal-breaker for not taking the job, but I decided to give it a chance!! A lot of what you said you learned from your experience is also true for me! The morning fresh air, seeing the sun rise, driving around when it's dark and no one's around is all so nice!! My days is doubled definitely (even if I do take a small nap in the mid morning) and I have had energy most of the time to do things I need and want to during the day after work and have gotten a lot done for current projects of mine!
While I can't do walks on my morning time constraint, I feel like I should re-incorporate a matcha drink and/or some stretches, so thank you for the inspiration!!! Keep being you, Aki!!

I used to be the first one to get on the school bus and last one off of it. My bus would pick me up at 6:30 AM (I had an hour and a half bus ride, as it was a private school that went into various towns to pick kids up, and I lived the furthest away). Therefore, at age 7, I woke up at 5:30 AM. Ever since, even at 39, I still wake up at this time. I don't need an alarm clock. My body just does it. I feel like I get so much more done waking at that time. When people say to me that they struggle to wake in the morning, I don't really understand, since I established this waking habit so early on in my life. I am a happy person. I think it has more to do with how I choose to live my life, rather than waking up early though.
You have made a lot of great habits and I am glad that you did well in this experiment. Will you continue to wake at 4 AM or go back to a later time to wake?

Your "wake up pose" reminds me of a very similar pose I was taught by my mother called the "victory pose". You stand tall, ball up both your hands, and stretch your arms out so your body makes a Y shape, the same pose most people do after they accomplish something. I was taught this pose to combat depression and anxiety. There's a related pose of sorts that I was also taught for when you're feeling in a rut, and that's to take a clean chopstick or similar, hold it horizontally like a dog with a stick, and try to hold it with your teeth as far back as you can so your cheeks are pulled into an odd sort of smile. Turns out our brains are horrible at figuring out reality from imagination, which is why visualization works so tremendously well, and likewise by triggering these physical poses the brain thinks something is happening and tends to manifest emotion to go with it. It's odd how our brains do that.

I like the tip of having something to look forward to, comparing the morning to that on your first date with your boyfriend/girlfriend. Cute! And I appreciate the mindset. As we get older, it's harder to find those enjoyable activities that can get us out of bed. Lol.

Ah, now I know why I'm no millionaire...! Kidding aside, I could never habitually get up at 4am as I'd have to go to bed at 9pm, or 10pm at the very latest, which is impossible to me. I simply cannot sleep this early no matter how tired I am, especially not in the summer when it's still bright, warm, and noisy outside at that time. Also, my girlfriend (who has the same "owlish" body clock / biorhythm as me) would kill me if I set the alarm for 4am! ;-)
But of course I have the utmost respect for people who have the discipline to get up brutally early.

I remember I took a gap year before starting university as a young baker at 18 haha, meaning I had to wake up at 4:30AM everyday to get to the bakery at 5:30AM. I don't know how I did it for 1 year but I used to remember have done so much before 12! gonna try and incorporate that in my exam season this year.

I have to be at work at 3 to 4 am everyday. I been doing this for years. I have breakfast at like 12pm then get a nap before my other job. On the day I have fully off which is Saturdays that's my time to do fun. I try to get my shopping and stuff do in the middle of the week when I have time. I guess it depends on what type of job you have this will work.

@04:38 part of the hunger is your brain saying "this wake up time does not align with my inner clock, and I need more calories to function, to offset the difference between my internal clock needs and when you are asking me to function"
It sounds like waking up at 5 am aligns perfectly with your inner clock/circadian rythm.
4 am does not sound like it is ideal for your circadian rhythm. If you are occasionally still sleepy/needing to snack after a couple of weeks, your body is asking politely "can we please go back to what makes Brain happy?"
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, and both the way you chose to reframe your mental outset as well as where you struggled.
    😊

    • @TheUrban.Camper

You may want to review your diet. I always hear from people who try and like it, but always feel tired. Once they took a good look at what was going into their bodies, they made changes, and that was the key.

Waking up a 4am I think is counter productive. Your body needs sleep. You are depriving your body of its restoring needs. Why?

    • @vitromelo
      @vitromelo Месяц назад

Our bodies have a circadian clock. This means that whenever we sleep on the same time every night for three consecutive days, our bodies adjust and begin sending melatonin just before the time happens. People can still get the same amount of sleep of 6-8 hours and wake up at 4 AM. At this time, dawn is happening and the sun is about to appear. This gives a lot of time to prepare ourselves in the morning.
I get it, maybe some people don’t like to wake up early. Recently I do admit that i wake up late. But the times that I have woken up early at 4 AM or 5, i was able to get the things i needed to do done. Mr. Aki is showing us the many benefits of waking up early.
