In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at why climate protests matters. Specifically, I look at environmental protests like the recent September climate strikes in order to understand protest's place in creating much-needed climate action. Via various organizations like the Sunrise Movement, Zero Hour, Fridays for Future, and One Million of Us, youth protests across the world are crying out to world leaders to act strongly on climate change. Greta Thunberg certainly has added fuel to this growing fire, but she's not the only climate protest leader. These movements show not only the strength and solidarity of a new wave of climate activists but the mounting pressure on politicians to create broad-based, inclusive, and transformative policies that combat climate change.

What are your thoughts on the recent outpouring of climate action protests?
Not sufficient yet, but I'm pretty sure it will get bigger
needed because we need actions from leaders
Toon Berry is a great gal hope to see her on climate protests
I think climate action protests are great but people can do more. If people will do mass tree plants and promote recycling it will also make more people aware and also make a physical difference at the same time.
Also many people could protest without even knowing what's the actual solution, I feel it's like thinking that if we protest it will solve everything but it won't. People should understand what are they protesting for and that the end of the day there's a lot of work do be done.
@@cheezenachos1770 I been saying this before the 2016 US election.
Here in Colombia, thousands of climate change activists and general social leaders from all aspects of life have been selectively murdered by the government and terrorist groups. Protesting agains building an oil pipeline might very well be the last thing you do, especially if you don’t live in the big cities
@Wesley Why does that matter? If the drug cartels do it they're still doing it because they're protecting the interests of oil companies. The only thing that changes is that the government and companies have an easier time washing their hands of this but if you believe that they're suddenly innocent because a gangster did it instead of a cop then you're a fool. In the end it does not matter who specifically caries out the killing when the end result is that action on climate change is blocked. Just because one appeals more to your stereotypes about South American countries doesn't change anything.
As an italian 17 y. old I'm RELIEVED that so many youngsters like me are taking action, protesting, making their voices heard and changing the world around us. That said, I believe, as the french philosopher Montesquieu once said, in the division of labour: I mean, every individual being ought to find himself a place and a role in society. Thus, from what I've experienced during these protests and by talking to people on the streets, especially my peers, I've realised that what is missing is not motivation or action, but a radical shift in mentality. Too many don't even know what climate change is, and that's unacceptable. So I've made it my duty in life to be the one that acts under the radar, illuminating people about the truth of science and the mistakes made by themselves and the climate movements. I don't have the possibility here on youtube to fully argue my point, but in short I see most of this "climate action" as a consumeristic manifestation of capitalism itself, which is kind of a paradox but if you really think about it it makes sense. So MY ROLE must be to instruct and get involved in scientific reaserch, also because politics would be nothing without it. I need to make people understand that they are not emancipating themeselves from the broken system unless they change their mentality. They must acheive what greeks named "autarkeia": indipendence form exterior conditionings that are not scientific. So thanks Greta and Greenpeace, but I've got some work to do that you are not doing at all.
Alberto Mattia Perronace I completely agree with your comment. I think it’s a probably too, that the protesters mindset isn’t alligned with what they’re protesting for. I support you!
I don't agree that Greta is not doing it. She is doing what she can to eeducate people. Look at speeches she held, a book that she wrote, a video she made. But that is not enough. Alot of people are not listening to her. So of course everyone everywhere have to spread the word...
@@lotta7235 I am not saying that she is not doing alla that is in her power, as I wrote I love what she is doing and let's be honest: she changed the world. BUT she is kinda like a mythical figure, that unreachable thing that just happens. She may inspire poeple, which she does, but, again, she remains a distant thing that becomes less reliable for those ignorant people. See what I mean? That's why I said we need to act under the radar: talk directly to people, create bonds with them, make them truly understand what is going on, be kinda like a homie: they will listen only to such an approach, not else. At least that's what I've seen here in Italy
The problem with focusing on science and research is that it didn't matter if the public doesn't hear it, and the politicians ignore you. That's why protest is necessary. That said.... everybody has their own role to fill. If you're interested in science, it's amazing if you can pursue that and make contributions that way.
@@KatieBadenhorst I didn't say protests don't work, I just feel like I need to do 2 things: science and talking directly to people, go around and be a "prophet" if you see what I mean
Here in Mexico, sadly I don´t see that polititians actually listen to us, even worse the goverment is promoting a policy to support fossil fuel industries.
Everywhere arround the world governments are promoting animal agriculture, one of the leading causes of climate change, destruction of nature, heart desease, world hunger and the biggest and worst system of opression of all times.

