  • In the 1950's Walter Dornberger promoted a 2 stage rocket passenger plane concept he called Ultraplane. This would carry passengers anywhere in the world in a couple of hours using a rocket boosted skip-glide profile.

      This is why I doubt elons 120 passenger rocket thing. What good is a short flight, even to the other side of the world, if you need to spend so much time in pre-post flight inspections.

      As an upper class transport, with dedicated terminals, maybe they get expedited customs...
      And, still faster than a 17h flight (plus customs) :)

    What's best: Ultra, Mega or Hyper?
    This is a serious question.

    • @RastaMon2121
      @RastaMon2121 7 лет назад +4

      Stefan Klass well if we look at nova, it goes super nova then hyper nova. i would say hyper is the bottom of your list then mega then ultra. thats just my logic tho

      @RAFMnBgaming 7 лет назад

      Mega Ultra Chicken.

    • @tayrannosaur
      @tayrannosaur 7 лет назад +5

      Well if we look at the etymology of the words, and how they are used today, Ultra historically meant at or surpassing some limit, while Hyper means above average or beyond a reasonable amount. Mega, in modern language, is a specific metric prefix equal to 10^6 in scientific notation. In the context of metric prefixes it's not even that big. Yotta, the largest metric prefix, is one billion times larger than Mega.

    • @tayrannosaur
      @tayrannosaur 7 лет назад +2

      My conclusion is that if we consider the etymology (which might be a little unfair since for Mega we're kinda ignoring that), Ultra wins. It would probably win if we did look up what mega might have historically been used to mean (if it ever meant anything else) since it basically means "near or even greater than what we ever thought was possible".

    2G is a bit extreme for a passenger aircraft is it not?

    • @leonardobonanno5115
      @leonardobonanno5115 7 лет назад +23

      It sounds a lot but actually during take off on commercial aircrafts 2 G's are nearly reached. By the way if I remember correctly the Boeing 747 was designed to collapse only above 4.3 G's, which is little compared to KSP but still a lot for everyday flights that mostly don't include stunts😂

    • @italialyanoboi
      @italialyanoboi 7 лет назад +3

      Id never have thought passengers on an airliner would experience that sort of force, obviously they will feel an acceleration as the plane takes off but I thought it would have only been 0.5G at most and it only feels like a lot because humans aren't used to acceleration in the horizontal sense.

    • @RAFMnBgaming
      @RAFMnBgaming 7 лет назад +19

      Don't think "designed to collapse" is the best way to advertise these things, "designed to withstand forces up to" might be the less "holy shit" description here.

    Hello Scott, the bush pilots always make a final turn across the slope when they land uphill in case the brakes fade. It is rather ignominious to see your vehicle run backward down the slope. However, this is a very fine skipper that you have here.

    the piggyback idea is kinda of an interesting idea. you could have them both have a decent size passenger compartments and have the carrier do short distance flightpaths and have the one that's being carried do long distance flights. you would have to have a decent infrastructure set up all over the world to support this. I like the idea. The one good thing about the Nazis is they were good at building rockets, but really, how much creativity could have been stifled by that totalitarian regime that wouldn't have been stifled had it been a free country like America. A lot of brilliant people left Germany to go to allied nations during the war, and alot of brilliant people were killed in concentration camps. We will never know what some of those people lost in the war could of produced. of course the need for all this creativity was spurred on by the war, if the war hadnt happen we might still be flying rotory aircraft now.

    @Scott Manley love your channel mate, but need a correction at 9:20 They're not Ailerons, they're Elevons...and shortly after that was an aerodynamic stall not a yaw effect.🖖✌

    • @agsystems8220
      @agsystems8220 5 лет назад

      They should be elevons, but they aren't. He had them set as pure Ailerons. It also wasn't a stall. Stall behaviour at supersonic speeds is very different, because most of the lift is coming from the bottom of the wing, and even if it wasn't we can see from the navball that AoA is not high enough anyway. Read up on the SR71 accidents to hear about something similar. When one of the engines suffered an unstart it would yaw the aircraft, and bank it in a similar fashion. It would also cause the aircraft to pitch up, and cause G forces to exceed the limits of the aircraft. That kind of yaw roll coupling is typical at high mach numbers.
