Another song that gives me a similar hypnotic vibe is "Sweet Jane" by Cowboy Junkies, which came out several years before this song and is worthy of reaction at some point.
Yes! Been waiting for this one. Back in High School I would fall asleep to this tune at night. I hear it now and I get so sad. Makes me wish I was young again so I could experience those days one more time. 30 years goes by in the blink of an eye.
My 8 year old daughter dedicated the song to me at her vocal recital last year as a surprise because she knew how much I loved it. Had me sooo choked up. She killed it too 😉.
Part of the appeal of this song, and it is a perfect late night driving song, is - it must be said - how exquisitely beautiful Hope Sandoval was/is. Everyone was in love with her.
@@AC-gw4qu She was desperately shy and suffered from the worst stage fright I have seen in over 50 years of gig going . In fact around 20 minutes into a concert I saw of Mazzy Star in Birmingham , England around 1995 Hope left the stage after "fade into you" . I was near the front at the time and only a few feet away from Hope. I heard her say "you are so demanding " as she left the stage. I saw MS again around one year later and she remained on stage that second time (lol)
Her "lazy" vocal slides are enticing and hypnotic. She makes it sound easy, but she's pretty precise about her slides. Not many people sing like that any more. You hear it more in Americana than in pop or rock. The Beatles did a lot of vocal sliding as well.
@@rollomaughfling380 Thanks for that. I am actually a huge Lush fan and have just about everything they have ever released. I have even just read Miki's autobiography entitled Fingers Crossed. Desire Lines is my favourite track. I remember Harriet when she first appeared with the Sundays on Channel 4 on The Word and The Tube. "Here's Where The Story Ends" is my favourite of their tracks. I must admit I had a huge crush on her as well. Ladytron and Echobelly are worth as listen as is Seasurfer, especially "Dragon Song" and "Stay"
Not a perfect comparison but Hope was kind of to 90s indie rock what Debbie Harry was to new wave. A beautiful icon of her era but so down to earth and such a unique, unforgettable talent.
Love the early 90's songs like this. Another great song that started this era was 1990's "Here's Where the Story Ends" by the Sundays! Also, whenever you're hitting the content from 1982-1993, you may want to include the video, as MTV was how many of us consumed music at this time. Hope's vulnerability & shyness was part of the engagement & attraction of this song. Love your content. Cheers!
Hope Sandoval's voice is special, but shoutout to David Roback, who founded the band and was also a critical member of 80s bands Rain Parade and Opal, which was Mazzy Star's original name. A great musician who died way too young. RIP.
David Roback❤❤❤ Rain Parade, Opal! I had a Rain Parade album, and I was a freshman in college and read a tiny blurb in a music magazine that David Roback's new band Mazzy Star had a CD out called 'She Hangs Brightly'. There was a tiny pic of him and Hope and I took one look and ran down to the one record store off campus and asked if they had it. The guy looked at me oddly and said, "Yeah, we got one copy" and grabbed it and I played that all day, for days. 5 years later, they got known after Fade Into You was all over the radio. We were trying to sneak into the Mazzy Star/The Jesus and Mary Chain show and were waiting by the backdoor until we heard them go on, but after quite a while we heard applause and realized Mazzy Star had done their whole set and we hadn't heard anything because they were so quiet. Even though I still have the first Jesus and Mary Chain LP , I really only wanted to see Hope❤
This song gives me melancholy vibes, there's sadness mixed with happiness and contentment and belonging. Or simply missing those feelings after you've awakened from a dream. It's just so good.
I'm in my mid-60s, and this song's vibes immediately reminded me of Bob Dylan's *Knockin' On Heaven's Door.* Maybe, as sung by Stevie Nicks. Anyone else feel that connection?
Mazzy Star is a total vibe. I listened the hell out of the album before this, “She Hangs Brightly”, one of the best albums of 1990. Perfect for late nights with the lights down low
Total S-tier for me. You can vibe to it for hours. You can drive to it. Like you all said, you can fall in love to it and yet you can cry to it...for various reasons. Hope Sandoval is ethereal, such an amazing voice, and many of us absolutely adored her. Last year, I had to be somewhere early in the morning. I grabbed a coffee and donut. I parked. This song came on as the sun rose. It was definitely a moment.
I hadn't heard this one before. Same four chords for the whole song, no surprises, no key changes. Great vocals but the whole time "Knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door" was rolling through my head.
