In this anniversary episode and final one in the current series, we feature Ilford's renowned Pioneer Market. The year really has flown by and we would like to thank all of you who have watched, followed, liked, shared, commented, informed and otherwise supported us over the past 12 months. It's been a pleasure reminiscing with you. We will be taking a break for a while and hope to make an announcement later in the year. In the meantime we will still be interacting on social media and occasionally revisiting some of the past year's episodes.
Pioneer Market was an indoor shopping precinct at the top end of Ilford Lane. Here we remember one of the town's most popular shopping destinations during a period of over 80 years.

Interesting watching these amazing clips and reading the comments from past inhabitants, as someone who have been living in Ilford for the past 15years.. i promise to look after ilford for you. @Retro, you knowledge has been refreshing

Thanks for all the great videos, it has been hugely enjoyable reminiscing and seeing such stark contrasts between now and then. Oh to be a kid in the 80’s again
The 80s still holds a lot of emotion for many; regular shopping trips to household names, the throes of youth, buildings that survived the war still clinging on.... But the gears of change were already set in motion and as we grew 'progress' happened under our noses - or something like that! Thank you for tuning in and supporting the channel, sharing your memories. It makes looking back richer for everyone.

It's great having you and others in the same boat to remember those times with. When I look back at these old photos I feel like they show a different 'present day', almost like the scene still exists...somewhere. Even if it is just in our memories I'm happy to help jog them back to life. I have enjoyed making them and hope to come back with more in the future. Thanks again for watching, acknowledging the research and most importantly for your support!

So much nostalgia and memories of growing up. Despite the saddest thing on January 29th 1983 when a famous shop was gone and split into 2 new shops 😢 brilliant times
They were definitely good times and it's nice that they are filled with so many good memories Raj.
I bought my first guitar in 1982 from the Pioneer Market Music Shop.

It's hard to imagine now isn't it?! Ron's Music Shop would have been the place - I'm sure it must have launched many music careers (amateur and professional) over the years.
Wonderful memories, thank you for the video. I remember, where the corrugated hoarding stood, there used to be the Green Shield Stamp showroom? I would often go there to exchange my mother's Green Shield stamp books for various gift items.
Thanks Alfa, I wish I had a photo or could remember those shops. I do remember the family collecting Green Shield stamps though - another great thing of the past now.
I used to work in the Green Shield Stamp shop as a Saturday job. That woud hav been in 1970-71. I wonder if I ever served you?
Love this video. i have so many memories of this place. Especially the famous Ron's music. Shame you do not have a picture of the area before the shops opposite were knocked down. i would love to see them again.
During its last few years I seemed to go to Pioneer Market more than the Exchange, as it had the brilliant Backtrax record shop there. I think that actually moved into the unit that Ron's Music Shop used to have. Ron's was ever popular for instruments and THE place for musical Ilfordians to pick something up. I'm not surprised you miss it. Yes, I reckon we're only a couple of months the wrong side of the demolition to have caught the old terrace on the left. I'm disappointed about that too, but at least we have one of Pioneer as-was. Thanks again for sharing your memories.
@@IlfordRetro this bright back memories I remember as a kid my mum got us costs from pioneer market the day it was sold of that was the day Ilford went down hill now we have a big tower block

I date back to the late 1950s through to early 1980 and remember vividly being dragged through the Pioneer Market every week and amused myself looking in toy shops windows also the hifi shop. Ron's music shop had a corner site just outside the market where I spent a good deal of money as I matured! I have to say that whilst I understand the need for progress, the new layout looks awful. Thanks for the views
Another child being dragged around the Market by their parents - it was like a rite of passage to becoming a proper "Ilfordian". Wonderful memories. Ron's was a top place for musical instruments wasn't it, and I'd wager that the world was much more into musical instruments back then compared to now. It's a shame that the new building, while it offers a gym and restaurant, doesn't have the same communal vibe that the market always had.
I used to buy guitar strings from Roy’s! I hope you have upcoming memories of Edward Terry’s bookshop.
...when Ilford was full of budding guitarists. I'm digging the archive to see if I've got something showing Edward Terry (or "dward Terry" in its final days)
@@IlfordRetro I’m watching your videos again. The last owner of ‘dward Terry, was a chap, called Brian Berry! So a nice rhyme till the end. That would have been early to mid 90s. The owner before was an older gent, no relation or rhyme, but a miserable sod. I can see Pioneer Point from my kitchen window.
@@thebohemian. Brilliant! Brian Berry of Edward Terry has a perfect ring to it. I do remember a friendly sort of manager which must have been him, but my memory is fading. I'm pleased I don't remember the miserable sod before him though. On the note of former shop owners, do you recall the model toys and kits shop that was once in Pioneer Market but in the early 90s moved to Cranbrook Road, opposite Ursuline School? I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called. Oh and thanks for re-visiting the episodes :)
@@IlfordRetro the only shop that came to mind was one called Skinners. It was opposite the record shop BackTrax. It was more I remember as a newsagents, but I do remember the old shop signage said toys.
@@thebohemian. Skinners, ah yes I remember that one too. They did sell some toys you are right. The one I'm trying to remember was at the back, on the long walkway sort of at the end where the fishmonger appeared in later days. Perhaps someone will know it and comment with the answer one day!🙏

While on the subject of covered markets... just a few miles down the road does anyone remember Broadway Market at Barking Broadway, behind Marjs & Spencers?. I seem to remember it was around till about 1965 then demolished. Blakes Matket, smaller but not unlike the Pioneer Market in Ilford soldiered on for amother decade or so.
Good question Alan, I don't have any information on the markets in Barking. Hopefully someone will shed some light on what was there. By comparison Pioneer Market seemed to endure well beyond what came and went in Barking, so we should be thankful.

not really unfortunately, other than it was a casualty of WWII bombing beside it.
