Specifically heroes like Captain America, Iron Man, Batman, and The Flash benefit quite a bit from live action.
Captain America is grounded in military warfare for a lot of his lore, boots on the ground combat, World War 2 scale mayhem, he's is and always will be a soldier at heart, live action war film techniques work great for him.
Iron Man is all about tech and engineering when it comes to his suits, you definitely have a lot of freedom in animation with that, but grounding it with realistic metal sheen and defined moving parts adds such a presence to the armor.
Most of Batman's adventures are grounded, human to human fights, little in terms ridiculous action moves, he's a realistic non-powered human, with only his villains providing the "special effects" with their abilities.
The Flash's speed feels far more visceral when you can do effect shots like in the DCEU movies and (when it was good) CW Show, grounding that speed in relation to a realistic physical world makes feel all the more _powerful._

Animation is just the better medium for superheroes as a whole. It allows you to be as creative and wild as you want without having to worry about actors aging, contracts, and budget. It doesn’t have to worry about “muh realism” in an effort to be taken seriously and it has a far better track record of better storytelling and understanding the core of the characters and their world. From what I’ve seen, animated superhero content also tends to have much more love and passion put in into them than live-action. Obviously this isn’t true all the time but from what I’ve seen, which is a lot, it’s reigned true.

    • @davidbjacobs3598

I agree here. Even someone who seems live-action-friendly like Batman -- yeah The Dark Knight is a cinematic masterpiece pretty much, but its biggest weakness is in Batman himself. He still functions well enough for the movie to work, but he's the least interesting part of the film when compared to Joker and Two-Face. (Even Gordon has a bigger arc!) Meanwhile, Mask of the Phantasm fully deconstructs and reconstructs the mythology and psychology of Bruce Wayne is barely half the time. It's zany and whack, but also has a real backbone and isn't afraid to swing for the fences. When I think of The Dark Knight I think "cool!" When I think of Mask of the Phantasm, a part of my heart breaks.
I think the only heroes who have so far worked better for me in live action have been Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Panther. And that could just be because of the specific adaptations we have (although it may also be due to them having stronger politics embedded into them).

    • @Mr.DelicateTouch
      @Mr.DelicateTouch Год назад +11

@@davidbjacobs3598 The live-action Batman movies, specifically the Dark Knight trilogy are particularly bad about that. They constantly adhere to realism to the point that Gotham just looks like Chicago. They stripped it of all its gothic, 1940’s aesthetic that makes it a character in and of itself in favor of a boring, sterile city. None of the films since the late 90’s use Robin in any capacity even though he’s one of if not the most important part of the Batman mythos and has existed as a character just one year less than Batman. The movies either completely neglect or tone down his fantastical villains, who are often times his best ones in favor of a “we live in a society” Joker, a non Latino and Venomless Bane, a Scarecrow who barely appears, a Ras Al Ghul without the Lazarus Pit, a serial killer Riddler, and a Penguin without the actual Iceburg Lounge. Now, I like some of these takes, specifically Penguin and recognize that Riddler was well-written, but opting to not use Batman’s more fantasy based villains just so you can be taken seriously is dumb considering we have the comics, animated series, and the Arkham games that prove the story can be taken seriously while embracing the sillier aspects of the character.
Tbh, I think every superhero would work better in animation simply because you don’t have to hold back. You can be as creative, original, and crazy as you want. If you want a Moon Knight show that has the trippy, psychedelic visuals from the comics? Then animation is the best for the job. If you want a Green Lantern movie with epic space battles on the level of Star Wars, animation is the best choice. You want a Captain America movie that puts his super soldier and martial arts abilities on full display? Animation or video games are your best bet.

      @@Mr.DelicateTouch Exactly!!
On Moon Knight, some of his villains are pretty wild as well. Dude regularly dabbles in occult villains, and has one (Morpheus) who is the freakish looking dude that can control your dreams. He also fights werewolves more often than you'd expect. Moon Knight swings freely between low-key noir, occult horror, globe-trotting adventure, and psychedelic surrealism. The live-action show we got kinda skipped straight to the latter two, and imo the show suffered for it. (The noir and occult stories are also my favorites though...)
The only one I'm struggling to see work better in animation is actually Iron Man. A large part of that may be because his rogues gallery is... lacking, to be honest. He has Mandarin, buuuuut embracing the sillier aspects of THAT character risks leaning into some heavy racial stereotypes (Shang-Chi pretty much perfected the character imo, although I would've liked to see his comic book power set). The animated Iron Man stuff we've got is okay... Granted, even in live action, aside from his first movie he's always been better in team-ups imo. Come to think of it, this might just be a result of me not really caring about Iron Man as a solo hero.

Usually animation will come out to be cheaper when it comes out to be max budget just cause for live action you need special effects, a lot more CGI and to get all the actors in one place. In contrast to this animation is primarily just pictures. Sure theres CGI sprinkled in and animation will take longer but overall it would end up cheaper. I think the spiderverse movies couldnt get much better even with a larger budget.

