- Documentary on how traders of an East London market have been forced to move on after developers claim their land... Original 30 minute programme broadcast in UK, 2008, Community Channel.
I have fond memories of the Pioneer Market. The wool shop that was shown was owned by Reg and Dora Bishop who are my grandparents
Thank you for commenting Andrew. They ran a very nice shop which served people far and wide. Was Paul, who features in the documentary your relative and is he still around?
Yes my uncle Paul is still alive
@@AndrewBISHOP-ii7hs really pleased to hear that
Nice piece. Brought back some good memories of working there every minute I could, as a 15 year old.
Glad it triggered some nice memories, Kev. Which shop did you work in? Was Paul Bishop there at that time? He and his family seemed to have seen everyone who set up shop there at one point or another.
I worked in Edwards, the grocers. Started as a Saturday boy then worked occasionally after school and during summer holidays. Bishop's, the shop, was known by everyone that I knew because all the mothers used to knit back then. They were very nice people. The whole place was very friendly, I had a blast during the year I was there.
That's lovely to hear. It always gave me a sense of community when I visited, even though it was during the final 10 years of 'decline'. But good things never fade from memory...
Very sad to hear the market has gone. Places like that give an area its character and soul, our shopping centres now are made up of the same old shops and brands and are devoid of any real identity. Such a shame for the small local traders to be forced out too. I used to go in Pioneer market a lot in the early 80s, when I worked in Ilford. This is a really nice film, thanks for posting.
Thanks for stopping by @Sven524 and for sharing your memories. You are right that the place had character - even into its old age there was a feeling that you'd be treated well no matter which shop you went into. A level of personal service and familiarity that is much rarer on the generic British high street these days.
This place brings back great memories, shopping weekly with my mum back in the 70's. In my young teens, loads of time was spent just looking at the guitars and other stuff in the music shop there. My 1st ever electric guitar came from there.
Great to hear Martin, I didn't even know there was a music shop there at one time. I reckon if the place still existed it would have a variety of creative stores and boutiques in it - selling items at a good price too.
I worked in Skinners Sweet Shop in the 70's and knew the guys in Frank's as well as Bishop's Wool Shop and Marks. Loved it, Alf Skinner was a nice man always remember him.
Lovely to hear about your experience of working there Linda. It's a shame that a name like Skinner's which was so well known in the town, hasn't lived on. But at least the memories of him and the shop will.
Such a shame, our family business (A. Day for Salads) was here until 1976 and was run by my father since the late 40's. Many happy memories of working there on Saturdays in the 6th Avenue just opposite Franks Butchers. Nice to see little'Arry on this video. All the old traders were lovely hard working people. And the place had character especially at Christmas.
I grew up across the street from the pioneer market, just before it got demolished and made into flats.. good ol memories as a kid running around in there 😫❤️
Were you on Britannia Road/Audrey Road? It must have been such a change once that corner was cleared.
The Pioneer market...the stuff of my young dreams in the fifties.
I had fond memories as a child in there, mum used to take me for a cake and a cuppa, I can't remember the name of the cafe, but I remember all the tea towel displays of sports personality etc, and a great sweet stall where I used to get my peanut brittle and coconut mushrooms, happy times yet short lived.
Yes, that sweet stall might have been called Skinners?
Ilford Retro possibly... wish I remembered a little more, I was around 9 or 10 in 1990, out of curiosity was that an old stall like franks and bishops? I definitely remember those being there.
@@datsmyshyt9714 Yes, it was an old store and as far as I remember it was on an avenue parallel to Bishops wool shop. However, my own memory is sketchy, and likewise I wish I remembered it better.
Ilford Retro it was my favourite place for sweets, got lots for my money, and mum used to get her wool from bishops. Do you remember the name of the cafe ? There was the only one there I believe .
@@datsmyshyt9714 You're right....there was a cafe (well, the one I recall was) at the end of the second to right-most avenue heading towards the fishmonger that was in the corner. It's terrible I can't remember the cafe's name!
@robday2 Thanks for adding your anecdote Rob - interesting to know that you worked there with your dad and that Harry was familiar to you even then! Even in its final days, despite looking a bit shabby, it was a haven and pleasant respite from the glossy high street and indoor shopping mall. Like you say, it had character.
Even in the 80s it looked past it. I don’t think I ever went in there in all the yrs I lived in Ilford
Wow memory lane. How the world has changed
Quite right about that
This is only 10 years old but seems so much older. Strange.
It's actually 15 years old. I shot it in 2004 but didn't submit it for broadcast or upload it till 2008/09.
Utter Nutter! Always shopped there 💙
"It was FAN-TASTIC!"
lol i got so much Ben Sherman from Utter Nutter back in the day lol
Nice video my mum used to take is to pioneer market when we were kids
Cheers Hardeep, hope it brought back some good memories
@@KeenoteProductions it sure did thank you
I used to go to Backtracks a lot . Pioneer Market was crusty but good at the same time.
Backtrax was probably my favourite shop and it had a lot of tunes I never expected to see in there. Agreed, the market was definitely a 'crusty but good' place.
Nice little market. Now pulled down for a concrete monstrousity.
They really are dreadful - I wonder how many of the little high rise boxes are "affordable"?
I used to go in there for computer games back in the 80s, and Utter Nutter after they opened up around 90ish or soon after (was another clothes shop before then). From the looks of it, it really went downhill towards the end... My understanding is Fairheads just up the road closed down around the same time. Ilford Palais (5th Avenue I think in the end) got demolished too... and the little arcade of shops just opposite where Music Power and Jean Bin were.
Utter Nutter still continues with its Romford store and I think you are right about Fairheads and there is now a block of flats where Ilford Palais used to be.
Hello, I'm writing a university essay on the loss of Ilford's Pioneer market and the controversy behind the two towers put in it's place. I would like to cite so extracts from your documentary. How do I go about obtaining permission?
Many thanks for getting in touch and notifying, I'm pleased that you find it a useful resource. Please can you email me on keenoterecordings at gmail with details about the excerpts you'd like to use and I will reply accordingly. Kind regards
I've sent you an email. Please let me know if you received it. Thank you
👍
I miss backtrack records look at ilford in 2024 😢
Charlie had something for everyone in Backtrax, a great shop
I used to do some shopping in there, the butchers - there isn't and English butchers in the borough now, that I know of. It's just so sad.
Yes, there used to be so many butchers around town and that smell of meat and sawdust which I experienced as a child being pushed around in the buggy - I'll never forget it.
Millions have been spent trying to redevelop Ilford but once all the English middle class started to leave in the 80s it’s just gone downhill.
And who imports third world into their own country ??? Why are you allowing this
This is from 2004
You're right! But broadcast a few years later in 2008.
Shame history lost forever, this building was sold to Pakistani prime minster Nawaz Sharif for development , he used nations wealth to purchase this land through corruption which was proven in the court of law, he is now serving life in prison.
I heard a rumour about the initial ownershhip but never knew if it was true.
I heard the same
There used to be British Meat in Ilford , Pork meat ????
I am shocked
Now you cannot get pork from Butchsrs since they are sharia law .
I do wish people would stop refereeing to Ilford as "East London" I was born down the road in Newbury park, and that and Ilford was ESSEX,,, Horns Road ILFORD ESSEX!! Not The East End!! The cretins changed the boundaries, when they introduced "postcodes" ! I knew the market from 1955, up until moving well out to the countryside in 1971.
Nice one Chris. The good old Essex v East London debate - I love it!!!
Now Ilford is a proud Forth World lgbt , diversity islam prooooi city 😂