We got your back.
I'm involved in climate actions (working in FFF) in Tokyo, and I was just so fed up and depressed cos I didn't know if what I was doing was the right approach to take, preparing for the strike and the march... But this vid blew all the negativity inside me! Thanks for making this vid!! Much appreciated:)
I'm a post-starter engineer with a salary I'm absolutely not complaining about. I can save up a good amount of money because I don't need much, in the hopes of getting my own small house that I can tailor to be as green as I can make it.
Housing prices, however, are off the charts. Mortgages require double incomes (and are allowed to be funded by double incomes, hence the stupid high prices). No matter how much I save up, housing pricing is going so fast I cannot keep up with saving. That means that any savings I build up would go towards a house, if ever I get any. That means I'll have to start saving multiple years to fund the adjustments I want to said house.
And then I'm not even talking about green transportation yet.
Until such time that I could, miraculously, fund a proper green lifestyle, I'm bound to overpriced rental apartments that don't see maintenance or green investments, I'm bound to a petrol car that needs replacing soon, but I can't find a greener alternative because public transport is a nightmare here. High-rise housing is also not known for being properly green here and the transport industry is only talking about electric car this, electric vehicle that, instead of switching to fully autonomous transport-as-a-service systems that would benefit everyone.
So what I want I'm no longer allowed to afford, even with an engineer's income and rare opportunity to save money. There are no alternatives that are the green that I want and that our planet needs. My plans are set back by at least a decade, by which I'll be _required_ to invest in greener things (should I actually get a house) that, again, I'm not allowed to afford to switch to. I'm mad. Absolutely livid. Yet politics turns a blind eye and only makes things worse and the majority voters have the best interest in forking the climate over. Long live democracy.
I think the individual acts we choose make a difference too. We can't just protest in the streets, we need to also protest with our dollars. Buying things second hand instead of brand new, avoiding excessive food and beverage packaging, turning the AC up a few degrees to name a few. I've been disheartened lately to learn that most of the plastic products I put in the recycling bin are getting thrown out. It's hard avoiding plastic products but we gotta try. Reduce and reuse!
Let's make 2019 the WORST Black Friday ever! That would be a real protest!
I'm going zero waste, and I'm also a climate activist. I believe we should act on both fronts, individual as well as through protests.
If you made black friday bad doesn't that mean you deny resources of entertainment, education, clothing and more to people who need or want it? Also again maybe use Atomic power the official power SOURCE of France.
@@johnsmith6974 No actually, there's no equality in the system. In Sri Lanka nobody knows what the hell black friday is other than the stinking rich. And the poor workers here have to work overtime in garment factories here so they can supply for the black friday demands in the West. Clothes and electronic items also use up a lot of precious water resources which are free for the poor to access. Our massive consumption is denying them their basic needs.
This is the real solution, not protests.
@@TaylorQuade Why do you hate democracy?
If we want to protest, then we should go for the Hong Kong method and protest 24/7/365
Another thing to do is to either get rid of lobbying or lobby for climate action
Wait, 24 hours for 7 days per 365 days?
Dude, your videos are documentary level. Nice vid again!
Can you please do a video on #teamtrees? It seems like a good effort, but how many trees does it really take to make a difference? On a global scale 20M does not seem like that much...
Of course its a little. But unlike protest which mostly just create noise and panic, this is an achievable goal which will likely be achieved very fast. And to my knowledge, they didnt need to disturb anyone while educating the public on the importance of trees. Who knew that a group of good people working hard could achieve more than a few thousand protestors
@@erwinmoreno23 I'm fully supporting what they do, I'm just curious what effect their effort will actually have on the environment and how many more trees should be planted to make a noticeable dent in the rising co2 concentration. I think governments all over the world should invest in reforestation and preservation on a much larger scale...
Seconded 🙋♂️🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳
@@juliawirth1828 it would take appropriately 35 to 55 billion trees every year to make a real impact on CO2 levels. However, planting suitable trees for their environment is good for other problems too, such as preventing desertification and flooding.

