Oh my god you are so clear! Your 17 min video is more useful than the last month of lectures for data analytics at the university... Keep up the good work! :)
I wish i had a teacher for statistics like this guy. (i had a stupid one hated stats) but had to work with them and learned them myself.. you rock! excellent presentation
Sometimes I just get frustrated on our education system for just running behind marks and not making the students understand any of the stuff .Hope one day my country will also have great teachers like you who makes the student know clearly what they are learning. Thanks a lot sir, huge love and respect from India.
I can't express how much I love the way you teach. it's so interesting and easy to understand. thank you so much for your initiative. I am a student of mass communication, and for my PhD program I need to learn statistics, and it seemed so pathetic to me. your lessons made me feel like statistics is as interesting as journalism itself. thanks you is a small world. but I mean it.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! 5 statistics books, about ten videos, and a college course, and none explains what a variance actually is in such simple description
To "simply" do your work as it should be done, is already helping other people. And you do that beautifully, humbly and very effectively! God bless you for that! You are a truly master and professor! Thank you so very much!
I thought I was innately bad at Math until I came across educators like yourself who really care about learning as opposed to getting through a curriculum. Thank you for this.
I wish most professors are THIS elaborate! I needed classes where they explain why we use the formula, what it gets for us, and basically the significance of it all. Few of the professors I had in Stats were going straight for the formula, and they didn't really explain the whats, whys and hows. I wish he was my Stat teacher, maybe I have fallen in love with Stats from then on!
amazing description in everything, actually I am shocked by how this teacher consider himself as a simple student to not make explanations even a little bit complicated..thank you so much, teacher.
Absolutely incredible. You are a true legend, sir. Honestly, one of the best teachers out there and extremely patient in arriving at the answer with a logical and intuitive approach. Thanks so much
This channel has been so helpful to me, at the age of 36 and jumping into the local University, i feel like i need as much help as possible and your the most helpful person online. thank you so much.
Agreed, at 50 I jumped back into the University environment, and I wish all instructors had this guys skills at breaking down a problem and explaining it thoroughly. I often feel as if I am teaching myself, and have done so for the last 2 years. However, in the process I have learned even more.
Sir, this was a very clear and pure way to understand variance. I am very grateful to realize this. I am studying econometrics and i could never really fundamentally wrap my head around what the variance truly meant. It's easy to calculate, but for me to intuitively understand what the variance is at its core and the importance of this for statistics... is because of you. thank you
I'm a psychology student and you are my hero! cause our teacher doesn't explain to us what the words like variance and SD we use are he says the spss will do all calculations. Well, I want to understand the logic behind at least.
I've had different statistics courses throughout my degree that I've kind of just been winging. For the first time, I actually understand this concept! You're an amazing teacher.
This teacher is a genius. He explained it so clearly that even in sleep I can explain what variance is. He directly persist his teachings in first brain.
Please accept my gratitude 🙏 I've been browsing the internet for 20mins. just to understand what variance is. Now i finally get it because of you 🤧 Thank you so much Teacher 😇
Almost all other stats videos never really explained the concepts but this guy teaches us in a way that it really gets sinked in deep in our minds. dam well done Sir.
I really find this video very helpful because professor try to explain the concept from perspective of a know-nothing student instead of giving hard terms. Respect a lot!
i heard you say u wanted to show the logical reasoning for the variance formula and my heart melted...... i do decision science now and i asked my tutor what is the logic behind some formula. guy started to explain, me knowing that this isnt what i asked stopped him, he then restarted to say the same thing after he finished his useless explanation he realized what i was asking then looked at me and said it was just the rule. so sir i thank you for being "as the kids say" a real one
Million thanks from who study German language but take statistics lecture too. I speak Korean and your explanation is so clear that even I can understand very well. Thanks again for the lessons.
Very well explained...just have 2 questions 1) If problem was only with the negative elements then we could have taken the absolute value. Why did we do square only? 2) I would like to know the reason behind "n-1"?
You bring it out clearly that teaching is a talent , you have got to be my best teacher for statistics from today and onwards, thank you so very much 14:08
Amazing clarity. I learned this math in the early 1980s, studying for my Land Surveyor's license. I was sitting here trying to remember the math, and it occurred to me to look on RUclips. Now I remember the unknown variables left for me in the field, by incompetent forbears, data points that were suspect just by virtue of who established them. I ended up co writing the license exam for a couple of years. I still have Hewlett-Packard RPN nightmares. So many people know how, but they don't know why. Thanks for being a great teacher. Maybe now I can penetrate my "great cloud of unknowing".
This guy is very good teacher, he explains things in such detail it just sinks in..... Kudos, by-the-way i am a Financial Analyst and Investment Management student at the University of Toronto. Mr Math and Science guy thank you for your online material you doing a great job educating people of the planet .....
This is an excellent video!!! None of the texts I have read have explained variance so well. One book did, in simple terms, explain that the reason that the "n - 1" is used as a denominator in the sample equation is that "the sample mean always underestimates the true variance in the population." There is actually a mathematically and statistically advanced reason for subtracting a simple one from the denominator, But "in the simplest terms remember that doing so helps raise the value of the outcome of the equation closer to the true variance of the population." (e.g. 20/5 = 4 however, 2/(5-1) =5)
Oh my god. This video has helped so much. I dislike my current Stats prof... he explains nothing as well as this guy. Thank you!! I wasted hours in stats class only to learn it here in a fraction of the time!!
Wow, u just explained wht all these parameters mean and wat we r dng with them step by step. Other videos just tell u theoretically, but you are brilliant just brilliant. Thank you.
so much easier than what my professor taught us. i was completely clueless of how to figure out the difference between variance and the mean. thank you
Note that in the original function we multiply by p. The p is gone here. Since we sum up the "resulting" random variables and devide them by N, which is actually probability and it gives us p. So for two Xs X0=0 and X1=1 in bernuli or binomial disterbution we'd get p=0.5 since we have same amount of times each variable appearing in the same amount of results. Many thanks to you for the explanations!
Dear Jason, thank you so much for this fantastic series on Statistics. I will purchase every single volume you put out on statistics. Everyone out there should recognize that Statistics and Data is the new oil of the 21st Century!
God bless you sir, you are an magnificent teacher. You do not really make us learn rather you make us understand the concepts from the ground level. Please accept my utmost regards.

instead of just memorizing the formula it's so much better to understand the meaning and make of the formula. this video is very helpful! thank you very much!
I thumbed up for this video because unlike in school, this guy has actually taught the reasoning behind variance. In school, we were literally just told to memorize the formula. Kudos

Why do we not use |Xi - x̄ | instead of (Xi - x̄ )² ?
Because, you'll get a zero after you sum up all of those numbers since the mean is equally further from the two ends of your data...
And also because the absolute bars will only have an effect on the data after you have summed it all up...
