Clear, to the point, nicely delivered ... but best of all it's not a "dazzling display of mousing virtuosity" - just well presented empathetic delivery. At last: someone more intent on getting the message across such that the student can follow than showing off. Thanks for these.
Hey thanks fella, well thats really the point, I teach photography here in south wales and and you have my style in one there. Im not here to show off, thats for my students to do, i just need to show them how :)
Fantastic - i've learnt more in 9 minutes than i have in the previous 3 hours.I'm making the migration from Adobe to GIMP/Therapee right now and this has helped no end. Many thanks!
Absolutely amazing tutorial Dale, I learned a ton and now I feel much more comfortable when it come to editing! You should make many more tutorials, you have a great voice for it and are a great speaker! Thank You!
Just started out with photography and your video is actually really helpful! Love that you're able to go through the basics in less than 10 minutes. Thanks!
Brilliant tutorial Dale. You really have a penchant for teaching. This has really enhanced my understanding of the power and need of editing. Thanks a ton!
This is by far the most amazing beginner tutorial I've seen for RT. I moved to RT from lightroom and initially I felt overwhelmed my RT. Your video has given me what I need to approach my editing on RT with confidence.
Excellent tutorial - love the configurable ND filter demo - I've no idea how to do that in Lightroom 5.7 so this helps the decision to switch to Raw Therapee - together with Adobe's change to an expensive subscription only model. In fact I might not need a Mac anymore if everything important can now be done on Linux! Dale, you've changed my life!
Hey that explanation of the graduated exposure filter was exactly what I needed haha!!! Video was super easy to follow and really made editing look less scary lmao! Cheers!!!
Great instructional video! I've downloaded RT and am happy that it works for both my Fuji and Sony raw files. I love the way that the graduated filter works. The deeper I delve into RT I'm thinking that it's all I need.
Very helpful video, saving it to watch again later. So happy you demonstrated working with the Tone Curves, I didn't understand it before as I was used to Levels in Photoshop Elements. That graduated filter trick is neat! I see you exposed that shot for the sky to retain highlights and bring up shadow detail in post, it worked wonderfully!
Wow and Thank You. Your tutorial is my best use of internet time in a long time. Many other "tutorials" left me thinking.... 'I'll never get those minutes back.' You are awesome.
i downloaded this software for the first time ever and was having a horrible time trying to understand what was going on but this video helped me soooo much!!! i feel like i can finally navigate it and I am soo thankful for you
It seems to me that RawTherapee is not really a beginners’ software (although videos such as this one do help of course) - I suspect lots of conceptual knowledge is presumed. Would you say that’s true. If yes, could you recommend something a tad more approachable. Ideally free / open source but if not then, affordable, perhaps?
Thanks Dale for a great tutorial. Have only just discovered this software as I am using Linux on my computer. I have a sister called Dale, believe it or not!
Can I do this but like draw a box around something I want to reduce the exposure on? I have some windows that are washed out and would like to see through them thanks for the great video
Really like your teaching style. Just wondering what the minimum computer configuration you would recommend to use Raw Therapee. I'm currently shopping for a new laptop. Thanks for your help
Thank you so much for this video. I am new to shooting in RAW and found this video as I was searching for alternatives to Lightroom. To be honest, being an old guy, I was really worried that I would not be able to grasp how to "process" images, since all my experience years ago was in the wet darkroom. Your presentation was simple, easy to understand, and non-threatening. I now think that I can get started with this and maybe improve some of my images. Well done, Sir.
Heaven sent....another well known, cloud-based photo editing environment has literally died on me and I have more engineers than you can count debugging the issue on my SurfaceBook (my on-the-job editor). I'm dead in the water with two-days of photos to process. This tool looks amazing. Your tutorial is great. Question....can we do any watermarking via the tool? Small deal but many of my clients ask for their team logos included on photos. If not...any suggestions for how to do this?
Excellent thank you. This has convinced me to get into 'shooting RAW', especially shots featuring some sky. I'm currently using 2 or 3 different editors for my jpegs, switching between them by copy & pasting the image. I have a question: Can I paste a RAW image into RT, tweak, convert then copy & paste it into another editor for any further work like cloning?
Yes, you can export a jpeg from RT and import it into Gimp and do the cloning and other things there. If you use the development version 2.9 of Gimp you could also export 16bit tiffs and import them into Gimp.
Every time I edit the exposure/color of a photo in RawTherapee and then close it, the next image in my file browser automatically has the same edits applied. How do I turn that off??? I can't find an answer anywhere!
Thanks Dale. Can you give me some advice? When I sharpen an image i am only seeing the effect of it when i am in 100% zoom. Is it possible to see the effects when xoomed out looking at the whole picture rather than just a small feature? Cheers
+Marius Schudel Hi there Marius, I'm afraid I don't think its possible to see the effect of sharpening when zoomed fully out, this is the same in many photo editing packages including Adobe's lightroom. Perhaps you could try exporting the image as jpeg and viewing it full screen to see if you are happy or not with the effect.
Dale, is this the only editing software you use and can you recommend a good payed for software.Do you use AVS video editor at all. By the way great tutorial too mate.
I also use Gimp, Photoshop, Lightroom, and just starting to take a look at Affinity Pro. I can always recomend Photoshop as I have used it for years, however if your loking for something without a subscription Affinity has impressed me so far. I use Davinci Resolve for most of my editing. Thank you!
Clear, to the point, nicely delivered ... but best of all it's not a "dazzling display of mousing virtuosity" - just well presented empathetic delivery.

"dazzling display of mousing virtuosity" is so frustrating and Dale does NOT do that.
I find these instructions to be a huge time saver and well worth the investment to get the utilization it offers.
Fantastic - i've learnt more in 9 minutes than i have in the previous 3 hours.I'm making the migration from Adobe to GIMP/Therapee right now and this has helped no end. Many thanks!

Dale many thanks for sharing the techniques for editing in a plain & simple language.
hands down one of the best tutorials I've seen!
Brilliant tutorial Dale. You really have a penchant for teaching. This has really enhanced my understanding of the power and need of editing. Thanks a ton!

5 years later and this tutorial still works wonders!!!
Dude. You rock. Thanks for the straight forward, easy to understand instruction.
Thank you for making this so simple to understand. You have probably saved me hours of fiddling about and getting nowhere.

Thanks Dale! Brilliant job of explaining it all in simple terms.
I was looking for Before and After. Now I found it on your video(snapshot)😃
ThankYou🙏
Hey that explanation of the graduated exposure filter was exactly what I needed haha!!! Video was super easy to follow and really made editing look less scary lmao! Cheers!!!
Finally someone told me how to see my original picture and compare in real time with that snapshot feature.
Thank you for creating this tutorial Dale, it was most helpful!
Great instructional video! I've downloaded RT and am happy that it works for both my Fuji and Sony raw files. I love the way that the graduated filter works. The deeper I delve into RT I'm thinking that it's all I need.
After watching that I think (as I've installed it) I'll be brave enough to dive in and have some fun! Thanks for a great introduction.

Hi Sir,
My image gets loaded in green. How do I rectify this ? Any help would be really appreciated...!!!

If not, Irfanview is tiny & can def do watermark of your choosing.

Great job thanks. I'm looking for a good RAW editor to avoid Adobe.