I'd love to see a video on whether current climate based proposals would actually be effective in altering the course of climate change and whether any negative side effects of implementing said proposals would surpass any meaningful benefits.
It seems like too many climate activists jump aboard an emotional train, demanding huge sweeping changes without considering the costs (both monetarily and ecologically) and without proof that the changes would actually fix any problem at a measurable level.
I don't see many moderately educated people denying that the climate has and will change, but more often I see those who are skeptical of humans effect on Earth's cyclical climate and whether any change would actually do anything.
On the same note, it seems that many activists are very short sighted. What is the ecological footprint to local habitats of mining resources used in solar panel and wind turbine manufacturing? Is there a net benefit to forcing auto manufacturers to build brand new facilities to manufacture brand new eco-friendly power units?
I wish that more tangible environmental activism would become more mainstream instead of big issue activism that is too easy to dismiss as unattainable and too costly.
What if all these climate activists would focus their will on developing better waste management systems to efficiently recycle materials that are currently being thrown out of the use cycle?
Just a frustrated nature lover who is sad to see the over-politicization of environmental issues and the lack of critical thinking on BOTH SIDES when it comes to meaningful change.

im from germany where 1,4 Million People striked at the last Global Climat Strike. And we had a lot of Adults at the last few Strikes and even some Retired people over 70 like a Organisation translated called "Grandmas against Nazis"
Some of the attitudes towards Extinction Rebellion protestors in my home city of Brisbane Australia are disheartening. People see protesting by blocking roads as a 'terrorist-like' inconvenience. The State Government also recently passed more anti-protest laws. It seems to be a similar story around the globe. Let's not even bring up how the Australian governments are supporting fossil fuel industries for a small number of jobs for people (rather than transitioning them), and for profits for their mates. In terms of solutions, in Australia we have an independent think tank which is working on them: bze.org.au/ Beyond Zero Emissions

I was a flight medic during Iraq/Afghanistan (humanitarian veteran now physically disabled from service). Environmental activist for 28 years. Local Green Party Rep and organizer. Sustainable Systems Engineer. When I go down town to speak with the younger ones - many of them tell me or encourage me to seek elected office. Often. This makes me feel a bit awkward, since I am not the sort of person that seeks power, or to be in places of 'authority'. Never (ever) considered elected office. In my late 30s now. Any input/suggestions as to if this is something I should seriously consider would be appreciated. Or is my time better spent on patenting the new sustainable/green tech systems I have been?

Hi changing climate, you make some incredibly interesting and well made videos and I would like to ask do you think consumer activism works? or would you suppose it is a bandaid solution to a wider systemic problem. In my honest view, despite buying more environmentally ethical products I still feel as if i do it in part because it "feels good" however when i look at some of the facts i find there is little my money can do.
Its a bandaid imo
For every action i do, 100x more is weighed in opp direction
Hence i support citizen assemblies to debate n find our current best practical answers n solutions with least impact on poor n vulnerable. We must mitigate eco apartheid nationally and internationally
A gov policy such as the uk's 5p for plastic bags made a big impact compared to my individual choice of carrying a rucksack when shopping
"voting with your wallet" is bullshit. It's an illusion to make the worker think they have more power they do. In reality the "sustainable" brand is still owned by Nestle so nothing changes. That's why you need to organize and use the channels that are available to you such as local government, activist organizations etc. The individual has a lot of power but it comes from their actions not their purchases.
Even though it is sad to see that that was only 0.1 % of the population of the world at the time, it still meant something significant...
I think what this video is missing is what it is that we as individuals should actually do. Economics got us into this problem and economics can be what get us out. Each of us makes a vote every day with their dollar. Each plastic water bottle purchased is slowly poisoning our future, every kilowatt of power from coal costs us. We have to reduce our gas usage, our meat consumption, and challenge companies to use less plastic and more bio-decomposable material. I believe in innovative solutions that have to replace this, hence why companies like Tesla and beyond meat alternatives are making waves. If we all buy it the price will go down. If you want to really make change we need better marketing and ban government lobbying. Crooked politicians are the ones approving it and someone had to elect them. Education and mainstream normalization of the change necessary have started and I believe in a brighter future.

Steven Homan I think the problem is the current age of most politicians 🙈 it’s time for a new generation to step up
Gouvernements are and will be part of the problem
You don't need to wait for the government to take action, you can force their hand by lightly threatening them with revolution. That's how all meaningful change was achieved, the civil right's movement was successful because the CIA realized that either they give into the demands of people like MLK or they'd have the Black Panthers leading a revolution. And if that revolution happened the US army would be outnumbered.