One thing I really think Spider-Man specifically benefits from animation is facial expressions and movement. MCU Spidey tried to fix this with the "expressive lenses" but there is only so much you can do with that before it looks uncanny in live action. In emotional scenes you either have to have the mask damaged or taken off to see their emotions, animation doesn't have this problem since you can make the mask as expressive as you want without it looking off. As for movement, there are a lot of exaggerated poses and moves you see Spider-Man do in the comics that can't really translate super well into live actions.

Like the scene where Gwen and Miles literally sitting upside down a building, or them casually talking to each other while webslinging upside down thanks to their reflexes and spider-sense, or that big reveal of the spider-society where we see hundreds of spider-man just casually walking upside down, on walls ...you know, they are Spider-men.
You can't do that in a live-action movie because that would cost CGI budget. But in animation you can.

Imagine a dark Cyberpunk-genre Spider-Man 2099 animated series... damn, I would love that. The cyberpunk aesthetic of Nueva York just lends itself to a dark, gritty, yet surrealistic take on a possible future of the Marvel universe. 2099's time period is also a period very ripe with storytelling potential. A world post Human vs Mutant war where Mutants and super-powered individuals are ostracized? a corporate-led world where the police is so corrupt that they have a "shoot on sight" orders on Spider-Man on the daily? A world so bad that Dr. Doom is literally considered one of the good guys? Like come on, it's such an interesting world to adapt.

Finally someone said it, after watching the spider verse movies and spectacular Spider-Man and comparing them to the tom Holland and toby Maguire movies, animation does such a better job of embracing the character and. You can do so much more with animation when it comes to action and abilities that you can't do with live action. I think live action studios try to make the movies more serious and dark as if the movies aren't about a guy in red white and blue spandex shooting webs from his wrists. Animation has so much more potential and while still keeping my last point in mind I think it would also be cool to see some darker and more serious superhero shows and movies for some of the more serious looking and/or acting heroes from the comics. I think the potential for animated superhero movies and shows has been overlooked as easy content for kids when in reality it has potential to be popular with all age groups if done well. Animation goes far beyond Spider-Man in my opinion and could (and should) be done with many superheroes, Spider-Man very much included as I think we've seen with the spider verse movies.
Also as I start to pay attention to the live action movies more its a lot harder to believe that the actors are supposed to be anywhere from sophmores to seniors. The oldest looking people at my high school still don't look like toby Maguire.

There are shots and scenes that can be beautifully shown in animation that simply would not work in live action. Spiderverse can make Spider-Man do crazy shit and we believe it and get sucked into it because it's animated.

This seems a lot easier to say right now. I can say that many superheroes are animated well and definitely can be done better as far as being animated but there are also times where I feel like I can relate a lot less because of them being animated when some of the live action stuff can be done so well. Take batman for example the best batman movies by far were with Christian Bale and it brought a real feel to it and although I love some stories and arcs of animated batman Ive never had that same connected experience with them.

@travennnnn6407 thats fair too for sure. Im hust saying in light of how great the Spiderverses are its easy to just say that the live action isnt nearly as good too. Like Iron Man has been amazing as a live action character. So has black panther and many X-men like wolverine. But yeah I see what you mean.

Live action comic book movies/series feel limited. In the Secret Invasion series, the Skrulls are supposed to be Avengers level threat but there are no heroes present which I think is a wasted potential. The Civil War movie (which I think is good but has a limited cast of heroes) and the abscence of the F4 and X-Men (which is understandable since they had no rights for the mutants at the time). I just hope the MCU do justice to Secret Wars.

my man, i always had the same thought, in my vision, animation its like a comic book alive, the live action movies cant represent exatcly how the story is, the cgi for some scenes would be impossible and the cost to do that specifc scenes would be out of this world, they could still do it, but in animation the story can be identical to the hq, has more liberty to do complicated scenes with much effects, and the thing i think its the principal problem in movies, its that every director has their own style, so they make the movie in the form that they interpretate it, but how i said, in the animation everything can be done without problem, representing the character without problem with the essence of the character predominating to the original content.

Animation is just better for fictional franchises in general. Live action is limited by all of the constraints of real life whereas animation is only limited by the animators skill and time they have to work. Also, animation is often used in live action movies/shows in the form of CGI anyways as it’s needed in order to create things that can’t be done practically. So even in live action, animation is often better at capturing fictional ideas.

The way I see it, animation is better suited for comic book adaptations than live-action. Both in western animation with comic books and anime with manga. Both comics and animation are closely related, as both require artists to draw the concepts, characters and stories. One tells the stories in panels, the other tells it in moving pictures. On top of that, the animation artists can imagine the choreography unlike what live-action could ever possibly achieve. Imagine how the fight scenes being drawn were unlike any other fight scene we've seen, like Spider-Man vs The Spot, who can create and control portals. I'd say my favorite fight scenes, throughout Spider-Man's multimedia franchise, are from The Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon.

animation just opens the door to significantly more creative expression, live action spider-man is pretty much limited to showing what can be done by a grown man and some cgi, animation doesnt have the same restrictions and they can do so much more with the action, colour, style, movements, character designs, and literally every other visual aspect. live action is basically just a handicap on what the writers can show the audience
