Agreed. Laser first, then electrolysis for the light or gray hairs. Laser for myself was painful, but not as painful as electrolysis. Also electrolysis can take much longer and therefore can cost more over time. Thanks again Dr Z for the shorts!! ❤

Warning for those wanting to get ANY IPL laser done to them which includes laser hair removal. It is common in many ethnic diasporas to get what is called paradoxical hypertrichosis from ALL forms of IPL laser. Meaning it makes you grown even more dark, coarse hair and also in places where you Never had it before. I had to get electrolysis to fix what IPL caused. Also electrolysis is the ONLY permanent hair solution, laser itself is NOT permanent. electrolysis also I way cheaper than laser hair removal. In my opinion laser hair removal is a scam. Why would you pay thousands of dollars for a non permanent solution. And again in many it causes MORE hair growth. When I get electrolysis it’s like $50 each time and it’s PERMANENT.

I opted for electrolysis. Laser hair removal isn't permanent and actually requires maintenance, and I didn't want to risk the potential burns.

    • @elettramia6380
      @elettramia6380 5 месяцев назад

@@arfazia8069 well they can’t treat your body fully for one session. It will take several amongst several appointments to fully and permanently treat the hair especially if you want your entire body treated. For me that seems unrealistic to begin with as your entire body is a lot to treat. For me I have No issue with shaving my arms and waxing my Bikini area. I could Not imagine treating my entire body as it would be incredibly time consuming and just unnecessary. my face/ jawline is what I treat each session is typically $50-$60. I am not treating my whole body. I think it’s best to first treat the areas that bother you the most. And again to emphasize that laser hair treatment is NOT permanent while electrolysis IS permanent.

@@arfazia8069 full body treatment in one session is very impossible. You’re looking at a few years. Atleast 1year plus. OST can depend on location, salon, etc right.

I love your podcast! As an Electrologists myself, I have to agree on one point with you, yes laser can be an effective tool for hair removal for dysphoria but it’s not as cost effective or effective as you mention. I have been doing electrolysis for over 17 years and in my experience laser can have adverse effect unfortunately. It’s very important to go see someone who has more than a weekend certification in laser hair removal. Also, it’s important to know the different types of laser or IPL. It’s not a one size fits all. Yes laser can be an effective tool but only in the hands of well train professionals and that costs lots! As for Electrolysis is also not a one size fits all. Yes it’s the only permanent method for hair removal but only in the hands of a properly certified electrologist. Some Electrologists use better visual aids like surgical microscopes or surgical loupes. These tools help achieve great results quickly and effectively. I always recommend you go and meet up these hair removal specialists and see for yourself what you can expect. A thorough consultation is a must, do not see someone who will not offer a thorough consultation. It’s your body and your money, you need to know what you are investing in.

laser used to be considered not as effective, which was kinda true from what i gather. but recent technology improvements have meant that the laser is more powerful and better equipped to do the job. because prior, it had issues working effectively on blonde or ginger hair because it was too light for it to absorb the laser's light/heat. similarly for dark coarse hair on dark skin because the laser couldn't differentiate.
but now it's as you said, it is a lot more cost effective to go in with laser first, and then clean up with electrolysis. seems to be the cost effective option with what i've read from others. especially applies to the rest of your body hair if it's something you are looking to get rid of. of course, if you're rich and money isn't a problem, then electrolysis is the way to go for each part of your body.

Laser is also a good, cheap first step (if you have darker hair) to give you an idea how much congruence you get towards your authentic self (without 5 oclock shadow etc). If after laser you definitely feel more congruent, then consider the electrolysis path if you have the time/money.

I've been using a home laser or IPL device on and off for a few months, it has made a noticeable difference. With just a couple uses, effects last for 2-3 weeks. Hair still grows back but slower and thinner, making normal shaving much easier. And effects last longer when used regularly and repeatedly. I recommend it, at least for dark hair on light skin. Also, I call it the Laser Razor.
Thanks for everything Doc, you're amazing.

I 100% disagree. I paid $3200 for laser on my legs, face & neck back in the early 2000s. My legs are still mostly hair-free but everywhere else grew back. I’ve been doing electrolysis for about 2 1/2 years now on my face & neck. VERY different results and much improved around the two year mark which was what my electrolysist quoted BECAUSE I did laser, waxing, etc. which “hooks” the hair follicle. It takes about 2 years for the follicle to straighten back out to where the electrolysis needle can be most effective. If you want to get rid of facial hair, just do electrolysis.

Thanks for the info. My facial hair is dark and I tried electrolysis first and had negative experiences. In summary lots of $$$$ no results. Of course they wouldn’t recommend a competitor product. Anyhow I do have another suggestion, both seem to be much more effective after getting an orchi. While I am trying to save up money for further procedures I have found my at home laser kit to be quite effective for my facial hair despite the company’s warning. Thanks again Dr. Z your videos have always been very helpful!

How could you get “no results”???
For electrolysis you have to grow your hair out 2mm and during the process they literally pluck the hair out smoothly. There’s no way for them to realistically fake doing it, you’d see the result at the end of each session.

Can anyone shed some light on how long you wait between electrolysis sessions? I've got about 40% grays in my facial hair so I don't think laser is an option but the closest electrolysis place is a 2 1/2 hour drive away. Not sure what to do.

I had some gray hair. I went with laser because it was every 4 weeks versus every 1-2 weeks. And should be less hair for electrolysis to treat.
Ideally I would do electrolysis on my face first and laser on the rest. Then clean up the lower stuff on electrolysis. I found my non-sun exposed body parts took laser much (way way ) faster. Not sure if that is common or I am missing something.

    • @chrisellis8089

Laser can give some permanent thinning, but also isn't guaranteed to destroy the stem cells to prevent any regrowth, so areas treated with laser may actually grow back after an extended period of time. I would say if you consider any bottom surgery, just get electrolysis for that area. Also, it will have no effect on white hair.

So do you all think I should do electrolysis before starting hormones? Depending on time between sessions my electrologist is saying I'm looking at 2 to 4 years to clear my whole face. I don't think I can wait that long to start hormones. What I've learned from research is the hormones may slow down hair growth and decrease pain tolerance.