This was a wonderful video with some great ideas. My only concern is that most protesters are in fact preaching to the choir everyone knows it's 1% of the population that gets to make all of the decisions and since a better world is not profitable WE the people need to become self reliant and stop hoping stop hoping that the government will do the right thing simply because were asking.
I feel like I'm looking through a lens and can see a possible future, in a world where the good guys win, but as it sits the future is uncertain. The bad guys are winning right now, and it is going to be so hard to get to this future... I hope I see the beginning

Like most complex problems, they requiere a nuanced solution. But most of the "movements" by youths are just headless displays of naivete at best with some misguided sence of guilt . The worse is that they use them for propaganda while some other organization pulls the strings to creat chaos, martyrs, theatre.
If they want to educate people they could create videos like this and teach people what to do about the problem. Theres little need of over using marches. And most of all. They need to educate themselves. Thanks for your awesome videos!!

As someone who lives in a developing country, I can't really organize protests since most people really don't see climate change as a problem. Even if someone sees it a problem, they are seen as just crazy. As a muslim (closeted atheists really but this is what almost everyone here identifies me with) living in India, everytime I try to talk about the environment and how hindu and muslim festivals are effecting the environment, it may be the fireworks in Diwali or the amount of plastic thrown in barah wahfaat, I am either a hinduphobe in the former or crazy in the latter, because I am ruining the "fun". It's not as simple as educating them, because to educate someone you need to get them to actually listen. There's also the problem of getting the people to act up when they are barely supporting their families or do not get time to act up. Like, how can you even make them act up when they don't even have time to do so? I don't even know someone who is down to acting up here. Even if I act up, not more than a dozen people are really going to join even passively.
Honest question here for the very well informed viewers of this channel. Could it be that disruptive protest might both polarize and alienate people, being, sadly, counterproductive?
Look at the history of literally any social movement. You'll find that everyone got extremely upset over how "polarizing" their protests were at the time and in every case those movements were successful. No one ever talks about how polarizing MLK was anymore but when he was alive people sure did have a lot of complaints about him and many thought that he should have protested in a "less disruptive" way. People only get upset about protests in the moment, none of that anger ever lasts because ultimately it's not serious, it's just an excuse people come up with to justify their opposition to a movement. But over time the thing that does last is the gains those movements made through protest. The LGBTQ rights movement started with Stonewall and today it has made gay marriage legal in the majority of the west and enacted anti-discrimation laws. It's a clear example that "polarizing" is just bullshit and protests do work.