Lovely, ethereal, and very shy Hope Sandoval. There is no other voice like hers. Pure dream. You'd like "Halah" from Mazzy Star as well. And to hear her voice just as gorgeous in a totally different setting, she did vocals for The Chemical Brothers on "Asleep From Day" and it is magical.
This song is one of those that, once you hear it, you feel like you’ve known it forever. This song came out when I was 10 and has had me in a chokehold for 3 decades.
Amazing reaction, guys! Shout out to Nikki for sending you a DM about this one! I hope y’all will consider hitting more of the non-winning poll songs because there are so many uncut gems like this one waiting for you. This is such a beautiful and timeless song. It’s so easy to lose yourself in the atmospheric soundscape and Hope Sandoval’s dreamy vocals. The Sundays were also creating this kind of dreamy music in the ‘90s. You’ll be mesmerized by Harriet Wheeler’s ethereal vocal delivery. You absolutely must hear their sublime cover of the Stones’ “Wild Horses!”
You guys absolutely need to hit the album Trinity Session by the Cowboy Junkies if you want a whole album's worth of a similar vibe. It's also live recorded into a single mic. Amazing.
Back in the 90s, I'm in my 20s, the party's over, home with my girlfriend, having a late night smoke, hanging close. Good good times. (saw these guys open on a triple bill with Goo Goo Dolls and Bush, and while those two bands were BIGGER, Mazzy brought the vibe hard.)
Julee Cruise has a similar vibe, if you're interested. Sandoval and Cruise have a quality in their voice and delivery that is uniquely and powerfully feminine, I think. Floating into the Night by Cruise was released in '89. Her biggest single from that was 'Falling'.
Ratings aside, I think the discussion generated is a pretty good indicator of just how special the song is. The older I get, the more I believe that any art that can make even one person feel seen, or perceive something in a different way, or experience the ineffable; that art is invaluable.
Agility. Like it stops time. Charisma. On re-fucking-peat. Sauce. You guys have provided me with a whole new vocabulary for thinking about music. Thanks! 🙏 ❤
Never heard of the song or Mazzy Star until U tube earlier this year. Best version is her singing on EMI rooftop. Hope sings like a shy, nervous girl but she's so warm, melancholy & soulful. A delight to listen to over & over. Plus, she's gorgeous. ❤
The guys were right in that Fade Into You delivers in being intimate, dark, and mysterious, but Into Dust is on a whole other level with it. The dark, quiet intimacy is so powerful, it takes you to a completely different place -- whether you want to go or not lol! I don't think I've ever been able to listen to it without tears showing up.
For a song that didn't win the poll, hearing it the very next reaction is a win!! This is a Mood! Imagine hearing this on a quiet night, alone in your bedroom, or bslow dancing in a club! Fits both perfectly. The 90's had the best variety of great women artists; now it feels like the same 7 or 8 (we all know their names, hahaha!) Back then there were even all women music festivals like Lilith Fair! I can't imagine that now, people would want too many pyrotechnics, dancers, etc.
Absolutely loads of mega talented female artists around nowadays besides the obvious ones eg Laura Pergolizzi, Polly Harvey, Agnes Obel, Sharon Van Etten, Marina Diamandis, Angel Olson, Hannah Reid (lead singer London Grammar), Ellie Rowsell (lead singer Wolf Alice), , Alice Boman, Astrid Williamson, Ethel Cain , Lana Del Rey (more mainstream ) etc.
Gentlemen this was outstanding, her voice and the instruments were so very complimentary. Different but very reminiscent of the laid back style of some of the greats like James Taylor or Linda Ronstadt.
If you have a chance, check out Anthony Joseph and the Spasm Band for a cover of Dead Flowers reimagined as a kind of 70s soul song. Dirty, nasty, mean, and swinging.
I appreciate the artistry of this song; and I was in high school in the 90s and loved all the alternative acts. But this song has always bored me to tears and still can’t tell what’s so special about it.
Yay! Ahhh, The Paisley Underground. Sub-genre of sub-genre. Opal, The 3'o clock, Dream Syndicate, Green on Red, Rain Parade, Bangles...and more. All worth exploring.
My favorite cover of Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door". 🙃 But seriously, exploring all the pre-Mazzy Star bands of guitarist/co-member David Roback is a fun little rabbit hole to go down: Rain Parade, Paisley Underground one-off "supergroup" Rainy Day, Opal, etc. It's like the guy had the Midas Touch of turning every recording he worked on into this spacey, sleepy, Stonesy, half-awake junkie dreamland.
Honestly think this song goes up 50% in most live versions with the peak being the Shoreline Amphitheatre version, it's ethereal art. Hope's aura is undeniable.
