All of this effort to keep people from learning the truth; that would ultimately bring about understanding and peace. Using their own kids and school libraries as a shield for the shame of their ancestors, while the ancestry of others are burned and buried is evidence of their hatred and hypocrisy. It’s not happening!
Not teaching it, as a part of history, is even worse. I had to teach my kids about the Holocaust because their school conveniently skipped over that part.
My school has a banned books week, celebrating student freedom to read. Books that are banned in other schools are marked with red dots and moved to the front of the library so they can be more easily spotted. When it is not Banned Books Week, the red dot books remain on the shelves.
I like that this feels like constructive student activity because they're reading books banned in other schools, which means they're paying attention to other schools. Sounds more meaningful than just "I did what they told me not to."
I like how there's enough budget for bounties being placed on educational officials and employees...i wonder where they could of used that for better use...

Yes, some of these parents have probably grown up homes where reading wasn't a thing. If they would read some of these books, it would change them for the better.

Regarding the Russian figure skater scandal I just feel like the IOC and Court of arbitration really messed up. What really gets me is the court of arbitrations excuse for why they did it. "We didn't want to cause irreparable harm to a minor" the biggest problem with this statement is that it ended up doing exactly that. She messed up her routine a bit and came 4th and broke down and then with all that pressure and scrutiny all on top of her I don't blame her for that breakdown. Apparently she even wondered why other people around her didn't just tell her not to compete
I know this may come as a shock, but the IOC is extremely corrupt. Russia, the nation, was BANNED from the past two Olympics for systemic, nationally aided doping. Then were A-OK with Russian athletes, many who had never taken a drug test outside of Russia, forming the "Russian Olympic Committee". At this point the US is the only nuclear power with cash that will actually ban anyone.
Sadly there's this thing called the internet where everyone can still get access to these said books.. I dunno what they are gonna do once they figure that out.
@Sheila R• that's exactly what I plan to do with the two editions of Maus. They work cheap originally but then since this all happened they got banged up to almost $20 on Amazon. It's ok, mine are on back order right now. I plan on reading it AGAIN since I haven't read it in so long. Then I'm going to mail it down to Florida so my friends kids can read it. I'm pretty positive that Florida will be banning it soon as well. So at least I'll get a chance to keep it and read it for themselves before they try to brainwash these kids. The difference in school systems is unbelievable even within our state when they were up here. They're originally from upstate New York and I'm originally from Brooklyn but grew up on Long Island. The more rural schools upstate are nothing compared to what we have downstate. We've had many conversation without asked her and I was like they DIDN'T teach your kids that? So when we Zoom with each other, she sits them down with me and says listening Chrissy has to talk to you about something. I usually have like a half an hour with them on the call. So you have kind of a mini session where I talked about certain things that I think they need to know about history and also politics that happened in this country before they were born. I was raised being very politically aware as a child, but they absolutely were not. They were very brief understanding the fact that there was wars that went on, but that's about it. These schools never taught them very much. And I don't understand how they got this wall without knowing this stuff! Since my brothers were both signed up for the draft from Vietnam me and her decided that this was something we're going to bring up. They've been alive for several presidents and this whole entire time through Afghanistan I'm really have no idea why we were in that war. In school they were only taught a very minimum amount when it came to 9/11. I come from a 9/11 family, so that was also something we decided that I would talk to them about with one of the calls. There wasn't much covered at all when it came to civil rights were the 60s, a lot of that had to do with the fact that where they grew up it was like 85 to 90% White. That also amazed me to an extent but not that much because much of Upstate is a lot of white people. It's not the first time I've heard from people Upstate that their children would not told a lot about that era when it came to rights. So her and I have sat down I decided that we need to get these kids up to speed before Florida starts to drain their brain. She says that since she's moved down there she's already seen KKK signs and all these other things from the s*** kickers down there. I said I don't know man about the place that you move down to but you better be careful. You are NOT like these people and you're going to have to walk a tight line over there when it comes to you and the kids. I also found out their school in Upstate New York never taught them about stranger danger! So I got her the videos and also a video about yell fire. I could not believe this school district was so deficient in telling these children how to protect themselves. This is part of the curriculum in every state by the way.
I'm sure that all these people who are so worried about banning books from schools are the same people who sit there and let their kids play on the internet all day long unsupervised and do not at all pay attention to things that they're doing online but yep let's worry about a book I can't remember the last time I seen a kid reading a book

You are entitled to an opinion and it is your responsibility to think critically and fact-check that opinion. And part of that equation is having debates where you are willing to learn and have your mind changed. Democracy isn't easy, but it's America's heart and soul, even if it has never yet reached its vision.
Sure they can take exception to a single thought or line, that’s fair enough, but question them on the context. Make them express the ‘why’ of their objections and question them on the ‘why’ of their beliefs.

You are entitled to an opinion and it is your responsibility to think critically and fact-check that opinion. And part of that equation is having debates where you are willing to learn and have your mind changed. Democracy isn't easy, but it's America's heart and soul, even if it has never yet reached its vision.

I thought they sent their kids to be educated but banning books, that's the complete opposite of education.

Sure they can take exception to a single thought or line, that’s fair enough, but question them on the context. Make them express the ‘why’ of their objections and question them on the ‘why’ of their beliefs.