I wouldnt mind a vidio on what's going on in the uk update on this.
hey I'm from Seattle and how could we have more environmentalist focused candidates even on a local scale to lead the way to a carbon neutral, plastic free, etc city
@@dan26dlp as much as it is important to push on that national scale for the bigger scale, it also starts with those small places proving it works which is why right now I like emphasize local elections where it's more viable *right now* for legislation to get approved. As for prices in Seattle yeahhh idk what to do ab that bc economy and money is important but how to do that as sustainable as possible, Seattle just needs to annex the greater Seattle area lmao
Great video, as usual. A future topic in extension of this might be the following: How does the increasingly draconian response of authorities to protest affect democracy as we know it? In UK XR organizers were arrested on suspicion of "conspiracy to cause public nuisance", and a building where they were storing props was raided (source: www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/05/london-police-arrest-extinction-rebellion-activists-in-advance-of-environment-protest). In Belgium an XR sit-in in a public square was met with water cannons and pepper spray. More and more people want to call XR and other climate protesters Terrorists. It doesn't bode well for a democratic society if non-violent protest is met with increasingly violent counter-measures.
It's the crackling facade of capitalist democracy. When it is met with an actual strong movement to try to change things it starts to show it's dictatorial face. Climate activists need to become better at protecting themselves and their comrades, it also means that we might have to ready ourselves for violent clashes.
As an adult growing up in the Eastern Block of post communist Europe I always had the experience that protests sadly do not matter. Governments have all the power to either completely silence you or to promise everything and then go back on all their promises immediately after they get elected. They can simple avoid all accountability because they are in charge and there is little one can do about it.I am glad that there are still people in this world that keep trying because I have lost my faith in this many years ago.
Children are literally under Attack by the GOP, right now.
GOP wants to make Children
into mindless Drones as "Some More News" points out in his Third GOP-Video.
The world won’t die we will
No surprise to hear no mention of animal agriculture being the biggest single cause of climate crisis. Only when we begin to acknowledge that can we truly begin to address of the climate and social issues in the world
With the recycling restrictions that China put on the USA a few years back, it severely damaged our waste management industry. It showed a lot of the glaring inadequacies in our system and forced businesses to either close or innovate. Those who innovated, while they lost jobs in some areas, they gained those same amount of jobs or more in others. More inspectors and more intelligent systems to help sort, new machines and operators for those machines, new marketers and representatives for partnerships with other companies and manufacturers to buy the sorted wasted. It's through these major pain points that forces change.
Our Changing Climate, join Team Trees!
I'm that guy recycling every piece of cardboard and plastic i can get my hands on even though I know it won't really help until we educate the world that we all should be recycling.
P.S. The guys that pick up my recycling hate me because I always have a full bin and boxes cut up and placed inside another box next to it every week.
Empathy over ego
Well done for highlighting the work of indigenous activists of color !
You see, this is why we are planting so many trees.
Can you do a video on careers that help climate change??
What about the reactions of the common people? In my opinion these climate strikes have somewhat backfired in Belgium. I used to go with them and I used to be really active in the protests, but ever since the last elections I've doubted the protests' effects.
If I talk to people, the reactions I usually get is that they're tired of climate strikes & protests. That they already know about the problem. That it's been enough.
It's almost always a negative reaction. And because of that, they start to look negatively at people trying to save the climate. They start to laugh at climate change.
Convincing the government is important, but we must not forget that it's the people who vote. If we make the people look negatively at this, it'll all be for naught.
Funnily enough, common people are a lot smarter than they’re given credit for. Common people have been quietly paying attention for years. Each time the IPCC releases another set of predictions the common people see that not one of their previous predictions has come true. We’ve all seen Al Gore’s movie and can recognise BS when we see it. We all go the beach and see that the sea level hasn’t risen in our lifetimes. We don’t agree that there is a climate emergency. What we do agree on is we need to do something to stop plastics getting in to the oceans and it would be really good if better controls of heavy metals and other poisonous compounds could prevent them getting in to water supplies. We know we can do lots of things better. We’re also realistic and know that nobody individually or collectively knows fully how our climate works nor if what we do will have any appreciable effect on it at all.
That has been said of literally every social movement and in the end they all turned out to be effective. Protest works history shows that, people also complained about civil right's activists in the 60s but history shows us who won out in the end. Before these protests happened those people probably didn't even think about climate change at all, they're just saying they did now because the protests have convinced people that the climate does actually matter. The fact that they're talking about this is a sign that it's working, before no one even brought up the climate, now you can't avoid it.
If you wanna help this movement, but can/will not protest. Do this: rearrange your life on what clothes you buy, what foodproducts you buy, what toys you buy etc. Many people forgot that this is such an important way, to support the climate movement
Plus donations to eco campaigns n charities involved in nature restoration
Protest work better then church! It's free and you get to express your frustrations!
I am really disappointed in Australia’s government. I have been in climate protests around the country and Scott Morrison have done nothing. If anything he has taken a backwards step with adani,
The betterment of the environment will be determined by the amount of 18-30 year old voters in 2020 who are actually gonna vote. If the % stays unchanged then nothing for the future will significantly change. If you can't convince those who are actually gonna live in the muck we are brewing then what is the point.

How can people believe that one is "free", if some politicians just forbid you to use your democratic power to protest?
no images from the Charlottesville protest;)
Cold Fusion of LENR will save us all. Make it work you inventors and scientists.
OH MY GOSH YOU DID NOT JUST QUOTE HOWARD ZINN HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA
Read Howard Zinn's primary sources and you'll be like ???!?? what is he saying where is his logical conclusion this is all philosophy and the information we have today overrides everything being said. We reviewed 3 of his articles in AP English and made presentations on how horrible they are :)
You pronounced Greta's name very well!
How do I add translation. Help.
we we’re 1.4 Million of 80 Million in Germany on the last date, when we invited all adults to join us.
And as someone who’s deeply involved in the German movement I’m telling you: we’re going to get just bigger and louder. Our movement is strong and has professionalized itself over the last year.
Something most people outside of the EU don’t even know is that we already influenced many (!) elections by a big margin.
Green parties have risen from 5-8 % to 18-23 %, depending on the country.
Although these parties mostly aren’t radical enough we managed to change big parts of public opinion in many european countries.
Let’s keep on going, this ain’t enough yet.

I don’t wanna give up my lifestyle, but i’d rather have a planet to live on. Who knows, maybe supply chain issues this year could spark real change in the way we americans treat christmas
Children are literally under Attack by the GOP, right now as "Some More News" points out in his Third GOP-Video.