I voted not for this song but for "Flagpole Sitta" (which I think you should hit at some point) on the recent poll. But I did vote for it on the previous poll that it was on. It's a beautiful song and deserved a reaction. Thanks, guys.
You must hit ‘Blue Light’ from this same album. Gorgeous chords on organ, Hope’s voice singing from inside your own head and then David takes you to heaven with his guitar. Just fucking gorgeous.
Not being seen by someone you love passionately can make you feel invisible, as if you’ve faded into them. But her person has made themselves invisible, too, covering true self with smiles, til he can’t see himself, and can’t see her, either. What a fabulous, mysterious thing to write about. The music sounds like the sad seductive spell she is under.
Hope Sandoval was a huge early 90s crush of mine -- because she was as gorgeous as her voice. She's always taken pretty good care of herself, so she's probably still gorgeous.
I didn't really know the song or the band but I absolutely love this one. It has such an ethereal sound and her voice is so subdued but emotional at the same time. Definitely hard to pull off. They remind me of another similar type band callled Innocence Mission who put out a great album called "Glow" in 95. They were a husband and wife band. Great choice, guys.

They were extraordinary: they wrote everything, … they were just colossal and wonderful, and nobody's ever mentioned them. They're as important as anybody else who's ever been, ever; it just wasn't their time." He said this to Rolling Stone magazine in 1999. Honestly think this song goes up 50% in most live versions with the peak being the Shoreline Amphitheatre version, it's ethereal art. Hope's aura is undeniable.
Halah by Mazzy Star would be good to react to next-such a great song.
I suggested that one too! It’s my favourite. No one ever seems to know about it, or react to it! I think it’s beautiful! ❤
Huh, well there's my shoes. Let's have a good look at them. Damn Hope Sandoval got me shoe gazing again.
My partner plays this song a lot. It’s great. I love songs that take their time to unfold.
If this song had a "relative" it would be Bob Dylan's "Knockin on Heaven's Door" . Soft n beautiful sound...
Speaking of a post breakup song to play on repeat, check out "Roads" by Portishead.
Watching the ethereally waiflike Hope Sandoval dreamily sing this song live was absolutely mesmerizing...
Alex and Andy are barely over 20 years old. They weren’t born when these songs were popular.
I voted not for this song but for "Flagpole Sitta" (which I think you should hit at some point) on the recent poll. But I did vote for it on the previous poll that it was on. It's a beautiful song and deserved a reaction. Thanks, guys.
Should be in the Shoegazer Hall of Fame! Classic!
You must hit ‘Blue Light’ from this same album. Gorgeous chords on organ, Hope’s voice singing from inside your own head and then David takes you to heaven with his guitar. Just fucking gorgeous.
One of the best of the one hit wonders. . . . ✌👍🖖🙏
I'm 72 and have loved this song and the singer for many years..
Knocking on heavens door
I didn't really know the song or the band but I absolutely love this one. It has such an ethereal sound and her voice is so subdued but emotional at the same time. Definitely hard to pull off. They remind me of another similar type band callled Innocence Mission who put out a great album called "Glow" in 95. They were a husband and wife band. Great choice, guys.
Her voice just sends you into a dream state.
In my 30's back then, I knew a lot of different music, but Never heard this before. Or the Artist. Always good to hear about new music from the past.
she was so young and so shy... and so very beautiful
A&A, You’ll love the 1st all-female rock band to release Albums(4) on a major label(‘70-‘73) And TOUR extensively. Fanny’s “Place in the Country”(1971)LIVE ruclips.net/video/QkVYnVAEMIU/видео.html . Their name was chosen to denote a female spirit, not a sexual connotation. David Bowie said "They were one of the finest fucking rock bands of their time, in about 1973. They were extraordinary: they wrote everything, … they were just colossal and wonderful, and nobody's ever mentioned them. They're as important as anybody else who's ever been, ever; it just wasn't their time." He said this to Rolling Stone magazine in 1999. Classic lineup June Millington - lead vocals/lead guitar; Jean Millington - lead vocals, bass; Nickey Barclay - lead vocals, keys; Alice de Buhr-drums, vocals. You’ll also love Fanny’s “Young And Dumb”, “Charity Ball”, “Special Care” and “Hey Bulldog”. The Beatles let them record “Hey Bulldog” in their studio and add a verse!!
Old musician and lifetime music fan here...Fanny is the real meal deal. I put them up there with the James Gang as stellar bands people forgot about...
